Overview

Happo compares component screenshots and runs accessibility testing alongside visual checks on every plan. Its integrations span component tools, browser automation, repositories, and CI, making it a practical fit for teams that want to connect regression checks to existing development workflows rather than adopt a standalone manual process.

A snapshot counts one component variant in one browser, and a run usually occurs once per CI build. That accounting matters: broad component coverage, multiple browsers, or frequent builds can raise consumption quickly. Free accounts pause at the monthly quota until the next cycle or an upgrade; paid accounts can continue, but each additional snapshot costs $0.006.

Key features

Happo uses pixel diffs for visual comparison and supports cross-browser capture and an approval workflow. Accessibility testing is included across all plans, so teams do not have to move up a tier to pair accessibility checks with screenshot review.

Framework integrations include Storybook, Playwright, Cypress, and a generic API for custom setups. Repository connections include GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, and GitLab. GitLab support is experimental, including for self-managed instances, so teams depending on that connection should account for its status.

The Happo CLI auto-detects CI providers including GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Travis CI, and Azure DevOps. Listed browsers are Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and iOS Safari, but availability depends on plan. Free is Chrome-only; Starter adds Firefox, Growth adds Safari, and Pro adds iOS Safari and Edge. Enterprise includes all listed browsers.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 5,000 snapshots per month, Chrome, and visual and accessibility testing, with no credit card or time limit. It is a useful way to keep a small test suite running, but the quota pause means it cannot absorb a monthly spike without waiting or upgrading.

Starter costs 149.00 USD per month, billed Monthly, for 50,000 snapshots, Chrome and Firefox, API access, accessibility testing, unlimited users, and concurrent runs. It fits teams needing a substantial allowance and collaboration without per-seat limits, though Safari and other advanced browser coverage are absent.

Growth costs 399.00 USD per month, billed Monthly, and raises the allowance to 150,000 snapshots while adding Safari. It retains unlimited users and concurrent runs, API access, and accessibility testing. This is the more suitable tier when Safari coverage is required, but the monthly base cost is higher and extra snapshots still cost $0.006 each.

Pro costs 749.00 USD per month, billed Monthly, with annual billing available. It includes 300,000 snapshots and adds iOS Safari and Microsoft Edge to Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Unlimited users and concurrent runs, API access, and accessibility testing remain included. Choose it when those additional browsers justify the price; otherwise, lower tiers cover the listed core workflows.

Enterprise has custom pricing, with annual plans available. It starts at 1M+ snapshots and adds SSO, SLAs, enterprise support in US and EU timezones, and all listed browsers, alongside unlimited users and concurrent runs, API access, and accessibility testing. It is aimed at organizations needing the larger allowance and enterprise controls; teams that do not need those should compare the published tiers first. Paid plans charge $0.006 for each additional snapshot.

Platforms

Happo supports Android, iOS, web, and API platforms. The browser list spans Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and iOS Safari, although the plan determines which are available. This distinction is central for teams whose required browser matrix extends beyond Chrome.

Who it's for

Happo is a strong fit for product and frontend teams already using Storybook or browser automation and wanting visual and accessibility regression checks integrated with CI and repository workflows. Unlimited users on paid plans make the published tiers suitable for teams that need shared access without per-seat pricing. It is less compelling for teams whose test volume is hard to forecast, whose required browsers sit above their budget tier, or whose GitLab dependency makes experimental support a concern.

Happo says customer screenshots and related data are confidential and protected with account-level access controls, with encryption in transit and at rest and regular penetration testing. It does not store payment card data, delegating card processing to Stripe. Support is founder-led, with customers communicating directly with founders Henric Persson or Joe Lencioni. The project began in 2014 and the commercial product launched in 2017.

Pros and cons

Pros

Accessibility checks on every tier: Free users can include accessibility regression work rather than reserving it for a paid upgrade.
Useful workflow breadth: Storybook, Playwright, Cypress, a generic API, major repository integrations, and CI auto-detection support several ways of fitting checks into development.
Team access without seat caps on paid plans: Starter and higher tiers include unlimited users and concurrent runs.
Browser coverage scales by tier: Growth adds Safari and Pro adds iOS Safari and Edge for teams that need a broader matrix.

Cons

Snapshot usage can expand with coverage: Each component variant in each browser counts separately, and runs usually recur per CI build.
Free quota stops testing: Reaching 5,000 monthly snapshots pauses the account until the cycle resets or the team upgrades.
Additional paid usage is metered: Every snapshot beyond plan allowance costs $0.006.
Lower paid tiers have narrower browser options: Starter lacks Safari, while Pro is needed for iOS Safari and Microsoft Edge.
GitLab is experimental: Teams relying on GitLab, including self-managed deployments, should weigh that limitation.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Visual Regression Testing Software and Browser Testing Software.

Screenster is an alternative with a free plan and API, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms.
SmartUI is an alternative with a free plan and Android, API, iOS, and web platforms; its free plan includes 2,000 screenshots valid for the lifetime of the plan and one month of build history.
Argos is an open-source, MIT-licensed option with a free plan and API and web platforms.
Diffy is an alternative with a free plan and API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms.
Frontend Regression Validator is an Apache-2.0-licensed option that can run locally or with Docker.
Screenshotbot is a paid alternative with a free plan, a per-screenshot option, and Android, API, iOS, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms.
Applitools Ultrafast Grid is a paid alternative with a free trial and Android, API, iOS, self-hosted, and web platforms.
Sauce Labs Cross-Browser Testing is a paid alternative with a free trial and Android, API, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows platforms.

Verdict

Choose Happo if your team wants visual and accessibility regression checks in the same CI-connected workflow, and its snapshot allowance and browser tiers match your needs. The main reason to look elsewhere is cost or fit when usage exceeds quotas, required browser coverage pushes you into a higher tier, or an experimental repository integration is central to your process.
