Overview

Heartland Retail is a cloud POS and retail management system for apparel sellers and other retailers, from boutiques to multi-location franchises. It is best suited to teams that want inventory, customer records, payments and ecommerce connections under one retail platform. The $0 offer has significant commitments, while paid plans are positioned by store complexity rather than a detailed feature-by-feature tier list.

Key features

Inventory and store operations

Real-time stock updates, alerts, imports and inter-location transfers give retailers practical tools to keep availability current, particularly across more than one store. Purchase orders, vendor profiles and SKU setup extend the system beyond checkout into routine buying and stock administration. Sales reporting and employee permissions add visibility and control, although no reporting depth or permission granularity is described.

Customer and ecommerce

Purchase histories, customer preferences and a loyalty program support repeat-customer work. Integrations with BigCommerce, Shopify, Magento and WooCommerce can sync inventory, carts, promotions and customer data between store and online channels, a useful fit for retailers coordinating several sales channels. QuickBooks accounting and Management One inventory planning integrations, along with an open API, offer additional routes into an existing stack.

Payments, hardware and support

Card, debit, gift-card, Apple Pay and Google Pay acceptance covers common in-store payment choices; online, mobile and tableside payments are also supported. Heartland says its retail POS runs on iOS and Android touchscreen terminals and works with most POS hardware, including iPads. ADA compliance and multiple-language support broaden accessibility. Heartland advertises live-agent support 24/7/365 and tailored onboarding. Heartland Secure uses EMV, end-to-end encryption and tokenization for payment card data.

Pricing

Heartland uses a freemium model, with a free plan and paid pricing starting at $89 per month. Retail Essentials is described for a single location with one or two POS stations, while Retail Complete is aimed at multiple locations or more complex needs and uses custom pricing.

The $0 offer is not an unconditional free tier: eligibility and restrictions apply, it requires Heartland payment processing, a three-year contract and 4% cash discounting, and covers up to 10 POS stations. Those terms make it a poor fit for retailers seeking a low-commitment way to evaluate the product. The Essentials description gives smaller operators a clear intended use, but the published plan descriptions do not establish a detailed comparison of included capabilities.

Platforms

Heartland Retail supports Android, iOS, web and API access. Its broad device compatibility and open API make it relevant to teams with mixed terminal hardware or software integrations to maintain.

Who it's for

Consider Heartland Retail if you run an apparel or other retail business and need stock control, store operations, customer loyalty and ecommerce coordination in one system. Essentials is the stated fit for one location and one or two POS stations; Complete is intended for multi-location or more complex operations. Retailers unable to accept the free offer's processing, contract and discounting conditions, or those needing a clearly itemized plan comparison before committing, should weigh alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pro: Real-time inventory, alerts and transfers address stock visibility across locations, not just checkout.
Pro: Ecommerce integrations and an open API give retailers routes to connect store and online operations with existing tools.
Pro: Support for common mobile wallets, multiple device types, accessibility and languages covers varied store environments.
Con: The $0 offer requires payment processing, a three-year contract and 4% cash discounting, limiting its appeal as a flexible free option.
Con: The $89 monthly starting price is not paired with a detailed breakdown of plan inclusions, making it harder to judge the paid setup before contacting the provider.

Alternatives

For a paid retail platform, Aptos Retail is another option to compare. Acumatica Field Service is paid, has no free plan and uses custom pricing based on applications, expected usage, resources and deployment preferences. Cegid Retail is a paid option with no free plan and pricing available by demo request. Erply is worth comparing for teams seeking a stated monthly plan: its Growth Plan is $1,000.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for three stores, 100,000 queries monthly, unlimited users and 2,000 AI actions monthly.

Auromine is a freemium option for jewellery POS, with a free Pearl plan billed per shop per year excluding GST, limited to one counter, 30 invoices monthly and 200 items. Nimbus RMS offers a free 14-day trial with up to three stores, 50 products, one user and one register per store, and no receipt limit or credit card requirement. Ginesys One is a paid alternative with monthly pricing and an annual commitment, starting with a minimum of two ERP users. GoFrugal Retail is another paid retail option and offers a free trial.

Compare broader options in Retail Management Software and Retail POS Software. The other directories cover Virtual Terminal Software, Restaurant Payment Processing Software, Restaurant POS Software and Restaurant Management Software.

Verdict

Heartland Retail is a strong candidate for retailers that need inventory and customer operations tied to both physical stores and ecommerce, especially when multi-location stock movement matters. Its open API, broad payment support and device flexibility add stack compatibility. Choose it only after confirming which paid plan covers your needs and whether the $0 offer's contract, processing and discounting terms work for your business; otherwise, compare options with clearer plan economics or a lower-commitment trial.
