Overview

HumHub brings communication, collaboration and knowledge sharing into one platform, with use cases spanning company intranets, knowledge bases, project hubs and customer or partner communities. Its mix of built-in tools and more than 80 optional modules lets organizations tailor the workspace; that flexibility also means deciding which modules and hosting model belong in the deployment.

Organizations can run HumHub on their own infrastructure or use managed SaaS hosted on European servers. The SaaS offering uses ISO 27001-certified hosting and is GDPR-compliant, according to the maker. On-premise deployments keep data in the organization's environment, making hosting choice a meaningful privacy and control decision.

Key features

Personalized dashboards, activity streams, configurable notifications, granular permissions, full-text search, file management and social interactions provide a shared base for updates and collaboration. Granular permissions and private spaces are useful when different groups need distinct access, while search and file management support shared knowledge stores.

Optional modules include News, Messenger, Calendar, LDAP, SAML SSO, surveys and translation tools. Listed integrations include OnlyOffice, Collabora Online, LDAP, SAML SSO and a RESTful API. This range makes HumHub adaptable to different collaboration needs, though teams should select modules to match their requirements rather than assume every capability is part of the core.

HumHub also supports event hosting and moderation. It is responsive across smartphones, tablets and desktops, with Android and iOS apps as well as web access.

Pricing

The Community Edition is free under the AGPLv3 license and is self-hosted on the organization's own servers. It includes access to the Module Marketplace and free upgrades, with support through the community and GitHub. This is the natural starting point for teams able to manage their own infrastructure and use community support; it does not include the paid support arrangements offered in the commercial editions.

The Professional Edition is 144.00 EUR per month, billed monthly, for up to 100 users. The displayed indicative price assumes SaaS hosting and no onboarding. It includes premium email/helpdesk support, all updates and upgrades including security patches, prioritized bug fixing, and long-term maintenance of the latest two major releases. That package suits organizations seeking managed hosting and a defined support path; the stated price and user ceiling make it a poor basis for budgeting larger networks.

The Enterprise Edition has custom pricing. It includes a dedicated hosting cluster, a 99.5% uptime SLA, a dedicated Customer Success Manager, a custom contract, DPA and security review, and multi-site or multi-tenant deployments. It is aimed at organizations that need these service and deployment commitments. Networks with 1,000 or more users require a custom quote.

Platforms

HumHub supports web, Android, iOS, API and self-hosted deployments. Those options accommodate both mobile access and organizations integrating or operating the platform within their own environment.

Who it's for

HumHub is a strong fit for small teams, nonprofits and enterprises that want an adaptable intranet or community platform and can make a deliberate choice about hosting and support. It is less compelling for organizations seeking a fixed, turnkey setup without module decisions, or for large networks that need a firm price before discussing scale.

Pros and cons

Flexible deployment: Self-hosting preserves control over the organization's environment, while managed SaaS provides a European-hosted route.
Broad customization: More than 80 optional modules and integrations such as OnlyOffice, Collabora Online and a RESTful API support varied setups.
Useful access controls: Granular permissions and private spaces suit organizations with distinct teams or audiences.
Support varies by edition: Community users rely on community and GitHub support; premium helpdesk support and enterprise service commitments require paid editions.
Scale pricing needs discussion: The Professional price is indicative for up to 100 users, and networks of 1,000 or more require a custom quote.

Verdict

Choose HumHub if your organization wants a modular intranet or community platform and values a choice between self-managed control and European-hosted SaaS. Its combination of collaboration tools, access controls and optional integrations is the main reason to shortlist it. Look elsewhere if you need predictable pricing for a large network or do not want to weigh hosting, modules and edition-specific support before committing.
