Overview

Hydrogen is a desktop drum sequencer and drum synthesizer built around patterns, samples, and MIDI control. It is a strong fit for musicians who want a free, customizable drum machine that can run on its own or connect with a larger audio setup. Its breadth of sequencing and export options is compelling, though it is not an LV2 plugin.

Key features

Hydrogen’s sequencer allows unlimited patterns to be chained into songs, making it suitable for arranging beyond short loops. The sample-based stereo engine imports WAV, AU, AIFF, and FLAC files; downloadable drumkits can be installed through its sound library manager. This gives users room to build a kit around their own material, rather than relying only on bundled sounds.

Per-note velocity and pan controls support detailed programming, while human velocity, timing, pitch, and swing functions can add variation to patterns. Time-stretching and pitch shifting provide further sound-shaping options. MIDI support lets Hydrogen work with an external keyboard or sequencer, and MIDI or its OSC API can automate it.

For audio integration, Hydrogen supports JACK, ALSA, PortAudio, and OSS drivers; its manual describes JACK connections with other audio software. Songs can be exported to WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG, MIDI, and LilyPond, a useful spread for moving audio or notation into other workflows.

Pricing

Hydrogen is free, with no paid plan or free-trial period. That makes it an accessible option for home practice, studio work, and live performance without a purchase commitment. It is distributed under GPLv2+, which suits users looking for software under an open-source license.

Platforms

Hydrogen is a desktop application for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The project lists Windows downloads for 64-bit Windows Vista and later, and macOS downloads for OS X 10.14 and later. Linux users can install through distribution repositories or the project’s Linux download. It also provides source code and demo audio files.

The principal integration caveat is that Hydrogen has no current plans for an LV2 plugin version. Users who need that format in their host should look elsewhere; those comfortable connecting through its supported audio drivers or using MIDI and OSC have other integration paths.

Who it's for

Hydrogen suits musicians and producers who want to program sample-based drums, shape notes in detail, and arrange patterns into complete songs without paying for a sequencer. Its audio-driver support, MIDI control, and export formats also make it relevant to studio and live workflows. It is less suitable for users who require an LV2 plugin or whose setup cannot meet its operating-system requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited patterns can be chained into songs, supporting arrangements beyond loop sketches.
Pros: Sample import, downloadable drumkits, note-level editing, and humanization offer substantial control over drum parts.
Pros: MIDI, OSC automation, multiple audio drivers, and six export formats give it several routes into and out of a music workflow.
Cons: There is no planned LV2 plugin version, which rules it out for setups that depend on that format.
Cons: The listed Windows and macOS minimum versions may exclude older machines.

Verdict

Hydrogen is an excellent fit for builders who want a free, open-source desktop drum machine with deep pattern sequencing, sample editing, MIDI and OSC control, and flexible exports. Its strongest case is the range of control and integration it offers without a price tag. Look elsewhere if your workflow requires an LV2 plugin or depends on a platform older than those it supports.
