Overview

OpenNebula is a self-hosted cloud and virtualization management platform for coordinating KVM virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters across on-premises, public-cloud, and edge environments. It suits teams building enterprise clouds or AI infrastructure that need a common control plane across those settings. Its appeal is breadth—from Linux virtualization to GPU scheduling and recovery—while enterprise releases and support require a custom-priced subscription.

Key features

OpenNebula brings KVM virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters into one environment, with LXC container virtualization also supported. That combination can suit operators who want to manage VM and container infrastructure together, though the stated virtualization support is centered on KVM and LXC rather than a broad hypervisor range.

Its hybrid-cloud control plane covers on-premises, public cloud, and edge infrastructure. Teams can work through a web GUI, command-line tools, or REST, gRPC, and XML-RPC APIs; live migration is supported. Linux coverage includes RHEL, Ubuntu, Debian, and AlmaLinux, making it relevant to organizations already running those distributions.

High availability combines redundant control-plane components with hypervisor-node failover and VM replication and recovery workflows across data centers. Those capabilities make the platform more compelling for infrastructure where service continuity and disaster recovery matter, though the facts do not establish specific recovery-time or recovery-point targets.

For AI and HPC deployments, OpenNebula supports GPU scheduling with vGPU and MIG and describes integrations with NVIDIA technologies. Its broader integration set includes NVIDIA Spectrum-X, SUSE, NetApp, Veeam, and Everpure, while certified hosted-cloud providers include IONOS, OVHcloud, Scaleway, and Stackscale. These connections give teams several routes to fit it into an existing stack, but do not imply that every combination is supported in the same way.

The software is open source, but tested and certified enterprise releases are reserved for subscribers. OpenNebula Systems says its security processes align with ISO 27001:2022 and Spain’s National Security Framework requirements; that is a stated process alignment, not a claim that the product itself holds either certification.

Pricing

OpenNebula uses a freemium model. The Community Edition provides the complete core platform through public open-source releases, with no stated host limit. It is the natural starting point for teams comfortable operating open-source infrastructure without subscription support or subscriber-only enterprise releases.

Enterprise Subscription Standard and Premium both include unlimited CPUs, cores, and VMs. Standard adds 9×5 support; Premium adds 24×7 support in CET and EST. Neither subscription has a published price: enterprise access is offered by tailored proposal. The practical choice is therefore between support coverage and the budget approved for a custom quote, rather than a published usage cap.

Enterprise support includes unlimited service tickets. Standard provides 9×5 SLA-backed support, while Premium provides 24×7 support with CET and EST coverage. The Community Edition avoids subscription cost but does not include the stated enterprise support or subscriber-only tested and certified releases.

Platforms

OpenNebula is available across API, Linux, self-hosted, and web environments, with a hybrid deployment model. It supports KVM and LXC, and management through GUI, CLI, REST, gRPC, and XML-RPC APIs. This is a fit for teams that want to retain infrastructure control and integrate automation through APIs, rather than adopt a purely hosted service.

Who it's for

OpenNebula is best suited to organizations building enterprise clouds, hybrid-cloud operations, or edge infrastructure that need to bring virtualization and Kubernetes clusters under shared management. Its GPU scheduling also makes it relevant to teams placing AI or HPC workloads on managed infrastructure. It is less compelling for buyers seeking a low-cost, published enterprise tier or a platform focused solely on Kubernetes configuration.

Pros and cons

Broad infrastructure scope: One control plane spans on-premises, public cloud, and edge, with KVM VMs and Kubernetes clusters managed in the same environment.
Useful continuity features: Redundant control-plane components, node failover, and VM replication and recovery workflows address more than routine provisioning.
API and Linux flexibility: GUI, CLI, and several API styles pair with support for major Linux distributions, helping teams integrate with existing operations.
Enterprise costs require a proposal: Subscription prices are not published, making budget comparison less direct than with a fixed-price plan.
Enterprise releases are gated: Tested and certified enterprise releases require a subscription, so open-source users may not get those release assurances.
Support tiers differ materially: Community Edition does not include the stated subscription support, while 9×5 versus 24×7 coverage is tied to the paid tiers.

Alternatives

Apache CloudStack is a reasonable alternative for teams seeking open-source IaaS with a free plan and API, Linux, self-hosted, and web support; its listed Apache CloudStack plan is 0.00 USD per free.

Cloudify may fit teams wanting a free, no-time-limit community option and a free trial, provided they can set up Docker or a VM and have access to a cloud provider to run workloads.

Control Plane is worth considering for teams preferring usage-based monthly billing without contracts, minimums, or lock-ins; its CPU and memory rates are stated per unit, while OpenNebula enterprise pricing is custom.

Google Config Sync is a narrower option for teams already using Google Kubernetes Engine: it is included with GKE, subject to supported cluster versions and fleet registration.

Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform offers a free, Apache License 2.0 Community Edition and an Enterprise Edition with consumption-based subscription, making it an alternative for teams comparing Kubernetes platform options.

KubeSphere is another free, open-source community platform, described as an enterprise-grade Kubernetes container platform; it is worth considering when that focus matches the team's needs.

Xynvera is a paid API- and web-platform alternative.

Cycle is a paid option with a free trial. Its Lite plan costs 500.00 USD per month and includes four servers, four team members, 100GB image storage, seven days of metric retention, and 24-hour metric downsampling.

Verdict

Choose OpenNebula if your team needs self-hosted management across hybrid infrastructure, VM and Kubernetes environments, and potentially GPU-backed workloads, with high-availability capabilities in the same platform. Its strongest case is the combination of virtualization breadth, APIs, and operational control. Look elsewhere if published enterprise pricing or a Kubernetes-only management focus matters more than that scope.
