Overview

ICEcoder runs in a modern browser, online or offline, and combines code editing with terminal, database and Git management tools. That breadth can keep common website work close to the editor, while the server requirement makes it a different fit from an editor installed directly on a desktop: ICEcoder needs Apache or a similar web server and PHP 7.0 or newer.

The editing toolkit covers live editing, multiple selections, code assist, folding, bracket matching and automatic indentation. Find and replace can search the current document, open documents, files and filenames, using plain text or regular expressions. These are practical capabilities for navigating and changing website code, though the product's strongest case is its browser-and-server setup rather than a claim to replace every dedicated development environment.

Key features

Tools and customization

Built-in terminal, database and Git management make ICEcoder useful when those tasks belong alongside website editing. Adminer is available as a database-management plugin. Users can also install plugins or build their own with web languages; installation requires ZipArchive on the server, so plugin extensibility depends partly on server configuration.

A JavaScript-based API supports customization and plugin development. The IDE framework is MIT licensed, although some components have separate licenses identified in LICENSE.md. Teams incorporating or extending ICEcoder should account for those component-specific terms rather than treating the entire package as having one license.

Security and team use

Account login, IP restrictions, restricted or banned files, Bcrypt password encryption and strong password rules provide useful access controls. They do not make ICEcoder appropriate for untrusted users: multiple users are supported, but security isolation between them is not. Its intended setting is a trusted developer team.

FTP management was removed in version 8 because storing FTP credentials was considered a security concern. Teams that rely on editor-managed FTP should plan another workflow. The privacy policy says ICEcoder does not sell, rent or lend collected personal details to third parties.

Pricing

ICEcoder has one stated plan: Free at 0.00 USD per free. It includes a browser-based code editor and an MIT-licensed IDE framework, making it a straightforward option for individual developers and trusted teams that can host it themselves. There is no paid tier or seat allowance described in the plan, so the main costs to weigh are the server environment and the team's responsibility for operating it.

Platforms

ICEcoder is browser-based and supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and Internet Explorer 11 or newer. It can be used from an internet-enabled computer with a modern browser and can run online or offline. Downloads are offered through Git, Docker, Composer, Bash, ZIP and EXE formats. The listed platform range includes web, Windows, macOS, Linux and Android; regardless of client, ICEcoder still requires Apache or a similar web server environment and PHP 7.0 or newer.

Who it's for

ICEcoder suits developers maintaining websites who want a browser-accessible editor, built-in server-side tools and room to customize through plugins or its API. It is especially relevant to teams that can provide the required PHP server and trust all users who share the environment.

It is a poor fit where users need isolation from one another, where FTP credential management inside the editor is essential, or where a team cannot operate the required server stack. Those constraints matter more than the zero purchase price.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free plan and browser access offer a low-cost way to edit websites from supported browsers, online or offline.
Pros: Terminal, database and Git tools, plus Adminer, keep several common development tasks near the editor.
Pros: Plugins and a JavaScript API provide paths to tailor the environment for teams working with web languages.
Cons: Apache or a similar server and PHP 7.0 or newer are prerequisites, adding operational setup compared with a standalone editor.
Cons: There is no security isolation between users, limiting safe use to trusted teams even with login and access controls.
Cons: FTP management is absent from version 8, so FTP-dependent workflows need another tool or process.

Alternatives

For a wider set of PHP-focused choices, browse PHP IDEs or Code editors.

Scriptcase is a paid alternative with a free trial and a Starter plan at 399.20 USD per year, billed annually, for one developer seat and a single database. Choose it when a paid, seat-defined plan and its listed database options fit better than ICEcoder's free, self-hosted approach.
Visual Studio Code is free, has a free plan and supports Linux, macOS, web and Windows. It is a better candidate for readers seeking an editor across those platforms without ICEcoder's stated Apache/PHP server requirement.
Zed offers a free Personal plan with 2,000 accepted edit predictions and external-agent or API-key support, plus a free trial. Consider it when those plan capabilities are a closer match than ICEcoder's server-side tooling.
Eclipse PHP Development Tools is a free, open-source PHP IDE framework for Linux, macOS and Windows. It is a relevant alternative for readers seeking a desktop PHP IDE framework rather than a browser-based editor.
OpenIDE is another freemium IDE option with a free plan.
PaizaCloud Cloud IDE has a free plan for one server, with a server lifetime of up to 24 hours and up to four hours of continuous running while the browser is open. Choose it when those bounded cloud-server terms suit the work better than operating ICEcoder's own server environment.
Apache NetBeans is free for commercial and non-commercial use under Apache License 2.0, with Linux, macOS and Windows support. It may fit teams looking for a desktop IDE and a clearly stated permissive license.
IntelliJ IDEA has a free core for Java and Kotlin and an Ultimate subscription priced at 100.00 USD per year. It is worth considering when that language focus or the paid Ultimate tier better matches the team's needs.

Verdict

Choose ICEcoder if you want a free, browser-based website editor with terminal, database and Git tools, and can provide its PHP server in a trusted-user environment. Its extensibility and bundled tools are the clearest reasons to adopt it; look elsewhere if user isolation, an editor-managed FTP workflow or avoiding server administration is essential.
