Overview

Rubrik Security Cloud protects data across enterprise, cloud, and SaaS environments, with monitoring and recovery capabilities aimed at organizations managing varied workloads. It suits teams that need to connect backup and cyber recovery with data-risk monitoring; its breadth is a strength, but custom pricing and multiple deployment modes make fit and cost important to resolve before choosing it.

Key features

Air-gapped, immutable backups are designed to resist deletion, modification, and encryption by attackers. Threat analytics monitor ransomware and other risks, including anomalies, data destruction, and indicators of compromise. That pairing gives security and infrastructure teams both a protected recovery copy and signals to investigate, rather than treating backup as an isolated task.

Sensitive Data Monitoring discovers and classifies sensitive data, including structured and unstructured data, supports custom classifications, and can alert on potential policy violations. Cyber Recovery adds threat containment and recovery simulation, so teams can validate workflows and test their response. These capabilities are relevant where data exposure and recoverability need to be managed alongside protection.

The workload range spans AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft 365, Jira, Salesforce, databases, Kubernetes, NAS, and virtual machines, as well as on-premises systems. A GraphQL API exposes workloads, policies, events, and recovery, giving teams an integration path into their own tooling. MFA and SAML or OIDC identity-provider federation support access controls; cloud data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2 or higher and at rest with AES-256. Rubrik says its SaaS platform and Cluster Software Support Services undergo annual SOC 2 reviews; its Government offering has FedRAMP Moderate authorization.

Pricing

Rubrik is paid software with custom pricing. Foundation, Business, and Enterprise editions all direct buyers to contact sales, and Rubrik describes flexible yearly installments without publishing a price. Each edition lists the same capabilities: enterprise, cloud, SaaS, and unstructured data protection; mass recovery; Data Security Command Center; anomaly detection; threat hunting and monitoring; Sensitive Data Monitoring; threat containment; and Cyber Recovery Simulation.

Because the editions show the same feature set, the listed distinctions do not establish which tier fits a particular organization. Buyers should request pricing and confirm edition scope and deployment requirements with sales. There is no free plan, so teams looking for a no-cost way to evaluate or operate the product should consider alternatives with stated free offerings.

Platforms

Rubrik Security Cloud supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. It can run in SaaS mode or software mode; software mode provides standalone on-premises access to Rubrik CDM. This flexibility matters for organizations balancing cloud service operations with on-premises access, but the appropriate mode should be settled against the environment before purchase.

Who it's for

Rubrik is best suited to organizations protecting a mixed estate of on-premises, cloud, SaaS, and unstructured data that also need threat monitoring and tested recovery workflows. Its broad workload coverage and GraphQL API make it a stronger fit for teams coordinating protection across platforms than for a household or small office seeking a simple, low-cost backup utility. Buyers with a narrowly defined workload or strict budget should compare more focused products.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad coverage across cloud, SaaS, infrastructure, databases, Kubernetes, NAS, and virtual machines can consolidate protection across a varied estate.
Pros: Immutable backups, threat analytics, containment, and recovery simulation address prevention, detection, and recovery in one platform.
Pros: GraphQL API access to workloads, policies, events, and recovery gives teams a way to integrate core operations.
Cons: Custom pricing and no free plan make cost comparison and evaluation less direct for smaller teams.
Cons: The three editions list the same capabilities, so the edition names alone do not clarify the buying decision.

Alternatives

For narrower or lower-cost needs, VM Backup has a free edition covering two VMs per host and a 30-day fully featured trial, making it a practical starting point for small VM estates. IDrive offers a 10 GB Basic tier and a 100 GB, one-user Mini plan at 0.25 USD per month, which suits buyers prioritizing a stated storage allowance and low entry price.

Axcient x360Recover is another paid alternative with usage-based Direct-to-Cloud pricing. Duplicati offers a free tier for monitoring up to two machines and viewing the last 200 backups, a better match for small deployments with modest monitoring needs. Vinchin Backup & Recovery has a permanent free edition protecting up to three virtual machines, suitable for a limited VM footprint.

MSP360 Backup offers free personal workstation backup with file- and image-based backup, while Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows has a free Windows option with one backup job. AOMEI Backupper offers a perpetually free Windows PC backup edition. These options are worth considering when their narrower platform or stated free-plan scope matches the job.

Verdict

Choose Rubrik Security Cloud if your organization needs broad workload protection alongside data-risk monitoring and cyber recovery capabilities. Its strongest case is the combination of immutable backups, threat analytics, and recovery validation across a hybrid estate. Look elsewhere if a free entry point, transparent price, or a narrowly scoped backup product is the priority.
