Overview

JianTeX is a source-based academic writing environment for LaTeX and Typst, with offline desktop editing and a browser option for shared work. It brings together local files, Git workflows, and self-hosting in a free, MIT-licensed project, but its 0.1 alpha release is an important maturity caveat.

Its strongest case is for writers who want to keep working offline without giving up a path to collaboration or organization-controlled deployment. Teams that depend on a mature release or a visual editor should look elsewhere.

Key features

Source editing and PDF navigation

The desktop editor pairs LaTeX and Typst support with syntax highlighting, code completion, and live preview. SyncTeX links the source and PDF for navigation in both directions, useful when checking a rendered passage against its source. Tectonic, Typst, LuaLaTeX, XeLaTeX, and pdflatex are supported, giving users several compilation-engine options. This is a source editor, not a visual editor, so it suits people comfortable working in markup rather than composing through a WYSIWYG interface.

Templates and project portability

More than 35 built-in templates cover examples such as NeurIPS, ICML, IEEE, Chinese theses, and résumés. That range can help writers start from a familiar format rather than build one from scratch. Overleaf projects can be imported by Git link or ZIP, and JianTeX can clone projects from Git URLs, making it more practical to bring existing work into a local workflow.

Collaboration and deployment

The online version supports real-time collaboration, with collaborators’ cursors and selections visible. Automatic snapshots can be restored from a version-history timeline, and version history can sync to self-hosted Gitea or GitLab servers. GitHub and Google OAuth are supported for online sign-in; the desktop app needs no registration.

Self-hosting is the more consequential option for organizations that want collaboration data to stay within their intranet: in self-hosted deployments, that content does not pass through third-party servers. It adds a deployment path, not a reason to assume the early release is ready for every team’s production needs.

Pricing

Free and open source: 0.00 USD per free. The plan includes the desktop app, online version, and self-hosted option. The project is described as MIT licensed, with no subscription cost attached to these options.

That makes JianTeX a low-cost way to combine desktop writing with browser collaboration, rather than a tiered product that charges for added seats or features. The free plan’s terms do not establish seat or usage caps. Its main trade-off is maturity: JianTeX is offered as version 0.1 alpha, and code signing and notarization are rolling out by platform.

Platforms

JianTeX supports macOS, Windows, and Linux desktop use, plus a web browser version and self-hosted deployment. The desktop app works offline and stores projects as ordinary local files, so writing does not depend on an online account or connection. The web version adds collaboration, while self-hosting gives organizations an intranet deployment option.

Who it's for

JianTeX fits LaTeX and Typst users who value offline desktop work, local project files, Git portability, and a route to browser collaboration. Research groups and organizations with an intranet deployment preference have a specific reason to consider self-hosting. It is less suitable for teams that need a mature release today or prefer visual editing.

Pros and cons

Offline, account-free desktop writing: projects remain ordinary local files, and the desktop app requires no registration.
One editor for LaTeX and Typst: syntax assistance, live preview, SyncTeX navigation, and several engine options support a substantial source-writing workflow.
Flexible collaboration path: browser-based live collaboration, restorable snapshots, Git import and cloning, and self-hosted history sync connect individual work with team workflows.
Intranet deployment: self-hosted collaboration content stays off third-party servers, which can suit organizations keeping work inside their network.
Early-release risk: 0.1 alpha status and platform-by-platform rollout of code signing and notarization warrant caution for teams seeking a settled tool.
No visual editor: writers who want point-and-click document composition will need another approach.

Verdict

Choose JianTeX if you want free, offline LaTeX or Typst editing with local files and a credible bridge to browser collaboration or self-hosting. Its combination of Git workflows and intranet deployment is the clearest reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if your team needs a mature release or a visual editor; 0.1 alpha is a meaningful qualification, not a footnote.
