Overview

Paystack is a payment service for businesses operating in or serving Africa, with support for online and in-person sales. It is strongest for teams that want payment collection alongside transfers, identity verification and customer reporting. Its lack of subscription and setup fees lowers the fixed cost of entry, while transaction charges still matter to the economics.

Key features

Payment channels span cards, bank accounts and transfers, USSD, POS, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa QR and mobile money. That breadth can serve a business selling both online and at a physical counter without relying on a single checkout method. Paystack supports six currencies, though the stated local transaction pricing applies specifically to Nigeria.

APIs support one-time and recurring payments from an app or website, as well as instant transfers and customer identity verification. This makes Paystack more than a checkout layer for teams that need those operations in the same payment stack. Automated and manual fraud systems are intended to help protect against fraudulent transactions and related chargeback claims, but the service does not remove the need for a business's own risk controls.

The dashboard combines transaction reporting, alerts and exports with customer search and purchase insights. Those tools give operations teams ways to review activity and understand customer purchases, rather than leaving all follow-up to developers. Integrations include WooCommerce, Shopify, Chargebee, Zapier, Wix and Xero. Developers get API documentation and SDKs for Android, iOS and Flutter, while the platform coverage includes web and mobile. Paystack states that it is PCI DSS Level 1 and ISO 27001:2022 certified, and holds ISO 27701 certification for data privacy and protection. Its Customer Success team is available around the clock.

Pricing

The Paystack transaction pricing (Nigeria) plan is 0.00 USD per free, billed with no subscription; transaction fees apply. There is no monthly subscription, integration fee or maintenance fee, which suits businesses that want to avoid fixed platform costs. Local transactions cost 1.5% + NGN 100; the NGN 100 charge is waived for transactions under NGN 2,500, and local fees are capped at NGN 2,000. The percentage fee means costs still rise with payment volume, so teams should account for those charges when forecasting margins.

Automatic settlement is free and generally reaches the merchant's bank account the next working day (T+1). There is no separate paid subscription tier described; the trade-off is transaction-based pricing rather than a fixed monthly bill. That can fit businesses with variable volume, while companies preferring a predictable subscription cost may want a different model.

Platforms

Paystack supports Android, iOS, web and API use. Its documented API and SDKs for Android, iOS and Flutter give development teams several routes to integrate payment flows, while integrations with commerce and business tools can reduce the need to build every connection from scratch.

Who it's for

Paystack is a practical fit for startups, entrepreneurs and larger organizations operating in or serving Africa, especially those combining online and in-person collection with recurring payments or transfers. Its integrations and reporting also suit teams that want payment activity to connect with commerce, billing or business software. Businesses outside that focus, or those whose priority is a fixed monthly subscription rather than per-transaction costs, should compare other options.

Pros and cons

Pros: No subscription, integration or maintenance fee keeps fixed costs down; broad payment channels cover digital and in-person collection; APIs combine recurring payments, transfers and identity verification; reporting and customer insights support operational follow-up.
Cons: Nigerian local transactions still incur percentage and fixed charges, with the stated cap and waiver applying to the local fee structure; the detailed pricing provided is Nigeria-specific, so it does not establish equivalent charges for other currencies.

Alternatives

For a narrower direct-debit or mandate requirement, compare ClearDebit, Razorpay e-Mandate and Cashfree eNACH. Cashfree charges by mandate creation and presentation, with a separate platform fee. Powens offers custom API plans and a free trial; its enterprise plans include dedicated hosting and support. AccessPay uses a flat annual subscription priced according to estimated transaction volume, users and required data configurations and workflows. Debit Success is another paid API and web option. Rotessa charges 35¢ per transaction for 251–1000 transactions, making it relevant to teams processing that volume. Twikey is a paid API and web alternative.

Verdict

Choose Paystack if your business operates in or serves Africa and needs flexible collection channels, developer integrations and payment operations in one service without a subscription fee. Its key advantage is that breadth paired with APIs and reporting; look elsewhere if Nigerian transaction charges do not fit your margins or if you need a predictable subscription price.
