Overview

Install a server-side JAR and the map renders explored terrain as players move through the world, then serves it through an embedded web server. Browser access works with vanilla Minecraft clients, avoiding a client-side installation requirement for players. Dimension maps, a 2D view, markers and waypoints cover the core needs of a shared map.

This is a live map rather than an offline viewing tool. Full renders read region files on worker threads without loading chunks, while live access uses budgeted chunk snapshots. That design gives operators a way to render without forcing full chunk loads, though it remains tied to a running server for live use.

Key features

Toggleable layers cover claims, player positions, markers and Waystones. Claim overlays integrate with FTB Chunks, Open Parties and Claims, Common Protection API providers, and GriefPrevention on Spigot or Paper; JSON import is an alternative when an integration is not the right fit. Waystones support is optional on Fabric, Quilt and NeoForge, and LuckPerms can provide command permission nodes.

Privacy controls are unusually relevant for a public-facing map: operators can disable or round player positions, and invisible players and spectators are hidden by default. The documented player payload excludes health, inventory, chat and IP data. Operators still need to decide what to reveal through the map itself, since a location layer can expose player activity even without sensitive character data.

For modded worlds, startup scanning resolves block colors from installed mod JAR textures, with manual overrides when the result needs correction. An experimental mod developer API allows mods to provide colors, hide players, observe scan and tile-render events, and read documented HTTP endpoints. Read-only endpoints expose world and status information, player data and map tiles; versioned overlay endpoints and optional Prometheus metrics give teams additional integration paths. The API is a useful extension point, but its experimental status makes it a weaker foundation for a critical integration than a stable contract.

The embedded server binds to 127.0.0.1 by default, restricts request methods and connections, and has no built-in account system. The project recommends a reverse proxy for public maps; its lack of sub-path reverse proxying may also matter to teams whose web routing depends on serving applications beneath a shared path. The project says its only optional outbound connection is a one-time download of the official vanilla client JAR verified by SHA-1, and that it does not upload data.

Pricing

The Explorer’s Friend: 0.00 USD per free. The free, MIT-licensed server-side mod/plugin includes live map updates, dimension maps, a 2D view, markers and waypoints. There is no free trial because the product is free, and no paid tier or seat-based allowance is part of this plan. It fits server operators who can run the map on their own infrastructure; the trade-off is that they also manage deployment and public access security themselves.

Platforms

The project supports Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, Spigot and Paper, with different artifacts depending on platform and Minecraft version. It is available for Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as self-hosted, web and API use. Forge is not shipped, so Forge-based servers should look elsewhere. On Paper/Bukkit 26.x, biome colors use default tints because Minecraft 26.x removed world-generation JSONs from the server and client JARs.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for Minecraft server owners who want a live map, browser access for unmodded clients, and overlays that connect to common claim systems. It also suits teams that can put a reverse proxy and their own access policy in front of a public map. It is a poorer fit for operators who need built-in user accounts, sub-path proxying, Forge support or offline map viewing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Vanilla-client browser access keeps the map optional for players rather than adding a client mod requirement.
Pros: Claim integrations, markers, Waystones and player-layer controls make the map useful beyond terrain display.
Pros: Player-position privacy controls and documented exclusions from player payloads give operators concrete ways to limit exposure.
Pros: MIT licensing and documented read-only endpoints support self-hosting and integration without a paid plan.
Cons: No built-in authentication means public deployments need an external access approach, typically a reverse proxy.
Cons: No Forge artifact rules it out for Forge servers, while Paper/Bukkit 26.x loses biome-specific colors.
Cons: It does not provide offline viewing, and reverse-proxy sub-paths are unsupported.

Alternatives

If you are comparing server-side Minecraft map viewers, start with Minecraft World Map Viewers. For a separate category of file-management tools, see File Manager Software.

Pl3xMap is another free, MIT-licensed option for teams comparing downloadable server map projects.
BlueMap is a free alternative for Java Edition worlds; server plugin or mod use requires Java 25+, while its standalone CLI documentation lists Java 21+.
Dynmap is another free option with Linux, macOS, Windows, self-hosted, web and API platform support.
Worldlens is a free option with Linux, Windows, self-hosted, web and API platform support.
BedrockMap may suit a Bedrock-focused workflow or a limited hosted free tier: its free plan allows one world upload, a 1500x1500 block render area, two renders per day, three zoom levels and public sharing links.
Mapcrafter is free GPL-licensed software, but requires Anvil world format and Minecraft 1.6 resource packs.
uNmINeD is free for personal use and may suit an individual rather than a server team.
PocketMap is another free, web-platform alternative.

Verdict

Choose The Explorer’s Friend if you run a supported Minecraft server and want a live, browser-accessible map with practical claim and player overlays, without asking players to install a mod. Its free MIT license and server-side design are compelling; look elsewhere if you need Forge, offline viewing or native account controls, or if you cannot operate a separate access layer for public maps.
