Overview

Kananas is a membership-management platform for associations and other member-based organizations, with a dance-school offering for studios that need administration and teaching operations under one roof. It is best suited to studios that will use its membership, billing, scheduling, and event tools together; those needing only a narrow class scheduler may find its broader scope unnecessary.

Its strength is the combination of studio workflows with a member portal, communications site, and CRM. The trade-off is that contact caps, payment fees, and data-retention terms deserve attention before a studio settles on a plan.

Key features

Studios can schedule recurring classes and private lessons, assign teachers, and track student progress. Attendance tracking, tuition billing, instructor scheduling, and recital management extend that workflow beyond a calendar. This breadth can reduce the need to coordinate separate tools, particularly for studios that also manage memberships and events.

Kananas supports student and parent access, and its mobile app serves members and administrators on iOS and Android. The dance-school offering also covers event and recital ticketing. A built-in AI assistant is described as automating tasks and generating studio reports and insights; studios considering it should weigh that capability against their actual administrative needs.

Spreadsheet imports and imports from systems such as Mindbody and Jackrabbit offer a route for migrating existing records. For ongoing connections, Kananas provides a REST API, webhooks, and a sandbox, and says Zapier or Make can link it with more than 2,000 applications. These are meaningful options for teams with workflows to preserve or extend. The dance-school page supports USD billing and names Stripe as a local payment gateway for US studios.

Kananas describes security measures including access controls, secure communications, logging, backups, infrastructure security, and incident procedures, with a GDPR data-processing agreement in its terms. Customer support is available in US time zones, but response or resolution times are not guaranteed unless agreed in a plan or quotation.

Pricing

Kananas uses a freemium model, with a free plan, paid plans starting at $99/yr, and a 30-day trial. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows up to 50 contacts, making it a way to start with a small member base. That ceiling can become restrictive as a studio grows.

Paid plans start at 99.00 USD per year, billed $99/year, and start at 250 contacts. The M plan costs 366.00 USD per year, billed $366/year, and includes 1,000 members with all features. The entry paid tier suits organizations that need more contacts than Free allows; the M plan is the clearer fit for those needing its stated 1,000-member capacity and full feature set.

The free 30-day trial has no commitment and converts to the Free version afterward. The pricing FAQ says transaction fees are 2.4% plus $0.25 if the suggested tip intended to cover payment fees is refused, so studios should include that cost in their payment calculations.

Users can export their database or lists. An unused free account may be deleted after at least six months of inactivity; following a non-renewed subscription, data is destroyed three months after the term ends. Those conditions make timely exports and renewal planning important for studios that need to retain records.

Platforms

Kananas is available on web, Android, and iOS, and offers an API. Mobile access covers both parents and staff, while the API supports teams building integrations into existing workflows.

Who it's for

Kananas is a strong candidate for dance studios that combine classes and tuition with member administration, parent or student access, and recital or event operations. Its import and integration options also suit teams moving from spreadsheet-based records or established systems. A studio that wants only scheduling, or has fewer than 250 contacts and needs little beyond the free tier, should consider whether the broader platform and its plan limits match its requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros: Scheduling, billing, attendance, recital management, and membership tools share one platform, which can simplify administration for studios with overlapping needs.
Pros: Spreadsheet and named-system imports, plus an API, webhooks, sandbox, and Zapier or Make connections, provide several paths for fitting Kananas into existing workflows.
Pros: The 30-day no-commitment trial rolls into a free plan, giving studios a way to continue with a capped option after evaluating the service.
Cons: Free is capped at 50 contacts, while the starting paid tier begins at 250 contacts; studios should match these thresholds to their membership size.
Cons: Refusing the suggested payment-fee tip leaves transaction fees of 2.4% plus $0.25, which affects the cost of processing payments.
Cons: Data may be deleted after prolonged free-account inactivity or destroyed three months after a non-renewed subscription, so it is not a fit for teams that cannot manage exports and retention deadlines.

Alternatives

For a broader set of options, see Dance Studio Management Software. DanceTide is another freemium option with a free plan and web access. OttoDance offers a free plan and mobile apps; its Organization Funded plan uses custom pricing based on transaction volume and has the organization absorb fees, with flat card processing of 2.9% + 29¢. Stepsi has a free plan and mobile apps, and its Plus plan is 30.00 EUR per year for up to 100 active members; consider it when that stated cap and price better suit your needs.

Class Manager has a free plan with no monthly subscription and a flat service charge for online payments. StudioPartner has a free plan with a 30-student cap and mobile apps. Experience Dance is a freemium web option. The Studio Director is a paid option with a free trial and mobile apps. DanceBiz is a paid option with a free trial and support for Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Kananas if your studio wants membership administration, class operations, billing, and recital management in one service, especially if its import and integration routes matter to your stack. Look elsewhere if contact limits, payment fees, or post-subscription retention terms do not fit your operating model.
