Overview

Karaoke Mugen divides the work between a host and the room: the operator curates and runs the playlist, while guests can request songs from their own devices and, when enabled, vote on what plays next. That makes it a good fit for events where participation matters but a host still needs to keep the session moving. Quotas and song filters can help manage a busy queue, though the operator remains responsible for setting and enforcing those boundaries.

After installation, configuration, and updates, the app can run without an internet connection. Guests still need to be on the same Wi-Fi network, so this suits a prepared local event rather than a remote audience. Optional online features include update checks, karaoke repository downloads, online accounts, and a shortened session URL.

Key features

Queue and audience management

Operators can add, remove, reorder, shuffle, import, and export songs, including with smart shuffle. They can set song or singing-time quotas and use whitelists or blacklists to control requests. These tools offer more structure than an open queue, but they make Karaoke Mugen a host-led system rather than a self-running jukebox.

Sessions, automixes, and quiz mode broaden its use beyond a simple request queue. Users can save profiles and favorites online, and link AniList, Kitsu, or MyAnimeList accounts to get songs from anime they have watched. The app can also show the current song on a user's Discord profile.

Playback and extensibility

Playback controls include automatic volume adjustment, pitch and speed changes, and a synchronized second video player. Karaoke Mugen accepts video formats supported by mpv, uses ASS subtitles, and can import formats including Ultrastar, Karafun, and KBP. Dual-screen lyrics suit setups where singers and an audience need different views.

The WebSockets API gives builders a route to create additional interfaces or clients, while the MIT license makes the source available for inspection and modification. That openness is useful for teams fitting the software into a custom event setup; it does not remove the need to operate the session and manage its media.

Pricing

Karaoke Mugen is free: the Karaoke Mugen plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is MIT-licensed. There is no paid plan or free trial. That makes it a straightforward choice for private hosts and event organizers who want playlist, audience, and playback controls without a subscription.

The trade-off is not a tiered feature cap, but the work of preparing and operating the setup. Online accounts and other optional online features are separate from its ability to run offline after setup, and guests must share the host's Wi-Fi network.

Platforms

Karaoke Mugen supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with installers or packages for all three. Linux binaries require GLIBC 2.31 or higher, which can rule out older systems. The Windows portable version does not support automatic updates; users must replace its files with those from a new ZIP archive. Usage statistics are sent to Karaoke Mugen Server only with user consent.

Who it's for

Choose Karaoke Mugen for private karaoke with friends or public events where an operator should manage requests and keep the queue under control. Its local-network guest participation and offline playback suit venues that can prepare the host machine and Wi-Fi in advance. It is less suitable when guests need to participate remotely or when no one can take responsibility for running the session.

Pros and cons

Pros

Guest requests with host control: Guests can suggest songs and vote, while the operator retains the final choice and can apply quotas and filters.
Offline-capable sessions: Once configured and up to date, playback can continue without an internet connection.
Open and extensible: The MIT license and WebSockets API support inspection and custom interfaces.
Flexible playback and formats: Playback adjustments, dual-screen lyrics, mpv-supported video, and several import formats accommodate varied setups.

Cons

Local network required for guest participation: Guests must be on the same Wi-Fi network, limiting remote use.
Operator workload: The host manages playlist choices, quotas, and song filters rather than handing the session over to an automatic queue.
Platform caveats: Linux needs GLIBC 2.31 or higher, and Windows portable installs require manual file replacement to update.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Karaoke Software.

Kanto Karaoke Player&Recorder is worth considering if you need its Windows free version, but that plan caps playlists at five songs and recording and MIDI-to-MP3 conversion at one minute each, with no professional use.
KaraFun offers a free plan with free songs, Premium previews, access to all features, and one free quiz; its Premium plan costs 7.99 GBP per month.
OpenKJ is another free, open-source karaoke hosting option, with a separate OpenKJ Songbook plan at 9.99 USD per month.
Performous is free software for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Smule offers a free option for joining existing duets and a VIP All Access Pass for 19.99 USD per month.
TKaraoke is an alternative with a free version.
UltraStar Deluxe is a free PC karaoke game for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
Singa offers a Premium monthly subscription for 9.99 USD per month for private use.

Verdict

Karaoke Mugen is the right choice for hosts who want a free, open-source karaoke setup with guest requests, voting, and meaningful queue controls. Its offline capability and API add flexibility, but the host must run the event and guests need local Wi-Fi. Look elsewhere if you need remote participation or cannot accommodate its platform-specific update and Linux requirements.
