Overview

Building X brings building-operation applications and building data into a single platform. Its use cases span energy and sustainability, safety and security, and operations and maintenance, making it relevant to teams seeking a connected view of building performance rather than a standalone energy tool.

Connectivity is not restricted to Siemens devices: the platform supports Siemens solutions, gateways, and standard protocols. Open APIs cover application data, building data, and user account management, giving development teams routes to build applications and integrate systems. Siemens hosts the AWS-based service and handles deployment, reducing the need for customers to operate the cloud environment themselves.

Building owners retain ownership of building data and decide how it is accessed, shared, and used. Siemens describes cybersecurity-by-design controls for secure communications, data deletion, login protection, and storage; its cybersecurity management standard is modeled after ISO 27001. Building X has ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, and 27018 certifications and a SOC 2 Type II report, while Energy Manager is ISO 50001-certified.

Key features

Energy and building operations

Energy Manager tracks energy use and costs, benchmarks building portfolios, supports custom performance indicators, and provides analytics and reporting. Portfolio monitoring and carbon tracking make it useful for teams assessing performance across multiple buildings, while automated utility-data import and forecasting workflows support ongoing analysis. HVAC control, alarm management, environmental monitoring, and access integration broaden its operational scope beyond energy reporting.

APIs and connectivity

Open APIs and vendor-agnostic connectivity are meaningful advantages for teams integrating existing building systems or developing applications around building data. API Manager allows up to 200 machine users per partition and 75 per machine-user group. Those caps matter for larger or more finely segmented integrations and should be checked against the intended architecture before committing.

The platform also includes capabilities associated with modeling and analysis, including time-series modeling, model evaluation, automated machine learning, and batch and real-time deployment. These extend its potential utility for teams working with building data, though the core proposition remains building operations.

Pricing

Building X application or API subscription

Building X application or API subscription has custom pricing. Subscriptions are billed yearly, and Siemens asks prospective customers to request a quote. Customers can start with one application and scale to additional applications or APIs for their target use cases, which gives teams room to begin narrowly rather than commit to a broad rollout. Regional availability and cancellation policies require contacting Siemens.

There is no free plan, despite the freemium pricing model. That makes Building X less suitable for teams seeking a self-serve, no-cost way to evaluate an ongoing deployment; Siemens instead offers a personalized walkthrough, live demonstration, and answers to questions through its quote process.

Platforms

Building X supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, as well as API access. The Workplace Experience app supports mobile and web use, along with kiosk-supported access. Cloud deployment and Siemens-managed hosting mean customers do not need to run the platform on their own infrastructure.

Who it's for

Building X is a strong fit for building owners and operations teams managing energy, security, maintenance, or performance across connected facilities, especially when they need to integrate systems from different vendors. It also suits developers who want APIs for building and application data, provided the API Manager user limits align with their plans.

Teams that need a free tier, require more machine users than the stated caps, or prefer to control deployment themselves should weigh those constraints before choosing it. Buyers should also be comfortable with annual subscriptions and a quote-led purchasing process.

Pros and cons

Pro: Vendor-agnostic connectivity and open APIs support integration with existing systems and custom application development.
Pro: Energy Manager combines portfolio benchmarking, custom indicators, analytics, and reporting for multi-building oversight.
Pro: Building owners control access to and use of their building data, supported by stated security certifications and a SOC 2 Type II report.
Con: No free plan means there is no no-cost tier for ongoing use.
Con: Yearly subscriptions, custom pricing, and quote-based purchasing make costs and cancellation terms important to resolve before rollout.
Con: API Manager limits of 200 machine users per partition and 75 per group may constrain some integration designs.

Alternatives

For electrical design, Electrical Design Software is the more relevant category. Teams focused on modeling and analysis workflows can compare Predictive Analytics Software, while facilities teams seeking a direct building-operations fit can browse Building Management Software.

Teams prioritizing automated machine learning can explore AutoML Software, and those seeking broader data tooling can review Data Science Platforms. For a focused energy-management comparison, see Energy Management Software.

Trimble Viewpoint Vista is an alternative with cloud-hosted and on-premises deployments, pricing by contacting sales, and a free plan. ETAP is a paid alternative with a free trial and annual or multi-year subscription options for its Power Simulator Grow plan.

LabVIEW has a free Community Edition for personal, non-commercial use and a free trial. KDE Keysmith and KiCad are free alternatives; KiCad is GNU GPL version 3 or greater software.

MATLAB Grader is free with a MATLAB license current under maintenance, with LMS integration requiring a qualifying academic license. ProfiCAD offers a 30-day full-featured trial with no credit card. LTspice is free and unlimited, with Windows and macOS downloads listed.

Verdict

Choose Siemens Building X if your team needs a connected platform for building operations, portfolio energy management, and API-based integration across vendors. Its breadth and building-owner data control are the strongest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if a free plan, self-managed deployment, or higher API user limits are essential; annual, custom-priced subscriptions also make it important to establish commercial terms before scaling.
