Overview

Storware has focused on multi-vendor and multi-hypervisor environments since 2013. It describes one universal license covering more than 15 platforms, without per-hypervisor licensing—a useful simplification when infrastructure spans several vendors. For a small, single-platform deployment, that breadth may add little.

The product is agentless and policy-driven across most environments; Hyper-V requires a lightweight host agent. Fast recovery and granular restore capabilities aim to support both broad recovery events and specific file or workload restores. Its hybrid deployment model accommodates teams that do not want to treat backup as a single-cloud service.

Key features

Broad workload protection

Storware supports virtual server and application-aware backup, with coverage spanning VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, OpenStack, Proxmox VE, OpenShift Virtualization, and other hypervisors. Containers and cloud workloads are also in scope. This range can reduce the number of protection tools a mixed-estate team must coordinate, but it is more platform breadth than a narrowly focused environment may need.

Recovery and security

Instant VM recovery, bare-metal restore, cloud backup targets, and off-site replication give teams several recovery paths. Security controls include WORM immutability, air-gap isolation, AES encryption at rest and in transit, role-based access control, Keycloak MFA, and audit logging. Storware also holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification and describes GDPR commitments, relevant considerations for teams with formal security and privacy requirements.

Automation

A REST API and policy-as-configuration support pipeline-oriented administration. That makes Storware a better fit for teams that want backup policy managed alongside operational workflows than for buyers seeking only a standalone backup interface.

Pricing

Storware uses a freemium model. The Free license costs 0.00 USD per free, but technical support is not included. It may suit teams evaluating the product without a support requirement; organizations that depend on vendor assistance should account for that omission.

The 60-day trial costs 0.00 USD per free and includes up to 20 virtual environments and 20 applications. Storage provider backup is capped at 2 TB, as is Windows and Linux file backup. V2V migration is excluded, so the trial cannot validate that capability; teams evaluating migration should factor in the commercial version. Support team access is included during the trial.

Commercial licensing uses the universal-license approach across 15+ platforms, but plan pricing is custom pricing. The free options make initial evaluation accessible, while the trial quotas mean larger environments will not be fully represented by the trial limits.

Platforms

Storware lists API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms, with hybrid deployment. Its hypervisor coverage includes Azure Stack HCI, Citrix Hypervisor/XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, OpenStack, OpenShift Virtualization, Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager, oVirt, Proxmox VE, Red Hat Virtualization, SC//Platform, Virtuozzo, VergeOS, VMware vSphere, and XCP-ng.

Who it's for

IT administrators, DevOps engineers, and technology leaders managing multiple hypervisors or workload types are the clearest fit. API access and policy-as-configuration favor teams that want repeatable, pipeline-friendly operations; immutability, encryption, access controls, and audit logging also suit organizations with defined protection and governance needs. A small team protecting one uncomplicated environment may be better served by a narrower tool.

Pros and cons

Pros: One licensing approach spans 15+ platforms without per-hypervisor licensing, which can simplify mixed-vendor estates.
Pros: Agentless, policy-driven protection avoids broad agent deployment, with only Hyper-V requiring a lightweight host agent.
Pros: Instant VM recovery, bare-metal restore, granular restore, cloud targets, and off-site replication provide varied recovery options.
Pros: REST API and policy-as-configuration support teams integrating backup operations into pipelines.
Cons: The free license does not include technical support, limiting its appeal where vendor assistance is essential.
Cons: The 60-day trial caps environments, applications, and two backup categories at defined quotas, which may constrain evaluation of larger estates.
Cons: V2V migration is unavailable in the trial, preventing a full trial-period evaluation of that capability.
Cons: Commercial pricing is custom, so teams cannot compare a published price before engaging.

Alternatives

For a VMware-centered environment that also uses Cohesity NAS Views, consider Cohesity SiteContinuity; its customer-managed plan names VMware Standard or above and VMware VM and Cohesity NAS Views as its scope.

Choose Bacula Enterprise if endpoint-count-based annual subscription pricing and support response time are the relevant purchasing dimensions. For a modest storage need, IDrive offers a 10 GB Basic plan and a 100 GB, one-user IDrive Mini plan at 0.25 USD per month.

Duplicacy is an option for a home computer, with a Personal License at 20.00 USD per year for the first year and 5.00 USD per year subsequently. Duplicati fits a small monitoring scope: its free plan covers up to two machines and the last 200 backups.

For Windows PC backup, AOMEI Backupper has a perpetually free Standard plan. MSP360 Backup offers free personal workstation backup with file and image-based backup and forum-based support. Mac users needing a single backup job without direct object-storage backup can consider Veeam Agent for Mac's free edition.

For category comparisons, browse Virtual Machine Backup Software, Kubernetes Backup Software, or Container Backup Software. Broader directories include Backup and Disaster Recovery Software, Continuous Data Protection Software, and NAS Backup Software.

Verdict

Storware is a strong choice for IT teams protecting a mixed hypervisor, container, and cloud estate that value common licensing, policy automation, and multiple recovery paths. Its central advantage is breadth paired with pipeline-friendly control; its main drawback is that commercial pricing is custom and the trial excludes V2V migration while imposing quotas. Choose it when multi-platform coverage is a real requirement, and look elsewhere if a smaller, single-platform setup matters more than consolidation.
