Overview

Developed by Carnegie Mellon University's Open Learning Initiative, Torus brings course authoring and delivery together. Educators can combine rich text, media, and interactive activities, then use real-time student performance data to refine course content. That makes Torus more than a place to publish lessons: it is designed to connect instructional design with learner activity.

The platform applies learning science to course design and supports adaptive practice and learning paths. Its MIT license welcomes commercial use and industry collaboration, while an extensible activity framework can incorporate third-party learning activities. Teams can use a managed instance or run their own, trading operational control for the work of hosting.

Key features

Adaptive activities and scoring

Branched multiple-choice activities can route learners to follow-up questions based on their answers, enabling practice paths that respond to learner choices. There is an important scoring caveat: by default, Torus scores a branched activity against every activity on the page. A learner may complete the route they were given yet still miss full credit or a completion checkmark. Teams relying on completion signals or scores should account for this behavior in course design.

Reuse and course evolution

The Activity Bank stores reusable activities, including quiz questions, that educators can search, tag, and align with learning objectives. Components can be adapted or remixed, and course changes and derivatives support publishing and versioning. This is a practical foundation for institutions maintaining related courses, rather than rebuilding every activity for each version.

Analytics and AI

Real-time performance tracking gives educators a basis for adjusting content to learner needs. The Instructor Intelligent Dashboard arrived with Version 33, alongside Adaptive Pages enhancements, template management changes, accessibility improvements, and 151 platform updates. AI Activation Points require DOT AI to be enabled for the course section by a system administrator, so instructors cannot assume the feature will be available independently.

Pricing

Torus is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no paid plan or seat-based price stated; teams can choose a managed instance or self-host. The tradeoff is that choosing to host it yourself means taking on the responsibilities of running an instance. The free, open-source model is a strong fit for institutions that value control and reuse, but the product's cost alone does not determine the effort involved in deployment and course administration.

Platforms

Torus is available on the web, supports API access, and can be self-hosted. It supports LTI 1.3 (LTI Advantage) and is designed to pair with compliant learning management systems, which helps institutions fit it into an existing learning stack. Its extensible activity framework also leaves room for learning activities developed by third parties. The platform supports web and mobile delivery.

Who it's for

Torus is a good candidate for educators, researchers, and institutions that need to author adaptive courses, reuse learning components, and connect delivery to an LTI 1.3 LMS. It is particularly relevant where teams want to manage course derivatives or host their own instance. It is less suited to a team expecting branched activities to score only the path a learner followed by default, or instructors who need AI Activation Points without administrator involvement.

Pros and cons

Pro: The Activity Bank, remixable components, and publishing and versioning support make reuse across courses and revisions a core workflow.
Pro: LTI 1.3 support, API access, and self-hosting give institutions options for fitting Torus to their existing systems and operating preferences.
Pro: Adaptive branching and real-time performance data connect learner responses with course refinement.
Con: Default scoring counts all activities on a branched page, so a completed learner path may not earn full credit or a completion checkmark.
Con: AI Activation Points depend on DOT AI being enabled by a system administrator, adding an administrative prerequisite.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of adaptive-learning products, see Adaptive Learning Software; for platforms centered on managing learning content, see Learning Content Management Systems.

Axonify is a paid alternative with Android, iOS, API, and web platforms; its listed Premium and Pro pricing requires a quote and varies with team size, locations, and features. Rhapsode offers paid custom licensing across a wider set of desktop and mobile platforms, with pricing structures that include per-user, per-course, or revenue-share arrangements. Choose Duolingo instead when a freemium language-learning option with a one-week trial is a better fit. Khan Academy has a free plan and a U.S. school and district Enterprise Starter option at $10/student/year for up to 1,000 student licenses. MobyMax offers a free educator version with limited access compared with licensed features, as well as a $7.99 per month Family plan. Lumastery offers a free web plan for one child and one daily session, and a $19.99 per month Family plan. FullRecall is a free option across web, mobile, and desktop platforms, with no limit on database item count or size. IXL Math is a paid alternative with a free plan and trial, and a Family monthly plan at $9.95 per month for one child with unlimited access to school levels, interactive exercises, and real-time statistics.

Verdict

Torus is the right choice for education teams that want an open, adaptable course platform with reusable activities, learner-responsive practice, and LTI 1.3 integration. Its MIT license and self-hosting option are meaningful strengths for institutions seeking control over their learning stack. Look elsewhere if default branch scoring conflicts with your assessment workflow, or if your instructors need AI features without a system administrator's involvement.
