Overview

RemNote brings together note-taking, source-based study generation, and scheduled review for learners who want their own materials to become a working study system. It is best suited to students and educators who will use both its AI tools and spaced repetition; people looking only for a place to write notes may find the study features more than they need.

Its strongest case is the connection between annotated source material and several ways to practice it. The trade-off is that uploads and AI generation have meaningful caps on the free plan, and heavier use requires a monthly subscription.

Key features

Turn material into practice

RemNote can generate summaries, flashcards, and quizzes from notes, PDFs, and other sources. Cards support question-and-answer, fill-in-the-blank, list, cluster, and image-occlusion formats. Spaced repetition schedules cards to return over time, with adaptive review and practice quizzes offering further ways to revisit material. This range is useful when learners want both generation and ongoing review in one workflow; it is less compelling if they do not plan to study with cards or quizzes.

Annotate and cite sources

Users can mark up PDFs and slides with highlights, drawings, and shapes. Source citations help connect study material to its references, a useful addition for learners working from supplied documents rather than creating every prompt from scratch. Free users can annotate three PDFs, so frequent PDF study may call for a paid plan.

Study across devices

Desktop apps and mobile apps for iOS and Android cover both computer-based study and phone review. Notes and flashcards remain available offline and sync when connectivity returns, which supports study away from a reliable connection. RemNote also mentions shared flashcards and group licenses for classrooms and educational institutions, giving educators a route to shared use.

Pricing

RemNote uses a freemium model. The free tier is generous with unlimited notes and flashcards and unlimited synced devices, but its source and AI allowances are bounded. Paid subscriptions are billed monthly; the one-time Life-Long Learner option is aimed at buyers who prefer a purchase rather than a recurring plan.

Plan	Price	What it means
Free	0.00 USD per free	Unlimited notes and flashcards, unlimited synced devices, 3 annotated PDFs, 5 image occlusion cards, 1 handwritten document, 20 files per day up to 8MB each, and 250 AI credits per month. Free users can try each Pro feature a few times. The caps make it suitable for lighter study, but constrain larger or more AI-intensive workflows.
Pro	8.00 USD per month	600 files per day up to 300MB each, 1,000 AI credits per month, and 50 monthly runs for listed AI features. This is the practical step up for regular source uploads and moderate AI use, though the run allowance still puts a ceiling on frequent generation.
Pro with AI	18.00 USD per month	600 files per day up to 300MB each, 20,000 AI credits per month, and nearly unlimited runs of listed AI features. It fits users who rely heavily on AI generation and need much more monthly capacity than Pro provides.
Life-Long Learner	Custom pricing	One-time purchase with indefinite access to most Pro features. It suits buyers seeking a non-subscription option, though it does not promise every Pro feature.

RemNote offers a 25% education discount for Pro. Full refunds are available within 30 days of a subscription or license purchase. Payment options include credit cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Cash App, and Link.

Platforms

RemNote has desktop apps and mobile apps for iOS and Android. Offline access applies to notes and flashcards, which sync once connectivity returns.

Who it's for

RemNote is a good fit for students building a repeatable study process from notes, PDFs, and other source material, especially those who value citations, annotation, and scheduled card review together. Teachers and educational institutions may also find the shared flashcards and group licenses relevant. It is a weaker fit for users who only want basic note-taking or who need substantial AI use without a monthly paid tier.

Pros and cons

Pros

Source-to-study workflow: AI generation, PDF annotation, citations, and spaced repetition connect material collection with practice.
Multiple study formats: Question-and-answer, fill-in-the-blank, lists, clusters, and image occlusion support different kinds of material.
Useful free foundation: Unlimited notes and flashcards plus unlimited synced devices make it possible to maintain a substantial collection before paying.
Offline continuity: Notes and flashcards stay accessible offline and sync later.

Cons

Free source limits: Three annotated PDFs and 8MB maximum uploads can be restrictive for document-heavy study.
AI usage is tiered: Free includes 250 credits monthly, while Pro limits listed AI features to 50 monthly runs; intensive users may need the 18.00 USD per month plan.
Lifetime option is qualified: The one-time plan covers most Pro features, not necessarily the full Pro suite.

Alternatives

For a more focused flashcard choice, Brainscape has a free plan and supports Android, iOS, web, and API; its Pro plan is 7.99 USD per year and includes unlimited AI flashcard creation and unlimited certified flashcards. Choose it when flashcards are the priority and its listed lower-cost annual Pro plan fits better than RemNote's broader monthly study workflow.

StudyGlen offers a free plan and trial, with a Mini Pack at 4.99 USD per once for 10 study credits and 5 regenerations per day; its credits never expire. It may suit someone who prefers a small one-time credit pack over RemNote's monthly plans.

Recall has a free tier limited to 3 decks and 300 cards, while its Pro plans provide unlimited decks and cards with import, media, and analytics tools. Choose it when those deck-focused limits and capabilities better match the way you organize study material.

Jambo offers a free tier with 2,000 cards, 15 decks, 5 AI generations per day, and 100 translations per day. It is an alternative for learners whose needs fit those defined card and daily generation allowances.

Gizmo is another freemium option, with a yearly subscription paid up front for 365 days that auto-renews until canceled. Consider it if that yearly subscription structure is preferable.

Mindomax is a free macOS option with unlimited cards in one box. It may suit someone who wants a simple, Mac-only card system rather than RemNote's source and note workflow.

Quizlet offers paid tiers with monthly caps on practice tests, Learn questions, and Q&A or textbook solutions. It is worth considering when those practice formats align better with a learner's routine.

Knowt has a Basic plan with unlimited file creation, live collaboration, and storage, plus a library of 5 million resources; its Ultra annual plan is 12.99 USD per year. It may be a better fit for users who prioritize collaboration and browsing a large resource collection.

Verdict

Choose RemNote if you want notes and source documents to feed an ongoing cycle of AI-generated practice and spaced repetition, with offline access across desktop and mobile. Its free plan is a credible starting point, but document-heavy or AI-intensive study will run into caps. If your priority is basic note-taking or a narrower flashcard tool, a more focused alternative may be a better fit.
