Overview

Khan Academy is a nonprofit learning platform built around free academic coursework, with separate experiences for students, teachers, and young children. It is strongest for learners and educators who need curriculum practice without a platform fee; teams seeking formal credentials or a full district rollout should weigh its limits against their requirements.

Its 840+ courses cover core K–12 and early-college subjects, with personalized practice intended to help students master concepts and address gaps. The core learning platform is free, while Khanmigo subscriptions and district services add paid options. There are no degree programs or completion certificates, so Khan Academy works better as a learning and practice resource than as a credentialing destination.

Key features

Coursework and personalized practice: More than 840 free courses span core academic subjects from K–12 through early college. Practice focused on mastery and learning gaps makes the catalog useful for supplementing instruction or independent study, though it does not provide a completion certificate.
Khanmigo tutoring: The AI tutor guides learners toward answers across subjects from elementary school through college. That approach supports guided problem-solving rather than simply supplying answers. Paid learner and parent subscriptions are limited to the United States, and subscribers must be at least 18 with a U.S. billing address.
Teacher and classroom tools: Khanmigo teacher tools support lesson planning, feedback, student-work summaries, rubrics, and exit tickets. Khan Academy for Teachers combines standards-aligned practice, progress tracking, and AI support. Educator access to the free Khanmigo tools depends on locale.
Mobile and early-childhood learning: Android and iOS apps, as well as the web platform, support interactive exercises, mastery levels, synced progress, offline video downloads, and a scratchpad. Khan Academy Kids is a separate free, ad-free app for ages 2–8, with interactive books, games, and creative lessons.
School connections and safeguards: Teachers can import Google Classroom rosters. District plans add Clever or ClassLink rostering and single sign-on; those plans state that student privacy and data security are SOC-audited and FERPA- and COPPA-compliant, with a VPAT for WCAG 2.1AA. The privacy policy describes reasonable organizational and technical safeguards for personal information.

Pricing

Khan Academy uses a freemium model: the core learning platform is free, with paid individual Khanmigo subscriptions and school plans. That makes it practical to start with coursework and practice at no cost, while the paid tiers are relevant when tutoring or district administration is needed.

Khan Academy — 0.00 USD per free: Free learning platform for independent learners, teachers, and parents. It covers the core coursework, but does not include a degree program or completion certificate.
Khanmigo Teacher Tools — 0.00 USD per free: Free teacher tools subscription. Availability depends on educator locale, so it is not a reliable assumption for every teaching team.
Khanmigo Parent Subscription — 4.00 USD per month: Individual subscription, available only in the United States. Subscribers must be at least 18 and have a U.S. billing address.
Khanmigo Learner Subscription — 4.00 USD per month: Individual subscription, also available only in the United States, with the same age and billing-address requirements.
Enterprise Starter — 10.00 USD per year: Billed at $10/student/year for 1,000 or fewer student licenses at U.S. schools and districts. This gives smaller U.S. organizations a published per-student entry price.
Enterprise — custom pricing: For more than 1,000 student licenses. Includes administrator reporting and data insights, single sign-on, automated Clever or ClassLink rostering, and live professional learning and implementation support. The additional administration and rollout support fit larger districts, but the custom price requires a separate budget conversation.

Platforms

Khan Academy is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Offline video downloads give mobile learners a way to study without a continuous connection; synced progress helps carry work between devices. The free, ad-free Khan Academy Kids app serves children ages 2–8.

Who it's for

Independent learners, parents, and teachers who want free practice across school subjects are the clearest fit. Educators can use standards-aligned practice and progress tracking, while U.S. schools with up to 1,000 student licenses can consider Enterprise Starter at its stated per-student price. Larger districts may benefit from the Enterprise rostering, reporting, and implementation support. Khan Academy is a weaker fit when credentials are essential, or when an individual needs Khanmigo outside the United States.

Pros and cons

Pro: The free platform includes a catalog of 840+ courses, making broad academic practice accessible without an individual learning-platform fee.
Pro: Mobile apps combine interactive exercises, synced progress, mastery levels, and offline video downloads, useful for learners studying across devices or without a steady connection.
Pro: Separate teacher tools, classroom features, and Khan Academy Kids let schools and families use age- and role-specific experiences within the same ecosystem.
Con: There are no completion certificates or degree programs, so learners needing a formal credential should choose a different route.
Con: Paid Khanmigo subscriptions are restricted to U.S. residents with a U.S. billing address, and the subscriber must be 18 or older; that excludes many international families and younger purchasers.
Con: Free Khanmigo teacher-tool access depends on educator locale, while larger districts face custom pricing rather than a published rate.

Verdict

Khan Academy is a strong choice for learners, families, and educators who want broad free coursework, personalized practice, and supporting tools across web and mobile. Its core value is the breadth of no-cost learning; look elsewhere if credentials are a requirement, or if your organization needs district-scale features without custom pricing or your learners need paid Khanmigo outside its U.S. eligibility.
