Overview

Kismet is an open-source wireless capture and intrusion-detection tool for teams that need to collect and inspect traffic across more than Wi-Fi. It suits Linux- and macOS-based operators who can match capture hardware to its driver requirements, as well as teams centralizing remote collectors. Its breadth is valuable, but platform and mobility constraints make it a poor fit for plug-and-play analysis or dependable mobile WIDS coverage.

Key features

Kismet can capture Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, Zigbee, wireless-sensor, airplane-beacon, and power-meter data, subject to compatible hardware and drivers. That range is useful for teams investigating several wireless device types from one system; the qualification matters, since coverage depends on the adapters and drivers they can actually deploy.

It can run headless as a capture and WIDS system or through a web interface. Remote capture sends supported capture types over TCP sockets or websockets to a central collector, a practical option for distributed deployments. The kismetdb log combines packets, devices, location, and runtime data in a SQLite3-based file, giving teams a single record to work with.

For integrations, Kismet provides a REST-like API with JSON records, streaming pcap-ng, and websocket publish-subscribe endpoints. WIDS alerts can also flow through live packet and alert REST APIs, syslog, and some SIEM tools. Those options make it adaptable to existing analysis and alerting systems, though teams should account for the elevated privileges recommended for capture sources: the Kismet server itself should not run as root.

WIDS is most effective when the system is stationary. Mobile use or channel hopping can reduce accuracy and coverage, so Kismet is better suited to fixed monitoring than to continuous, reliable detection from a moving platform.

Pricing

Kismet costs 0.00 USD per free. The free and open-source plan has no stated usage limit or paid tier, making it viable for teams that can operate and maintain their own capture setup without a subscription. There is no free trial because the plan is free.

The trade-off is operational rather than a stated quota: users must supply compatible hardware and drivers, and platform restrictions can rule out some capture setups. There are no stated seat caps, renewal terms, or usage quotas to weigh against the zero price.

Platforms

Kismet runs on Linux and macOS, and on Windows through WSL. On macOS, support covers the Airport internal Wi-Fi adapter and certain named devices; generic USB Wi-Fi adapters are unsupported because suitable monitor-mode drivers are lacking. Windows via WSL cannot directly access local USB, PCI, or other hardware interfaces for packet capture, although remote capture is supported. Teams relying on local Windows capture hardware should look elsewhere or use remote collectors.

The downloads page identifies Kismet 2025-09-R1 as the latest stable release. The project points users to its documentation and community Discord for support.

Who it's for

Kismet fits network and security teams that need open-source wireless collection, flexible logging, and API or syslog paths into an existing stack. It is particularly compelling when operators can choose supported capture hardware and place sensors where stationary WIDS is effective. It is a weaker choice for teams that need generic USB capture on macOS, direct local capture under Windows, or dependable mobile detection.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad wireless data coverage gives teams one capture system for several radio and sensor types, subject to hardware and driver support.
Pros: Headless operation, remote collection, consolidated logs, and API endpoints support both standalone use and centralized workflows.
Pros: The open-source plan is free with no stated usage cap, avoiding subscription cost for teams able to run the stack.
Cons: Capture depends on compatible hardware and drivers, narrowing the practical choices on macOS and Windows.
Cons: WIDS accuracy and coverage may fall during mobile or channel-hopping operation, limiting its fit for roaming detection.
Cons: Capture sources need elevated privileges, while the server should not run as root; deployments must separate those roles carefully.

Alternatives

For wireless analysis alternatives, compare Wi-Fi Analyzer Software and Network Protocol Analyzers.

NetSpot is a better fit when a freemium Wi-Fi analyzer for Android, iOS, macOS, or Windows suits the job; its free edition is for personal and evaluation use on macOS and Windows.
inSSIDer is worth considering for macOS or Windows Wi-Fi scanning and visualization: its free download requires a free Oscium account, with MetaGeek Plus at 200.00 USD per year.
Parkdale is a free alternative for Android, macOS, or Windows.
WiFiman is a free option across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, but its desktop app supports only UniFi Device Discovery and Teleport VPN.
AirMagnet Survey PRO is another freemium option for macOS and Windows.
Hamina Planner is a freemium option for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, with Planner starting at $590.
Acrylic Wi-Fi Heatmaps is a freemium Windows option with a free trial.
BatteryMon is a paid Windows alternative, with a single-user license at 29.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose Kismet if your team needs broad wireless capture, remote collection, and programmable logging without a license fee, and can build around its hardware and operating-system constraints. Look elsewhere when local Windows capture, generic macOS USB adapters, or mobile WIDS reliability are requirements; those limits can outweigh its breadth.
