Overview

Koala Sampler turns microphone recordings or imported audio into beats and tracks, for producers who want to make music from samples rather than start with a conventional instrument arrangement. Its strongest appeal is a compact sampling-and-sequencing workflow that spans mobile and desktop; the 64-sample ceiling and separately purchased expansions matter if your work needs more room or deeper editing.

Key features

Koala can record up to 64 samples and offers a high-resolution sequencer, keyboard mode, quantization and swing. That is a useful toolkit for capturing sounds and shaping rhythmic parts in one app. The sample cap sets a practical boundary for projects that depend on a larger pool of sounds.

Projects export as WAV loops or tracks, and iOS adds export as Ableton Live Sets. MIDI control and Ableton Link support external control and Wi-Fi jamming, which make Koala more suitable for connected music setups than a sampler used in isolation.

The Samurai in-app purchase adds time-stretch algorithms, a piano roll, auto-chop, three-band EQ, a polyphonic synth and MIDI output. It is the more substantial expansion for users who need deeper sample editing and sequencing. Mixer adds four channels, a main bus and five effect slots per channel; it also hosts external plugins on iOS, Mac and Windows, but not Android. That platform split makes Mixer a less complete choice for Android users who depend on plugin hosting.

Pricing

Koala uses a freemium model, but the core app's terms differ by platform. The iOS app costs 4.99 USD per once as a one-time App Store purchase for iPhone and iPad; in-app purchases are sold separately. Android supports up to 64 recorded samples, but its price is custom pricing.

Mac, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi desktop builds are free for now, including the plan priced at 0.00 USD per free. The Windows build is in beta, so teams standardizing on Windows should account for that qualification. The desktop plugin has a 0.00 USD per free billed 7-day trial per computer; after seven days it stops working until a licence is purchased. A plugin licence covers one person and can be active on up to three computers at once.

Samurai and Mixer are separate in-app purchases, so the iOS base price does not include them. Desktop plugin checkout is handled by Paddle, which collects payment details; the maker says it does not see card numbers. Sample packs are royalty-free for music creation, but cannot be resold, redistributed, or included in other sample packs or products.

Platforms

Koala is offered for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. Desktop builds also include Raspberry Pi, free for now; plugin hosting in Mixer is limited to iOS, Mac and Windows. The maker says the iOS and Android apps require no account and do not send projects or audio to it, with microphone, file and photo permissions staying on the device. The desktop plugin sends computer information to track active licence computers, while projects and audio remain on the computer according to the maker.

Support resources include a help knowledge base, manual, learning resources and a contact route. The maker does not promise a specific response time for desktop plugin support, a consideration for teams that need a defined support commitment.

Who it's for

Koala suits beat-makers and mobile producers who want to capture or import sounds, sequence them, and move finished work out as audio. It is also a fit for MIDI-based setups and Wi-Fi jamming through Ableton Link. It is less compelling for Android users who require external plugin hosting, Windows users who need a non-beta desktop build, or sample-heavy projects that exceed 64 recorded sounds.

Pros and cons

Pro: Recording or importing samples, sequencing, effects and WAV export support a complete beat-making path without requiring a separate sampling app.
Pro: MIDI control and Ableton Link make it useful in setups involving external control or Wi-Fi jams.
Pro: Free desktop builds and a low one-time iOS price give different entry points across platforms.
Con: The 64-sample limit can constrain larger sample-driven projects.
Con: Samurai and Mixer are separate purchases, and Mixer plugin hosting is unavailable on Android.
Con: The Windows desktop build is in beta, and the plugin trial ends after seven days unless a licence is purchased.

Alternatives

Serato Studio is the clearer alternative for Mac and Windows users who want a free entry plan with one audio track, four decks and four scenes; its free plan also limits recording and sound-pack selection. Its paid Buy plan is 149.

DAWG is an option across Android, Linux, Mac and Windows, with a one-time price of 5.00 USD or more. DAWG Tools says the product is made by one developer who also makes Unity development tools.

MPC Beats is a free Mac and Windows beat-making option for readers who want a desktop-only alternative.

Auxy Studio is a freemium option for Mac and iOS. Drum Pads 24 is freemium on iOS and Android. MilkyTracker is free on Linux, Mac and Windows. Remixlive is freemium on Mac, iOS and Android, while Blocs Wave is a freemium iOS option.

Verdict

Choose Koala Sampler if you want to build beats from captured or imported sounds, with sequencing, MIDI and practical export in a cross-platform package. Its main advantage is that sampling, sequencing and output tools converge in one workflow; look elsewhere if your projects need more than 64 recorded samples, Android plugin hosting, or a stable Windows desktop build today.
