Overview

Storyloft is built around a manuscript editor paired with Eddy, an AI editorial assistant. The product also covers research, character and scene development, illustration, book design, and file preparation for publication. That connected workflow is its clearest advantage for authors who would rather keep a project’s working materials together than assemble separate writing and layout tools.

The AI is optional: Eddy does not change a manuscript unless the author requests an action, and the platform can be used without AI features. Storyloft says private project content is not used to train AI models. It also says hosted documents are protected with TLS 1.2 or higher in transit and AES-256 at rest.

Key features

Writing, editing, and research

Eddy can analyze a manuscript and suggest context-aware edits, which makes it more relevant to book-length work than a detached writing assistant. Its web research returns structured citations saved to the manuscript library, a useful arrangement for writers who need sources alongside their drafts. Authors who prefer a fully manual process can leave the AI features unused.

Worldbuilding and production

Worldbuilding tools and illustration features support characters, scenes, artifacts, and a consistent visual style. Book themes and cover design carry the project toward print and ebook exports, including EPUB and print PDF. Storyloft says its publication-ready files can be prepared for Kindle Direct Publishing and IngramSpark; it also supports DOCX export. This breadth is attractive for independent authors, though writers seeking only a focused layout tool may not need the larger workspace.

Pricing

Start Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes one manuscript up to 5,000 words, 10 image credits, 20 Eddy AI conversations, and unlimited worldbuilding. It is a way to explore the workspace, not a practical long-term plan for a full manuscript: users must upgrade to continue writing after reaching the word cap.

Storyloft Pro costs 39.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It adds unlimited manuscripts and Eddy access, research tools, charts and data visualizations, footnotes, endnotes, and themes. This is the relevant tier for authors developing multiple or longer projects and using the research and editorial features. Monthly subscriptions can be canceled at any time, and paid plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Lifetime Access costs 399.00 USD per once, billed once. It includes everything in Pro, future features and updates, and priority access to new AI features. That one-time option may suit a writer committed to the platform, but the monthly Pro plan is the lower-commitment route. Paid plans also include the 30-day money-back guarantee; subscriptions can be canceled at any time.

Platforms

Storyloft runs in a web browser and has desktop applications for macOS and Windows. Windows downloads support 10 and 11 64-bit, while macOS installers cover Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. This gives teams and solo authors a choice between browser access and desktop use, though Linux is not among its supported platforms.

Who it's for

Fiction authors, nonfiction writers, indie publishers, and authors who want a connected book-making workspace are the natural audience. The combination of manuscript tools, cited research, worldbuilding, and export options favors projects where writing and production need to stay linked. It is less compelling for someone who needs only a narrow design utility or wants to write beyond a short sample without paying.

Pros and cons

Broad author workflow: Editing, research, worldbuilding, illustration, cover design, and publishing exports sit within one platform, reducing the need to split book work across tools.
Author-controlled AI: Eddy’s changes require an author-requested action, and AI can be avoided altogether.
Clear export choice: EPUB, PDF, and DOCX exports support common ebook, print, and manuscript workflows.
Restrictive free writing cap: One manuscript and 5,000 words make the free plan a preview rather than a serious writing tier.
Meaningful monthly cost: Pro is 39.00 USD per month, so writers who need only occasional layout or export work may be paying for more capability than they use.

Alternatives

Book Layout Software is the broader category to compare if layout is the main requirement. Choose Blurb BookWright instead for a desktop book-design application with templates, layout suggestions, and offline editing; its Softcover photo book plan is 12.00 USD. Bookmint offers a free web-based option with 55 templates, unlimited books and saved projects, and print PDF and EPUB exports, though free exports carry a watermark unless activated.

Coverfairy is an alternative for cover-focused work, with four free one-time AI image credits and watermarked drafts. Folio Studio offers a free plan with one active project, selected templates, EPUB and watermark-free PDF export, and limited introductory AI and illustration features. Folius is worth considering for browser-based book preparation: its free plan includes unlimited books and chapters, Word import, themes, trim sizes, live print preview, and EPUB, Markdown, and backup export.

Koberger provides free formatting, design, layout, and preview, but exporting finished files requires Pro. Layoutly may fit a web-based workflow centered on book exports and collaboration: its free plan allows one book per month and five exports, while Pro is 29.00 USD per month with unlimited books and exports plus real-time collaboration. typesetting.ai is another web option for typesetting; its free plan includes tools and output formats, but results are kept for 24 hours and adjustments are limited.

Verdict

Choose Storyloft if you want manuscript development, research, worldbuilding, and book production in a single author-focused workspace, and are prepared to pay for Pro once a project grows past the free cap. Its strongest reason to choose it is that connected workflow; its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the 39.00 USD monthly price for writers who need only one part of the process.
