Overview

Lark’s strength is the range of work it can bring together: communication, scheduling, document creation, and file storage sit alongside workflow automation and developer APIs. In meetings, participants can edit shared Docs in the call window, which helps teams keep discussion and shared work together. Starter’s one-on-one meeting cap, though, makes it unsuitable for group calls.

Beyond the core suite, AnyCross offers drag-and-drop workflow automation and ready-to-use solutions. The App Directory covers third-party tools for areas such as collaboration, recruitment, expense control, CRM, and ERP. Lark Open Platform supports custom bots, web apps, blocks, and more than 2,500 APIs. That depth is valuable for teams with integration needs, but adds less for organizations seeking only a straightforward chat tool.

Key features

Communication and shared work

Chat, calendars, document creation, and cloud storage are combined in one platform. Editing shared Docs during a meeting is a useful way to work through a document without separating it from the conversation. The Starter plan limits meetings to one-on-one calls; teams that need group meetings should consider Pro or Enterprise, each of which supports up to 500 participants.

Automation and developer tools

AnyCross brings visual workflow automation together with integrations and ready-to-use solutions. The Open Platform’s bots, web apps, blocks, and API catalog offer room to build custom connections. Monthly automation allowances range from 1,000 on Starter and Basic to 50,000 on Pro and 500,000 on Enterprise, so teams with heavier automated workloads need to account for the tier caps.

Translation, integrations, and security

Starter includes unlimited real-time translation, a notable capability even on the entry plan. Integrations include Exchange, Outlook, Google Calendar, Gmail, AnyCross, Lark Developer, and Lark Base. Lark says it uses industry-standard encryption and continuous system monitoring, and that employees do not have user-data access by default. It also says its data compliance systems cover EU GDPR, US CCPA/CPRA, Japan APPI, and Singapore PDPA.

Pricing

Lark uses a freemium model, but prices are custom pricing across the plans below. The free Starter tier is aimed at small teams with simple communication needs; its 20-user cap, 100 GB storage allowance, 18 months of message history, 1,000 monthly automations, and one-on-one meetings make it a constrained starting point rather than a full-capacity team plan.

Plan	Capacity and limits	Best fit
Starter	20 users, 100 GB storage, 18 months of message history, 1,000 automations per month	Small teams with simple communication needs
Basic	500 users, 5 TB storage, unlimited message history, 1,000 automations per month	Teams that need more seats, storage, and retained history but can work within Starter’s automation allowance
Pro	500 users, 15 TB storage, 500-participant meetings, 50,000 automations per month	Teams that need large meetings and a substantially higher automation quota
Enterprise	Unlimited users, 15 TB plus 30 GB per user, 500-participant meetings, 500,000 automations per month	Large companies needing advanced security and organizational management

Basic raises user capacity to 500, provides unlimited message history, and expands storage to 5 TB, but retains the 1,000-automation monthly cap. Pro is the first listed tier with 500-person meetings and a major increase in automation capacity. Enterprise removes the user cap and adds storage per user, but is positioned for organizations with advanced management needs. Lark’s customer terms describe weekday help-desk email support from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Singapore Time, with an intended initial response within one business day.

Platforms

Lark supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, and offers an API. Its broad platform coverage makes it a possible fit for mixed-device teams, including those using Linux desktops.

Who it's for

Lark is best suited to teams that want collaboration, workflow automation, and developer extensibility under one roof. Smaller teams can start with Starter, but the 20-user, 100 GB, and one-on-one meeting limits are material constraints. Organizations with larger user bases, group-meeting needs, or substantial automation workloads should compare higher tiers; large companies seeking advanced security and organizational management are the stated audience for Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pros: Chat, calendars, documents, storage, and meetings are brought together, with shared-Doc editing during calls.
Pros: AnyCross, the App Directory, and an Open Platform with more than 2,500 APIs offer several ways to extend workflows.
Pros: Starter includes unlimited real-time translation, and Lark supports web, desktop, and mobile platforms including Linux.
Cons: Starter caps teams at 20 users and 100 GB, retains messages for 18 months, and limits meetings to one-on-one.
Cons: Basic still allows only 1,000 automations per month, while larger automation quotas require Pro or Enterprise.
Cons: Plan prices are custom pricing, so teams must assess tier fit without a stated price to compare.

Alternatives

For a narrower calendar need, Calendar.com has a free-forever individual plan and a Standard plan starting at 20.00 USD per month; choose it when an individual calendar tool is a closer match than Lark’s broader workplace suite. Teamup offers a free plan with five sub-calendars, five users, one custom field, and one year of historical data, making it an option when those calendar limits fit the team. 7shifts has a free Comp plan capped at 15 employees and one location, while Essentials supports 30 employees and unlimited locations; consider it when those staffing limits align with the use case. Slotly has a free plan with one event type and up to 100 bookings per month, for teams whose needs fit that booking cap.

For open-source email and calendar software, Mozilla Thunderbird offers email, calendar, contacts, and multiple-account support. Microsoft Outlook Calendar is another calendar option, with a one-month trial for Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium. Proton Calendar has a free tier with three calendars. Reclaim AI offers a free Lite plan with one user, a one-week scheduling range, one calendar sync, one scheduling link, and five AI agents.

Verdict

Choose Lark if your team wants communication, shared documents, automation, and developer APIs in one platform, especially when you can use its integrations and workflow tools. Look elsewhere if Starter’s user, storage, message-history, or meeting limits constrain the work, or if you need to compare plans against a published price.
