Overview

LibreTexts brings together 17 subject libraries and more than 2,000 textbooks, whose chapters instructors can remix into custom books. That breadth gives teaching teams a starting point for adapting material rather than assembling every course resource from scratch. Books can be downloaded as PDF, EPUB, or editable files, and offline access, annotations, and read-aloud support help extend their use beyond the browser.

Individual educators can create, adapt, and host OER at no charge. LibreNet membership is open to K–12 and higher education institutions, making the platform relevant both to individual instructors and campuses coordinating resources. The core platform has a cap of five custom textbooks per institution, so that free route may not fit institutions needing larger-scale customization.

Key features

Assessment and interactive content

ADAPT supports formative and summative assessment and draws on a shared bank of more than 240,000 openly licensed question elements. Textbook pages can also embed Jupyter Notebooks, ADAPT homework, 3D visualizations, and videos. Together, these tools can connect course reading to practice and coding work; teams that need the broader combination should compare the per-student service charges under All-Access.

LMS, identity, and accessibility

LibreTexts says its platform and homework services can be embedded in institutional LMS platforms over a secure connection, with optional grade and assessment exchange. A guide covers importing books into Canvas, Moodle, and D2L through IMS Common Cartridge 1.1, and also mentions Blackboard. Institutional Google Workspace or Microsoft Active Directory can be used for sign-in; those services share only the user's email with LibreTexts.

The organization states a goal of meeting or exceeding Revised Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA standards, with accessibility audits at major development milestones. It also offers free support tickets, monthly webinars, weekly office hours, and free Academy lessons, giving educators several support and training routes without a stated service fee.

LibreTexts says it does not accept advertising or sell, rent, or lease user lists to third parties. Its privacy policy describes collecting information users provide voluntarily and anonymous Google Analytics demographics. It also says it cannot guarantee protection against unauthorized disclosure despite efforts to safeguard data, a limitation institutions should weigh in their privacy and risk review.

Pricing

The core platform is free and includes textbook access, instructor ADAPT access, general-use textbooks, and free H5P and ADAPT authoring, with up to five custom textbooks per institution. It is the natural starting point for individual educators and institutions whose needs fit that cap.

ADAPT, The Forge, and Jupyter Hub are shown at 0.00 USD per free, with a charge of 15$/ 6 months per student for unlimited courses; California institutions receive ADAPT free. ADAPT is for assessment, The Forge adds a student writing platform with word processor, slide decks, spreadsheets, and process analytics, and Jupyter Hub provides collaborative notebooks for coding courses. These charges are per student, so institutions should account for enrollment when choosing services. All-Access is shown at 0.00 USD per free and billed 30$/ 6 months per student for unlimited courses; it combines ADAPT Homework, Jupyter Hub, and The Forge for teams that need all three.

LibreNet Consortium (affiliate) costs 1250.00 USD per year, per campus, and is available only with full membership at the campus or system level. Full membership costs 2500.00 USD per year and includes unlimited custom textbooks at an institution, early access to new technologies, a branded Campus Commons page, and two Academy Online training seats. These campus-level options suit institutions seeking a formal membership and broader textbook capacity rather than relying on the core cap. The pricing model is freemium, with paid plans from $15/mo.

Platforms

LibreTexts is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Its LMS embedding and imports are useful for institutions already delivering courses through supported systems, while downloadable formats offer an offline route for book content.

Who it's for

LibreTexts is a strong fit for educators assembling courses from open materials, especially when they want remixable textbooks alongside assessment, interactive content, and LMS delivery. Institutions can start with the free core or consider membership when they need unlimited custom textbooks and campus-level features. It is a weaker fit for teams whose adoption depends on a guarantee against unauthorized data disclosure, which LibreTexts does not provide.

Pros and cons

Pro: A broad base of 17 libraries and more than 2,000 textbooks gives instructors substantial material to remix.
Pro: ADAPT, embedded interactive content, and LMS connections support a course workflow that goes beyond distributing static books.
Pro: The core is free, and individual educators can create, adapt, and host OER without charge.
Con: The free core limits each institution to five custom textbooks; unlimited custom textbooks require full consortium membership.
Con: Several services charge per student, while consortium plans carry annual campus costs, which can change the economics of broader adoption.
Con: LibreTexts cannot guarantee protection against unauthorized disclosure, a material constraint for institutions evaluating data risk.

Alternatives

Choose DIKSHA if a free option built on MIT-licensed open-source technology and available on Android, iOS, and web better matches your priorities. Choose VitalSource Bookshelf if you want an app spanning desktop and mobile platforms; the app is free to install, but eTextbook content may require purchase or an active license, with use on up to two computers and two mobile devices.

Opiq is another freemium option for readers comparing digital textbook platforms. BibliU may suit institutions considering a paid, flat-fee-per-student, per-text model for course sections using content. Kortext is an alternative with institutional pricing tailored to needs and budget. Cambridge Aspire offers a three-month subject eTextbook Collection trial for instructors. eLibro offers institutional access through a subscription quoted by a country representative. KITABOO is another option to consider for its paid plans and trial.

Verdict

Choose LibreTexts if you are an educator or institution building courses around remixable open textbooks and want assessment, interactive content, and LMS delivery in the same platform. Its free core makes that work accessible, but the five-book institutional cap, per-student service charges, and annual membership costs matter as needs grow. Institutions should also look elsewhere if their adoption requires a guarantee against unauthorized data disclosure.
