Overview

LUNA is Universal Audio’s DAW for recording, producing, and mixing music. It best suits musicians who want a capable free starting point, especially Apollo owners seeking tighter hardware integration. The main trade-off is a multi-part account and licensing setup, alongside a Windows limitation for sessions that use AU plug-ins.

Key features

LUNA’s smart tools cover tempo and instrument detection, voice control, stem separation, audio-to-MIDI, lyric transcription, and chord extraction, though some require Studio. LUNA Play detects an instrument, sets levels, and suggests presets to help get an idea into a session quickly. That makes the free edition useful for sketching and recording, while the Studio boundary matters if a workflow depends on the more advanced smart tools.

The DAW works with any audio interface, so Apollo is optional. Apollo users gain real-time tracking with UAD plug-ins, Unison preamp technology, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring. LUNA hosts VST3 and AU plug-ins and virtual instruments. Studio adds API, Studer, and Ampex console or tape extensions, hardware inserts, and six ARA plug-ins; these are meaningful reasons to upgrade for producers who need those tools, but not a requirement for basic recording.

Installation and authorization require a free Universal Audio account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and a free iLok account. A license can be activated at up to three simultaneous locations, and an activation can be deauthorized to free a location. Sessions can move between macOS and Windows, but AU plug-ins will not load when a session is opened on Windows. Teams sharing sessions across operating systems should therefore favor plug-ins supported on both systems.

Pricing

LUNA Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape. It is a strong starting point for musicians who want to record and produce without paying for a plan, though some smart capabilities and Studio production tools are reserved for paid tiers.

LUNA Studio is priced at 199.00 USD per month. It includes 30 UAD plug-ins and instruments, six ARA plug-ins, console and tape extensions, advanced smart features, and hardware inserts. This fits producers who need those specific additions; the monthly price is difficult to justify if the free tools already cover the session’s needs.

UAD Spark Studio costs 149.00 USD per year, billed annually. It includes LUNA Studio, 70 UAD plug-ins, and regularly added plug-ins, making it the lower-cost route for users who want Studio features alongside a larger plug-in collection. Its annual billing is the key commitment. LUNA also presents a paid-from figure of 49 one-time, but that figure does not identify a plan, so it is not a clear basis for choosing between the tiers.

Platforms

LUNA supports macOS Big Sur 11 through Tahoe 26 and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, and requires 600 MB of available system storage. VST3 support helps keep plug-in choices portable, while AU compatibility is limited to macOS sessions. Universal Audio provides an online knowledge base, online manual, and downloadable PDF manual.

Who it's for

LUNA is a good fit for musicians who want unlimited tracks in a free DAW, want smart tools for capturing or shaping ideas, or already use Apollo hardware. It is less suitable for teams that rely on AU plug-ins in sessions shared with Windows users, or for anyone who wants to avoid setting up separate UA and iLok accounts and software.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free plan includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape, so recording does not depend on a paid tier.
Pros: Any audio interface works, while Apollo owners can use deeper tracking and monitoring integration.
Pros: Studio offers distinct production additions, including six ARA plug-ins and hardware inserts.
Cons: Authorization requires a UA account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and an iLok account, adding setup overhead.
Cons: AU plug-ins do not load in Windows-opened sessions, which complicates cross-platform collaboration.
Cons: Studio’s listed monthly price is substantially higher than Spark Studio’s annual price, so buyers should weigh whether they need its particular tools and plug-in bundle.

Alternatives

For other options, browse Digital Audio Workstations, Audio Plugins, or Audio Editing Software. Guitar Rig is a narrower choice for users seeking a standalone application and plug-in in its free Player edition. Airwindows Consolidated is a free, open-source DAW plug-in collection for users who need effects rather than a full DAW. Buddi is a free GPLv2 budgeting application, not a music-production substitute. x42-plugins offers individual plug-in licenses, including a Whirl Speaker license for 19.00 USD once, rather than LUNA’s integrated DAW workflow. Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst, ToneBytes Pedals, Valhalla DSP Plugin Collection, and GNUitar are other listed plug-in options.

Verdict

Choose LUNA if you want a no-cost DAW with unlimited tracks and useful idea-capture tools, or if Apollo integration is a priority. Look elsewhere if cross-platform sessions depend on AU plug-ins or if the UA and iLok authorization stack is unwelcome. Studio is best reserved for producers who will use its advanced smart features, ARA plug-ins, hardware inserts, and console or tape extensions.
