Overview

Micro is a free, open-source terminal text editor for people who work in a shell or regularly edit files over SSH. Its strongest case is a capable editing toolkit in a single static binary, without dependencies. It is a poor fit for anyone who relies on Vi or Vim keybindings.

Key features

Micro combines the portability of a terminal editor with features that make it useful beyond quick configuration edits: splits and tabs, persistent undo, macros, soft wrapping, line numbers, Unicode support, a diff gutter, simple autocompletion, and linting notifications. Syntax highlighting covers more than 130 languages, and language-server support adds a route to richer language-aware editing.

Customization is approachable for teams that want to adjust behavior without adopting a separate configuration language for everything: options and keybindings use JSON, while Lua can extend the editor. Its Lua plugin system includes a manager for installing, removing, and updating plugins. Multiple cursors, mouse selection, and a real interactive shell inside the editor round out a workflow that remains centered on the terminal.

The single batteries-included static binary has no dependencies, which is a practical advantage when setting up an editor on remote or constrained systems. That simplicity has boundaries: on Linux desktops, external clipboard access requires xclip or xsel for X11, or wl-clipboard for Wayland. Micro supports Windows, but Mingw and Cygwin are not officially supported.

Pricing

Open-source Micro editor — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan provides the editor as a single static binary with no dependencies. There are no paid tiers to weigh against its editing capabilities; the trade-off is that users who need Vim emulation or Vi keybindings will need another editor rather than a higher Micro plan.

Platforms

Micro supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as OpenBSD, NetBSD, Illumos, and other systems where Go and its terminal library run. Its terminal-first design suits remote editing, while Linux desktop users should account for the separate clipboard utility requirement when they need to exchange text with other applications.

Who it's for

Micro is a strong choice for developers and operators who want a capable editor available in a terminal, especially when they regularly work over SSH or value a portable binary that can be copied without dependency setup. Its JSON configuration, Lua extensibility, and rebinding support also suit teams that want to tailor a terminal workflow.

It is not the right choice for users whose muscle memory depends on Vi or Vim: Micro does not provide either emulation or Vi keybindings. It is also less convenient on Linux desktops if clipboard integration is essential and the required clipboard utility is absent.

Pros and cons

Pro: The dependency-free static binary simplifies deployment on remote machines and across supported systems.
Pro: Plugins, language servers, syntax highlighting, and practical editing tools make it more than a minimal terminal editor.
Pro: JSON settings and keybindings plus Lua extensions let users adapt the editor without giving up its compact terminal workflow.
Con: No Vi or Vim emulation makes it an awkward switch for users who depend on those keybindings.
Con: Linux desktop clipboard access depends on an external utility, adding setup for users who expect clipboard integration out of the box.
Con: Mingw and Cygwin are not officially supported on Windows, narrowing its fit for those environments.

Alternatives

Neovim is the more natural pick for users who want a free editor with Vi-style lineage or need Android and self-hosted platform support. For a broader set of editors, see Go IDEs, Code editors, and Text Editors.

NumenText is another free terminal IDE option. Visual Studio Code is worth considering when web support matters alongside desktop platforms. Zed suits readers looking for a free personal code editor with accepted edit predictions and external-agent or API-key support. Devin Desktop is an alternative for users seeking coding agents, with a free tier and a Pro plan at 20.00 USD per month.

Kate is a free cross-platform text editor alternative. VSCodium is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. CodeDroid is a free, open-source alternative for users who also need Android, iOS, or web support.

Verdict

Choose Micro if you want a free, extensible terminal editor that travels easily between machines and has enough features for sustained coding, not just quick file edits. Its compact binary and Lua plugin ecosystem are the reasons to pick it; the lack of Vi and Vim keybindings is the clearest reason to look elsewhere.
