Overview

Perplexity is an AI search and research service for people who want generated answers tied to web sources and their own work materials. It is a strong fit for researchers and teams that value citations and flexible model choice; its clearest trade-off is that heavy use and business controls push the price well above the free tier, while API usage is billed separately.

Key features

Answers with citations and model choice

Perplexity searches the open web in real time and returns concise answers with inline citations attached to claims. That makes it easier to inspect where an answer came from and pursue a source, although citations do not remove the need to assess the material yourself. It can select among more than 20 leading models for a search, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Nemotron, which is useful for teams seeking model flexibility in one service rather than committing every query to one model.

Research and unified search

Deep Research performs dozens of searches across hundreds of sources and produces a report. That is a more substantial workflow than a quick answer, though the higher research limits are reserved for Max. Unified search spans the web, files, and connected apps, allowing questions to reach beyond public pages. Pro adds Computer, premium data sources, web search, files, apps, model council, and model selection; Max raises Deep Research, resource-generation, file-upload, and monthly video-creation limits.

Computer, apps, and privacy

Pro includes 4,000 additional Computer credits, while Max includes 35,000 additional credits and 10,000 Computer credits per month. Personal Computer runs within the macOS app and requires macOS 15 or later, so that capability is not a general desktop feature across platforms. The comparison states that more than 400 app connectors can be connected. The connector service says it provides SOC 2, encryption, continuous monitoring, point-in-time backups, and 30-day retention. Perplexity states SOC 2 Type 2 certification, GDPR-aligned and HIPAA-aligned safeguards, and PCI compliance. Enterprise Pro and Max do not use customer data to train AI models and offer SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and data-retention controls, which makes them more relevant where administration and privacy controls matter.

Pricing

Perplexity uses a freemium model, with plans ranging from free access to per-seat enterprise subscriptions. The cheaper options work for lighter individual use, but their limits matter if the service becomes part of a regular research or team workflow.

Plan	Price	What it means
Free	0.00 USD per free	Limited daily use for individuals and limited weekly use suited to simple questions. A useful starting point, but not a dependable allowance for sustained heavy work.
Pro	20.00 USD per month	Expanded access and higher limits, Pro features, and 4,000 additional Computer credits. A sensible individual upgrade for recurring research and file or app workflows.
Max	200.00 USD per month	Maximum Computer use and highest usage limits, including 35,000 additional Computer credits and 10,000 Computer credits per month. It targets professionals, creators, strategists, academic researchers, and power users; the steep premium is difficult to justify unless those higher limits are needed.
Education Pro	Custom pricing	For verified students and educators, with Pro features, Learn Mode, file and image uploads, and premium models.
Enterprise Pro	40.00 USD per seat per month	Per-seat subscription with 400 Pro Searches per week and 100 file uploads per week, alongside enterprise privacy and administration options.
Enterprise Max	325.00 USD per seat per month	Per-seat subscription with 4,000 Pro Searches per week, 800 Browser Agent queries per month, 1,000 file uploads per week, 10,000 personal files, and 5,000 files per project. It also supports 15 monthly video generations.

Enterprise seats in an organization are consolidated onto one invoice, and admins can manage members, billing, and seat counts. Monthly or yearly subscriptions are available; major credit cards are accepted, with invoice and wire transfer options in checkout. Self-serve trials are not offered for Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max. Accidental purchases can be handled by contacting support under the refund policy. Max subscribers receive priority support, dedicated infrastructure, and faster response times. API access is not included with Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max and requires separate credits; Max's advanced model access applies within Perplexity web, not programmatic API access.

Platforms

Perplexity is available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and the web, and API access is listed. Comet is available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. This broad device coverage suits mixed-device users, but teams integrating the service into software should budget API credits separately from subscription seats.

Who it's for

Perplexity is best suited to people who regularly need cited web answers, multi-source research, or a way to search files and connected apps alongside the public web. Pro fits individuals who have outgrown limited free use. Max is for users whose Computer, Deep Research, file, or generation workloads make its higher limits worthwhile. Enterprise plans are more appropriate for organizations that need seat administration, consolidated billing, and privacy controls; the per-seat pricing makes them less attractive for casual or loosely coordinated groups.

Pros and cons

Inline citations on every response: gives readers a route to inspect the basis for claims rather than treating an answer as an opaque summary.
Broad search and model coverage: combines web, files, connected apps, and selection among more than 20 leading models in one service.
Meaningful enterprise controls: SSO, SCIM, audit logs, retention controls, and organization-level seat management support managed deployments.
Free use is constrained: limited weekly use is suited to simple questions, so frequent users will likely need a paid tier.
Max is expensive: at 200.00 USD per month for an individual, its highest limits make sense chiefly for substantial workloads.
API costs are separate: enterprise subscriptions do not include API usage, and Max's advanced model access does not extend to programmatic use.

Alternatives

For a broader starting point, browse AI chatbots and assistants, AI Search Engines, or AI Research Assistants; teams considering inbox workflows can also compare AI Email Assistants.

Claude is a reasonable alternative when Linux or browser-extension access matters; its free plan includes limited usage and up to five projects.
Poe is another freemium option, with a free plan that specifies a 200k-token context length.
AnythingLLM is worth considering when self-hosting with Docker and an open-source deployment is the priority.
Dust offers a free tier with 500 lifetime credits and a Pro plan priced in euros, making it an option to compare for credit-based team use.
ChatGPT is an alternative with a free plan for trying the service, including limited messages with uploads and limited, slower image generation.
Microsoft Copilot has a free plan with access subject to capacity and usage limits, and a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.
Gemini is another free option that includes app access, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, and Gems.
Grok offers free real-time web and X search, voice mode, and connectors.

Verdict

Choose Perplexity if sourced answers, multi-model search, and a unified route into web pages, files, and connected apps matter more than a low ceiling on monthly spend. Pro is the practical step up for regular individual work, while Enterprise adds useful administration and privacy controls at per-seat rates. Look elsewhere if you need API usage bundled into the subscription or cannot justify Max's price for its higher limits.
