Overview

Waterfox’s strongest case is combining configurable desktop blocking with controls for private browsing and DNS. It blocks ads, trackers, pop-ups and overlays by default, and filter lists and site exceptions can be adjusted when broad blocking gets in the way. The scope matters: the built-in blocking is described for desktop, so do not assume the same protection across every platform.

Private tabs use a separate container, and Waterfox clears their site data when the last private tab closes. DNS lookups are encrypted and routed through an Oblivious HTTP relay, which separates the user's identity from the query. The default arrangement uses a Fastly-operated relay and Cloudflare-operated resolver; users can change or disable it. These controls offer meaningful privacy choices, though users who prefer not to rely on those providers should change the default or turn the feature off.

Key features

Extension compatibility and tabs

Waterfox uses Gecko and supports Firefox WebExtensions, making it a plausible fit for teams already using Firefox-compatible add-ons. Chrome-only extensions do not transfer automatically, a material migration cost for stacks built around them. Tree tabs organize pages beneath the page that opened them; users can collapse a branch or move it as a unit, which is useful for research or work that fans out across related pages.

Privacy, updates and sync

Waterfox says telemetry, health reports and crash reports are disabled and locked off at build time. Mozilla security fixes are incorporated into regular updates following the Firefox ESR model. Sync is disabled until a user signs in with a Mozilla account; synced data is end-to-end encrypted. That is a clear tradeoff: teams get encrypted cross-device sync, but it is not an account-free feature.

Search and support

Waterfox Private Search offers unlimited web, image, video and news searches and can be set as the browser’s default search engine. It is a separate paid service rather than a browser requirement. Help articles cover browsing, privacy and security, customization, troubleshooting and Android.

Pricing

The Waterfox browser is free and open source, with no premium tier or payment required. It is the straightforward choice for individuals and teams seeking a no-cost browser; there is no paid browser tier to buy for additional features.

Waterfox Private Search costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $5 a month, and includes unlimited private searches across web, image, video and news. A 3-day free trial gives search users a short evaluation window. The subscription is optional and separate from the free browser.

Platforms

Waterfox supports Android, browser extensions, Linux, macOS and Windows. That mix can suit teams with desktop and Android users, but the stated built-in blocking applies to desktop, and platform coverage alone does not establish identical features on each device.

Who it's for

Waterfox is best for privacy-conscious users who want configurable desktop blocking, private tabs, encrypted DNS and tree-style tab organization without paying for the browser. It is also a reasonable candidate for teams standardizing on Firefox WebExtensions. It is a weaker fit when Chrome-only extensions are essential or when Mozilla-account sign-in is unacceptable for sync.

Pros and cons

Pros: Desktop ad, tracker, pop-up and overlay blocking can be tuned with filter lists and site exceptions, balancing broad protection with site compatibility.
Pros: Private tabs clear their site data at closure of the last tab, and encrypted DNS uses an identity-separating relay.
Pros: Tree tabs allow related pages to be collapsed or moved together, while the browser itself remains free and open source.
Cons: Chrome-only extensions do not transfer automatically, creating friction for users leaving Chrome-based browsers.
Cons: Sync requires a Mozilla account sign-in, even though synced data is end-to-end encrypted.
Cons: The default DNS setup depends on a Fastly-operated relay and Cloudflare-operated resolver unless users change or disable it.

Alternatives

Choose Brave Browser if you want a free browser with ad and tracker blocking and need its broader platform range, including iOS; it also offers a paid Brave Origin plan at 59.99 USD per on.

Tor Browser is another free, open-source option. Consider Mullvad Browser if its free, open-source offering for Linux, macOS and Windows better fits your desktop deployment. IronFox is an Android-only free, open-source alternative, with Android 5 or newer and 512 MB of free disk space required.

LibreWolf is a free, community-driven open-source browser for Linux, macOS and Windows. SnowHaze may suit users looking for its free iOS privacy browser with tracker and ad blocking, fingerprinting protection and Tor integration. Nav0 is a free, open-source desktop browser for macOS, Windows and Linux. DuckDuckGo Browser is a free option for users seeking DuckDuckGo private browsing and search protections across Android, iOS, macOS and Windows.

For a broader comparison, browse Privacy browsers or Web browsers.

Verdict

Choose Waterfox if a free Gecko browser with configurable desktop blocking, encrypted DNS and tree tabs fits your extension stack. Look elsewhere if Chrome-only add-ons are central or you need sync without a Mozilla account; for everyone else, the combination of adjustable privacy controls and no-cost browser use makes it a credible daily option.
