Overview

Mod Organizer 2 is a free, open-source mod manager for Windows PC games, with a particular focus on Bethesda titles. It is best suited to players who experiment with different mod setups and want to keep them separate. Its virtualized approach and broad supported-game scope are compelling, but Windows Store and Gamepass editions are a firm exclusion.

Key features

Profiles and virtual deployment

Profiles let players maintain distinct mod configurations, while virtualization manages mods without deploying them directly into game files. That is useful for experimentation and for keeping setups separate. MO2 also supports mod collections of arbitrary size, so there is no stated collection-size ceiling. Conflict detection helps users account for interactions among installed mods.

Game detection and installation

The basic games plugin can detect installations from Steam, GOG, Origin, Epic Games or Legendary, and EA Desktop. Its archive data checker can inspect and fix layouts for automatic installation, reducing the manual work involved when mod packages are arranged inconsistently. Recent releases also added BSA archive preview when the relevant plugin supports it.

MO2 supports 64-bit games such as Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4, as well as the 32-bit titles supported by the original Mod Organizer. The project describes its virtualized management as intended for Bethesda games, so players should confirm support for a particular title before committing to it.

Open development and setup

The project is community-maintained and open to contributions, with GitHub and Discord used for issue reports, bug investigation, development builds, suggestions, and translation work. That gives technically engaged users a route to participate, but the project remains unfinished and has many issues. Documentation is sparse; the project points to the Mod Organizer 1 wiki for general guidance and cautions that differences may apply.

Downloads are available through GitHub Releases and Nexus Mods. The installer is generally the easier route and can also create a portable installation. Build instructions are provided through the mob project, which downloads the multiple repositories MO2 requires.

Pricing

MO2 is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. The free plan is 0.00 USD per free and has no stated collection-size cap. There is no free trial because the product is already free; no paid tier, seat allowance, or billing term is stated.

Platforms

MO2 runs on Windows. Version 2.5.0 requires Windows 10 1809 or newer, or Windows 11. Windows Store and Gamepass versions of otherwise supported games are incompatible with MO2’s virtual filesystem and cannot be supported. That restriction rules it out for players whose game access depends on those editions.

Who it's for

MO2 fits Windows players who regularly experiment with supported game mods, value separate profiles, and want virtual deployment rather than direct changes to game files. Its open development model may also appeal to contributors who want to report issues, help test builds, or work on translations. It is a poor fit for Windows Store or Gamepass players, and its sparse documentation and unfinished status may frustrate users who want a fully polished, thoroughly documented tool.

Pros and cons

Pros

Virtual deployment and profiles: Keeps mod configurations distinct without directly deploying mods into game files.
Flexible collection scale: Supports collections of arbitrary size, with no stated size ceiling.
Useful install workflow: Launcher detection and archive-layout checking can simplify finding games and installing mods.
Open-source community project: Users can report issues and contribute through GitHub and Discord.

Cons

Windows only: It does not serve players managing mods from other operating systems.
Store edition incompatibility: Windows Store and Gamepass copies of supported games do not work with its virtual filesystem.
Unfinished project and sparse documentation: Users may need to work through issues and rely on guidance written for the earlier Mod Organizer.
Game scope needs checking: The project emphasizes Bethesda games, so support should be confirmed for other PC titles.

Alternatives

Vortex is another free, open-source Windows mod manager to consider if you want an alternative from Nexus Mods. For Minecraft mods and modpacks with web catalog access, CurseForge offers a free web option. Modrinth is a freemium choice with API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows platforms if your stack extends beyond Windows. Linux users can consider the free, open-source Limo or Corkscrew, which supports Linux and macOS. FlairX Mod Manager is another free Windows option. For HumanitZ specifically, HumanitZ Mod Manager is a portable desktop app. Alternative Mod Launcher is a free Windows option that requires XCOM 2 (WotC) or XCOM Chimera Squad, Steam running, and .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later.

Verdict

Choose Mod Organizer 2 if you use a supported Windows game and want free, virtualized mod management with profiles and room for collections of any size. Its strongest case is a workflow built for mod experimentation; look elsewhere if you rely on Windows Store or Gamepass editions, need another operating system, or prioritize complete documentation and a finished project.
