Overview

Mode brings ad hoc analysis, advanced analytics, and self-serve reporting into one workflow. Analysts can work in SQL and connected Python or R notebooks, then share results with business colleagues through reports and dashboards. That makes it more than a query interface: the analysis can carry its visual explanation and narrative with it.

The warehouse focus is a meaningful boundary. Mode connects to most major data warehouses, but does not build connectors to SaaS tools. Teams whose data work depends on direct connections to SaaS applications may need another foundation.

Key features

Analysis, reports, and dashboards

Reports combine explorable charts, output cells, and narrative writeups, so readers can inspect results alongside an explanation of the analysis. Visual Explorer supports browser-based exploration of more than 100,000 data points. Interactive dashboards add drag-and-drop explorations, visualizations, custom themes, and scheduled runs. Together with scheduled queries and team query sharing, these features support repeatable reporting rather than one-off query delivery.

The SQL editor and connected Python and R notebooks give analysts both query and code-based ways to work. AI query assistance is also included among Mode’s capabilities, though teams should still assess the plan limits against their expected query sizes and usage.

Internal data tools and integrations

Teams can build internal data tools using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, APIs, parameters, and embedded reports. This offers more room to shape a workflow than a dashboard alone, but it also makes Mode a better fit for teams prepared to build and maintain an internal tool.

Integrations include dbt freshness, GitHub, Excel workbooks, Google Sheets, semantic layers, Slack, local file uploads, and webhooks. These complement its warehouse connections, but do not change the stated limitation around building SaaS connectors.

Security and deployment

Mode is cloud-deployed. It states that data in transit is encrypted with TLS 1.2 or higher and data at rest with AES-256. Those protections are relevant to teams evaluating a hosted analytics workflow, alongside their own security requirements.

Pricing

Mode uses a freemium model with a free plan, but plan prices are custom pricing. The caps and minimums make the plan choice consequential even before a team compares quotes.

Studio: Up to 3 users, with queries limited to 10 MB each. This is the entry point for a small team evaluating warehouse analysis and reporting, but the per-query cap may constrain larger workloads.
Pro: 250 GB per month and 5 GB per query, with a minimum of 3 users and standard support. The higher query allowance suits teams whose analyses exceed Studio’s small cap; the monthly quota and seat minimum still need to match expected usage and team size.
Enterprise: Minimum 50 users and premium support. This tier is aimed at larger organizations that need enterprise-level support, but its substantial user minimum makes it a poor fit for smaller teams.

Custom pricing means teams should compare the quote with the relevant user threshold and usage limits, rather than treating the free plan as a proxy for the cost of a production rollout.

Platforms

Mode is available on the web and through an API. Its cloud deployment keeps the product centered on a hosted workflow rather than self-hosting.

Who it's for

Mode is best suited to data teams that use a major warehouse and need to move from analyst-led SQL or notebook work to reports business users can explore. It is also a credible choice when recurring dashboards or internal data tools are part of the same workflow. It is less compelling for teams that need direct SaaS connectors, have query needs beyond a plan’s caps, or cannot meet the relevant user minimum.

Pros and cons

Pro: SQL, connected Python and R notebooks, reports, and dashboards sit in one analytics workflow, helping teams share analysis without separating it from its explanation.
Pro: Internal data tools can use web technologies, APIs, parameters, and embedded reports, supporting more tailored internal workflows than dashboards alone.
Pro: Browser-based visual exploration supports more than 100,000 data points, while scheduled runs and query sharing support recurring team work.
Con: Mode does not build SaaS connectors, so teams focused on SaaS application data may need another tool or data path.
Con: Studio’s 10 MB/query cap is restrictive for large analyses, while Pro’s 250 GB/month quota and minimum of 3 users require careful sizing.
Con: Enterprise starts at 50 users, ruling it out for many smaller organizations even if premium support is attractive.

Alternatives

For narrower SQL-query workflows or different deployment and licensing priorities, consider SQL Query Tools or Business Intelligence Tools.

DBeaver is a freemium, open-source option for personal database projects, with broad platform support including self-hosting.
Apache Drill is a free, open-source choice for downloadable embedded or cluster deployments.
Apache Hue is a free, open-source alternative for teams seeking a self-hosted installation.
Hex is a freemium web-based alternative with a free Community plan that includes data-source connections, all cell types, and small compute.
MotherDuck is a freemium web and API option whose free Lite plan is centered on Pulse compute, with limits on active users, service accounts, storage, and monthly compute hours.
Outerbase Studio is a free, open-source database GUI with self-hosted and broad desktop and mobile platform support.
BigQuery Data Clean Rooms is a free option for contributors publishing data to a clean room and subscribers querying clean-room data.
Querybook is a free, self-hosted web alternative.

Verdict

Choose Mode if your team already works with a major data warehouse and wants SQL, notebooks, explorable reporting, dashboards, and custom internal tools in one cloud platform. Its main advantage is connecting analysis to business-facing reporting; its main reason to look elsewhere is the combination of no built SaaS connectors and plan limits that can constrain query size or team scale.
