Overview

Modern Campus CMS is a web content management system built exclusively for higher education. It suits institutions that need publishing workflows, accessibility checks, and integrations with campus identity systems. Its higher-ed focus is a strength, but institutions seeking a new self-hosted deployment should look elsewhere: Modern Campus no longer sells Self-Host.

Key features

Workflow management and pre-publication health checks give teams a way to review content before it reaches institution websites. Custom roles and approval workflows support shared publishing responsibilities, while WYSIWYG editing, drag-and-drop tools, and Layout Builder let non-technical users create and manage pages without making every change a developer task.

Accessibility checks against WCAG 2.2 and SEO tools address two recurring needs in institutional publishing. Marketing teams can create on-brand pages and search-optimized blog posts. An AI feature added in August 2026 can check and improve page titles and descriptions, but it requires the institution to supply an OpenAI API key.

More than 500 APIs, custom content types, a media library, and purchasable modules provide room to extend the CMS. Modules include Calendar, Emergency Alerts, Forms, Insights, Personalization Advanced, and Website Search. Personalization can adapt dynamic content to visitor behavior, demographics, and interests; institutions can import data from systems such as Slate, Salesforce, and Ellucian by CSV, including automated SFTP uploads. That breadth can support complex campus needs, though modules are additional purchases.

Authentication includes LDAP, CAS, and Shibboleth, as well as documented SAML 2.0 SSO with several validated identity providers. For hosted customers, Modern Campus Hosting includes DDoS protection, a web application firewall, and regular operating system patches. The CMS is cloud-based and can publish to institution production servers.

Pricing

Modern Campus is paid software with pricing on request. Institutions should contact the vendor for a quote; there is no published plan comparison or self-serve price to use for budgeting. Modules are available for purchase, so teams should account for potential module costs when evaluating the scope they need.

The main deployment constraint is clear: Modern Campus no longer sells Self-Host, although it continues to support existing Self-Host customers. New buyers considering self-managed infrastructure should not treat that legacy support as an available purchase option.

Platforms

The CMS runs in a web browser, with support for current Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Chrome, and macOS Safari. Listed platforms also include Android, iOS, API, and self-hosted. The self-hosted option applies to existing customers only; the current offering is cloud-based, with publishing to institution production servers supported.

Who it's for

Modern Campus is best suited to colleges and universities coordinating publishing across teams, especially where approval workflows, accessibility review, campus authentication, and tailored content matter. Its higher-education focus and integration options are less compelling for organizations outside that audience. Teams that require a newly purchased self-hosted CMS should rule it out.

Pros and cons

Pro: Pre-publication workflows, health checks, and custom roles help institutions govern multi-team publishing.
Pro: WCAG 2.2 checks, SEO tools, and the newer title-and-description assistant support accessibility and search-focused content work.
Pro: LDAP, CAS, Shibboleth, and SAML 2.0 SSO options suit institutions with established identity infrastructure.
Pro: APIs, modules, and personalization data imports give technical teams ways to extend the CMS around campus systems.
Con: New customers cannot buy Self-Host, limiting deployment choice for institutions that require self-managed CMS hosting.
Con: Pricing is on request and modules cost extra, so buyers need a vendor quote to assess the full budget.
Con: The AI content assistance depends on an institution-provided OpenAI API key, adding a prerequisite for teams that want to use it.

Alternatives

For student-facing engagement rather than a higher-education CMS, consider InScribe or Mainstay. InScribe offers an institutional plan with pricing discussed with its team and supports Android, iOS, API, and web. Mainstay offers a customized plan by consultation and supports API and web. Mongoose is another paid option with API and web platforms.

Institutions seeking a broader student-success platform may consider EAB Navigate360, whose enterprise license covers all staff and students, with pricing based on enrollment and technology scope rather than per-user or per-office fees. Early Alert and ConexED Retain are also paid alternatives for readers comparing institutional software.

For narrower needs, Rubric has a free plan with a 12-month transaction volume below $200. GivePulse offers a free Basic Free plan for one admin, no subgroups, and five custom fields, as well as a Give Joy plan at 20.00 USD per month when billed annually. These are alternatives to evaluate when their plan scope fits better than a full CMS.

Verdict

Modern Campus CMS is a strong fit for higher-education teams that need governed web publishing, campus authentication, and extensible tools for tailored content. Its workflow and accessibility capabilities make it more than a page editor, but custom pricing and paid modules require careful scoping. Choose it for a cloud-based institutional CMS; look elsewhere if new self-hosted deployment is a requirement.
