Overview

Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Amsterdam, Mollie says it serves more than 250,000 businesses across Europe. Its products span online payments, checkout, payment links, in-person payments, recurring payments, invoicing, business accounts, capital, outbound payments, and acceptance and risk.

This is a business service, not a personal payments app: Mollie's payment services are for organizations acting in a business capacity, rather than personal, family, or household users. Mollie identifies ecommerce, franchises, marketplaces, and SaaS as customer categories.

Key features

Online and in-person acceptance

Mollie supports cards and local payment methods, recurring payments, and marketplace payments. Its 28 supported currencies and payouts to 31 countries make it relevant to businesses selling across borders, though the stated currency and country counts alone do not establish that every method works in every market. Payouts can arrive every business day, weekly on a selected business day, or monthly on the first business day. Supported payout currencies include EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, CZK, DKK, HUF, NOK, PLN, SEK, CHF, and USD, with up to 11 additional currencies.

For face-to-face sales, businesses can accept payments through the web app or API, dedicated terminals, or the Mollie Tap app. Tap to Pay works on iPhone and Android; the app can turn a phone, tablet, or kiosk into a contactless terminal. That gives merchants a way to start taking in-person payments without relying solely on dedicated hardware, while businesses needing a fixed or portable terminal can choose dedicated devices.

Developer and integration options

A customizable API, ready-made plugins, and client and server libraries for JavaScript, PHP, .NET, and Python give teams several routes to integrate payments. The directory includes Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Odoo, HubSpot, Chargebee, Jotform, QuickBooks, and Zapier. This is a practical fit for teams integrating into common commerce or business tools; teams with a less conventional stack should assess the API against their own requirements.

Security and support

Mollie states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 and PCI-DSS Level 1 compliant and has ISAE 3402 Type 2 audited operational controls. Mollie B.V. is licensed as an electronic money institution by the Dutch Central Bank, and Mollie UK Ltd is licensed by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. Support includes a help centre, customer support, and a partnerships team for platform integrations.

Pricing

Mollie's pricing model is paid, although its Pay as you go plan is 0.00 EUR per month (billed €0 per month) with no contract or commitment. That is not free payment processing: domestic consumer debit and credit cards cost 1.20%, other consumer cards 1.80%, American Express 2.10%, and commercial cards 2.90%. The plan allows one hardware terminal maximum, so merchants adding more terminals need another arrangement.

The Business accounts plan costs 9.00 EUR per month (billed €9/mo) and includes 12 months free, five accounts, unlimited incoming transfers, 100 free outgoing transfers per month, €0.20 per additional transfer, and five Mollie debit cards. It suits businesses looking for accounts and transfer capacity, but the monthly fee and outgoing-transfer allowance matter if payment acceptance is the main need.

Pro costs 20.00 EUR per month (billed €20 per month). Its card rates are domestic consumer debit and credit cards at 0.10 € + 0.85%, other consumer cards at 0.10 € + 1.50%, American Express at 0.10 € + 1.80%, and commercial cards at 0.10 € + 2.50%. One terminal license is included; each additional terminal costs €20/mo. The lower percentage rates may suit businesses processing enough card volume to justify the monthly fee, but the fixed per-transaction charge still applies.

For online payments, pricing is custom pricing, billed per transaction: Mastercard/Visa EEA consumer cards cost 1.80% + €0.25, EEA commercial cards 2.90% + €0.25, non-EEA cards 3.25% + €0.25, SEPA Direct Debit €0.35, and SEPA Bank Transfer €0.25. These charges make payment mix and average transaction size important to the total cost.

Hardware has separate one-time prices. The Tap terminal costs 95.00 EUR per once (billed €95) and accepts cards and wallets over 4G/Wi-Fi, with front-facing NFC and digital receipts by QR or email. The Fixed terminal costs 350.00 EUR per once (billed €350), connects by Ethernet, is vandal-proof, and is designed for kiosks and unattended setups; active terminals start at €20 per month. The Mobile terminal also costs 350.00 EUR per once (billed €350), is portable, and has an embedded receipt printer; active terminals likewise start at €20 per month. The purchase price is therefore not the full ongoing cost for fixed and mobile devices.

Platforms

Mollie supports Android, iOS, web, and API access. That combination covers mobile operations and custom integrations as well as browser-based workflows.

Who it's for

Mollie is a strong candidate for European and UK businesses that want one provider for online and in-person payments, payouts, recurring charges, and related money-management products. Ecommerce merchants can use plugins and payment methods, while marketplaces and SaaS businesses may value marketplace and recurring-payment support. Teams needing to accept personal payments, or whose primary requirement is a very specific fee structure, should look elsewhere or compare costs carefully.

Pros and cons

Broad payment coverage: Online, in-person, recurring, and marketplace payments support several business models within one platform.
Useful integration routes: Plugins, a customizable API, and libraries for four languages let teams choose between ready-made connections and custom work.
Flexible in-person acceptance: Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android can use existing devices, while terminal options serve dedicated setups.
Costs vary by plan and method: The zero-monthly-fee option still has transaction charges, and online card rates include a fixed fee that weighs more on smaller payments.
Hardware can add recurring expense: Fixed and Mobile terminals have one-time purchase prices plus a starting monthly charge per active terminal.

Alternatives

Choose Airwallex Payments if its freemium Explore plan better fits your needs; it offers online card and local payment acceptance, with processing fees applying. Consider Checkout.com if you qualify for its free payment processing for registered charities in countries where it operates, or need tailored pricing. Currencycloud is another option for teams seeking a custom-priced API and web service.

For hosted checkout, compare 2Checkout Hosted Checkout, whose 2Sell plan charges 3.50 USD per once (billed 3.5% + $0.35 per successful sale) and covers products, recurring billing, and a broad cart range. Paymentwall offers revenue-share merchant processing. Payoneer Checkout is another paid checkout option with bundled pricing. For US-dollar ACH debit, Stripe ACH Direct Debit charges 0.80 USD per once per successful transaction, capped at $5.00, with four-business-day settlement. Tazapay is an alternative with a Standard plan covering alternative payment methods, global cards, collection accounts, and payouts.

Verdict

Mollie is a sound choice for a business that wants online and in-person acceptance, developer integration options, and adjacent payment-management products under one provider. Its API, plugins, Tap app, and broad product range are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if your priority is a simpler fee structure, or if the transaction and terminal charges do not fit your sales mix.
