Overview

mpv supports a wide range of media formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types, including MKV and MP4. Network playback, 4K playback, and hardware acceleration make it capable beyond basic local-file playback. The trade-off is a sparse control experience: a small on-screen controller handles basics, but there is no full GUI for people who expect conventional browsing and playback controls.

Key features

Broad playback compatibility: Extensive format, codec, and subtitle support, along with network playback, reduces friction when playing varied media. Hardware decoding can use most platform APIs, and can be enabled on demand while the player is running.
Configurable video output: OpenGL, Vulkan, and D3D11 output support scaling, color management, frame timing, interpolation, and HDR. This makes mpv a stronger fit for viewers who value control over rendering than for those who only need basic playback.
Scripting and integration: User scripts can substantially extend the player, while its C API lets developers embed mpv in applications. These are meaningful advantages for customized workflows and software integration, but less relevant to someone seeking a ready-made media-library interface.

Pricing

mpv is free and open source. Its Free and open source plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the command-line player with broad media-format, codec, and subtitle support. There is no paid tier to unlock those core capabilities.

Platforms

mpv supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. The project’s installation guidance covers packages, Android, and source builds, though many binaries are unofficial third-party builds. For most source-build users, its helper scripts produce a static build with FFmpeg, libplacebo, and libass. Listed system baselines are Windows 10 1607 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, or a not-too-ancient Linux distribution, alongside a capable CPU and GPU.

Who it's for

Choose mpv if command-line operation, scripting, playback tuning, or embedding matter to your workflow. It is less suitable for users who want a full graphical player for everyday browsing and control. Teams should also account for its security posture: mpv is a desktop player, not designed for untrusted environments, and supports user scripts, subprocesses, and playback control through IPC. Only the latest stable release receives security updates; older releases are unsupported and unmaintained.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad format, codec, and subtitle support plus network playback, 4K, and hardware decoding covers varied playback needs.
Advanced output controls and extensive scripting offer room to tailor playback.
The C API supports embedding mpv into applications.
GPLv2 or later licensing is the default; builds configured with -Dgpl=false can use LGPLv2.1 or later.

Cons

No full GUI makes it a poor fit for users who expect conventional point-and-click media browsing.
Its support for scripts, subprocesses, and IPC makes it inappropriate for untrusted environments.
Security updates apply only to the most recent stable release, so deployments must keep current.

Alternatives

Consider VLC media player for a free option spanning Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. KMPlayer is a freemium alternative for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. For Apple platforms, Infuse has a free option and a 7-day trial of its Pro monthly plan at 1.99 USD per month, billed monthly, with additional video formats and high-resolution Dolby and DTS-HD audio. SMPlayer is a free, GPL-licensed choice for Linux, macOS, and Windows; MPlayer is another free GPLv2 option for those platforms. 5KPlayer is a free alternative for iOS, macOS, and Windows. MediaPortal is free and spans Android, iOS, web, and Windows. DivX Player offers a free tier for macOS and Windows with playback up to 4K, playlists and media-library features, and DLNA casting—useful if those library and casting features matter more than mpv’s command-line orientation. Verdict

mpv is a strong choice for builders and technically confident viewers who want broad playback support, tunable video output, scripting, or an embeddable C API without a license cost. Its principal drawback is the absence of a full GUI; teams must also keep the latest stable release current and avoid using it in untrusted environments. Look elsewhere if a conventional graphical player is central to the job.
