Overview

StackEdit brings Markdown editing, preview, and document sharing together in a web app that can also work offline. Markdown syntax highlighting and formatting controls serve both source-first writers and those who prefer buttons; synchronized scrolling keeps the live preview aligned with the text being edited.

Beyond prose, it handles LaTeX mathematics, sequence diagrams, flow charts, ABC musical notation, and emoji markup. Support for Markdown Extra, GitHub Flavored Markdown, and CommonMark, with configurable features, is useful when documents need to follow different conventions. That breadth makes it a stronger fit for technical and structured writing than a bare text editor.

Key features

Editing and output

Local file support and offline writing make StackEdit useful when a connection is unreliable or a document needs to stay in a browser-centered workflow. Export formats include Markdown, HTML, and PDF. Publishing can send posts to Blogger, WordPress, and Zendesk in Markdown or HTML, with Handlebars templates available to format output. Those options are practical for writers using those destinations, but do not make StackEdit a universal publishing layer.

Collaboration and sync

Shared workspaces, inline comments, and embedded discussions support review in the document itself. When collaborators edit the same file simultaneously, StackEdit merges their changes, which helps teams work together without treating a shared draft as a succession of handoffs. Sync connections to Google Drive, Dropbox, and GitHub provide familiar destinations for files; publishing and file sync serve different needs, and the integrations should be judged against the services a team already relies on.

Pricing

The StackEdit plan is 0.00 USD per free. StackEdit is open source under the Apache License, and the maker’s pages state no paid plans or usage limits. That makes it a straightforward option for individuals and teams seeking a free editor; the available pricing model does not provide a paid tier to evaluate for expanded service.

Platforms

StackEdit is available on the web, with supported platforms also including a Chrome extension and self-hosted use. Offline writing and local file support add flexibility within that browser-oriented approach, but readers specifically seeking a native desktop app for Linux, macOS, or Windows should consider desktop alternatives.

Who it's for

StackEdit fits Markdown writers who want browser access, offline drafting, and a choice of sync or publishing connections. It is especially relevant to collaborators who benefit from shared workspaces, merged edits, and in-file discussion, and to technical writers using math, diagrams, or musical notation. It is a weaker fit when a team depends on publishing destinations beyond Blogger, WordPress, and Zendesk, or insists on a native desktop platform.

Pros and cons

Pro: Offline writing, local files, and cloud sync make it adaptable to more than connected, cloud-only drafting.
Pro: Shared workspaces, edit merging, inline comments, and discussions give collaborators several ways to review and revise together.
Pro: Multiple Markdown flavors and support for math, diagrams, scores, and emoji cover specialized documents as well as prose.
Con: Publishing targets are limited to Blogger, WordPress, and Zendesk, so teams using other destinations may need another workflow.
Con: Its platform offering centers on the web rather than native desktop apps, which may not suit writers who require one.

Alternatives

For other browser-based choices, Markdown editors and note-taking apps provide broader lists to compare. Choose HackMD instead if a web editor with a free plan capped at three teammates, three invitees, three custom templates, and 20 GitHub pushes per month fits the team. Dillinger is another web-based free option with no signup or usage limits. For a desktop app, PanWriter is free and open source for Linux, macOS, and Windows; MarkText is free, open source, and needs no account or subscription on those platforms. Ghostwriter and Zettlr are also free desktop options for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Muesli is free and open source under AGPL-3.0, with web, self-hosted, API, and desktop platforms. Markra offers core features free across web and desktop, while its AI features require a configured provider.

Verdict

Choose StackEdit if you want a free, open-source Markdown editor that combines offline writing, collaborative review, and useful document-specific features in a browser-centered workflow. Its strongest case is the balance of editing, collaboration, and sync without a stated usage cap. Look elsewhere if you need native desktop apps or publishing connections beyond its three named destinations.
