Overview

Readers choose a protagonist and one of eight story worlds, then guide each new chapter through a suggested path or a custom direction. Chapters run about 800 words, a format geared toward serialized, participatory reading rather than drafting a long, fixed manuscript. The three suggested paths keep the next decision close at hand; custom directions give readers more control when those choices miss the mark.

Character memory reaches back thirty chapters and can retain names, wounds, and promises. That supports continuity across branches and gives returning readers a reason to build on earlier decisions. Chapters are cached for offline reading, a useful fit for reading without a connection. AI-generated covers and hero portraits provide visual identity, and a completed chapter can be turned into three pages of panel art.

Story text comes from DeepSeek, while Volcengine/Seedream generates covers, character images, and chapter art. TaleAI supports English, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Thai, with both Chinese variants represented in the app listing.

Key features

Branching chapters: Each new page offers three paths, or readers can write their own direction. This makes TaleAI suited to readers who want to influence a story without having to plan every turn themselves.
Persistent character details: Recall spanning thirty chapters can carry names, wounds, and promises forward. That is a meaningful strength for longer stories; readers looking for a static, author-controlled narrative may prefer a conventional book.
Offline reading and narration: Cached chapters remain readable offline. Free on-device narration supports sentence tapping, 0.75–2x speed, sleep timers, and playback with the screen locked. Plus and Pro add cloud AI narration, so readers who need that option must pay.
Story art: Generated covers and hero portraits add visuals, while completed chapters can become three pages of panel art. Pro adds selfie portraits and 14 art styles, making it the plan for readers who want more control over visual presentation.
Exports: PDF and EPUB exports are watermarked on Free and unwatermarked on Plus and Pro. The paid export is the better fit for readers who want a clean copy to keep or share.

Pricing

TaleAI is freemium, with paid plans starting at 9.99 USD per month. Plans are billed through the App Store.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	Two stories, up to 15 chapters each, 90 credits, watermarked PDF/EPUB, and on-device narration.
Credit top-up	0.99 USD per once	Credits for optional AI art and cloud narration; top-ups never expire.
Plus monthly	9.99 USD per month	Unlimited stories and chapters, 1,000 credits per month, cloud sync, unwatermarked PDF/EPUB, and cloud AI narration.
Plus yearly	69.99 USD per year	The same Plus features and monthly credit allowance as Plus monthly.
Pro monthly	19.99 USD per month	Everything in Plus, 200 Deep Mode chapters per month, selfie portraits, 14 art styles, priority generation, and 2,000 credits per month.
Pro yearly	149.99 USD per year	The same Pro features and monthly credit allowance as Pro monthly.

Free is enough to explore the format, but the two-story and 15-chapter-per-story ceilings constrain anyone who wants to keep several plots going. Its 90 credits and watermarked exports also make it a limited fit for readers who rely on generated extras or want clean files. Plus removes the story and chapter caps and adds sync and unwatermarked exports; its 1,000 monthly credits should suit readers who do not need Pro’s art options or Deep Mode allowance. Pro doubles the monthly credits and adds those generation features, so it is aimed at readers who make visual extras or want more elaborate chapters. Yearly billing costs less than paying for twelve months at the corresponding monthly rate: 69.99 USD versus 119.88 USD for Plus, and 149.99 USD versus 239.88 USD for Pro. The credit top-up is a one-time purchase and does not replace the story limits of Free.

Platforms

TaleAI is available on iOS and macOS. The App Store listing supports iPhone and iPad; Mac compatibility requires macOS 12.0 or later and an Apple M1 chip or later. Its mobile focus fits readers who want stories on a phone or tablet, while teams choosing a web-based writing tool should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

TaleAI is best for individual readers who enjoy directing a serialized story, want character details to carry across chapters, and value offline access or narrated reading. Its eight worlds and six named story languages give readers a range of starting points, while its app-based availability makes it less suitable for teams seeking a browser-based shared writing workspace. It is intended for users aged 12 and older, or the minimum age required in their jurisdiction.

Pros and cons

Pro: Thirty-chapter character recall can preserve story details across a long run, rather than treating each branch as a reset.
Pro: Offline chapter caching and feature-rich on-device narration make it useful for readers who want to listen or read away from a connection.
Pro: PDF and EPUB exports provide a way to keep finished stories outside the app, with unwatermarked files on paid plans.
Con: Free is capped at two stories and 15 chapters each, so sustained reading requires a paid plan.
Con: Cloud AI narration is paid-only, and Pro is required for Deep Mode chapters, selfie portraits, and the 14 art styles.
Con: Mac use requires an M1-or-later Apple chip and macOS 12.0 or later, limiting compatibility with older Macs.

Alternatives

AI Story Generators is a useful starting point for comparing more tools in the category.

DreamGen is worth considering for web access and a free tier that tries all models and features; its Starter plan costs 7.83 USD per month and includes a 5,000-token context window and 375 monthly credits.
Talefy is an option for readers who want Android or web access in addition to iOS and macOS, and offers a free trial valid for three days after registration.
FireQuill may suit writers who prefer a web tool with a free tier of two projects and no AI, rather than AI-generated branching chapters.
Narratomi is a web alternative with a free tier that includes two projects, 50 monthly AI credits for mini models, 0.5 GB of storage, and 1,000 monthly plays.
OpenRP is another freemium alternative.
PLOT is an option for readers who want Android or web access alongside iOS.
Pominis offers web access and 30 daily credits, up to 300 per month, on its free tier.
INKO.RUN is a web-based option with free core creation and play, while AI generation and advanced capabilities use credits.

Verdict

Choose TaleAI if you want interactive fiction built around persistent character details, offline reading, and narration on iOS or compatible Macs. Its Free plan gives a bounded way to try the experience, while Plus is the sensible step for readers who outgrow the caps and Pro is for those who want Deep Mode and expanded art tools. Look elsewhere if you need a web-based workspace, broader device coverage, or a free plan without a two-story ceiling.
