Overview

NodeBB brings discussion publishing, live chat, groups and moderation together. Members can write topics and replies in a WYSIWYG editor or Markdown, follow tags, and receive notifications for follows, likes and subscribed topics. Groups have activity feeds, making the platform useful for communities organized around shared interests as well as support discussions.

Administrators can create unlimited administrator and moderator accounts and set permissions for each. A public Read API and RESTful Write API give teams routes to integrate NodeBB with other software. The control panel offers more than 500 plugins and themes, a substantial customization surface, though third-party extensions deserve scrutiny: they may collect data beyond NodeBB's DPA and are excluded from its bug bounty program.

Key features

Publishing and engagement: Visual and Markdown editors serve different posting preferences, while real-time chat and notifications support ongoing conversation rather than one-way publishing.
Organization: Groups with activity feeds and followed tags help members navigate community activity and topics.
Administration and spam controls: Unlimited administrator and moderator accounts with configurable permissions suit teams that need to distribute oversight. Akismet, StopForumSpam and Project Honeypot integrations add spam-prevention options.
Integration and extension: Read and Write APIs, plus a large plugin and theme catalog, make NodeBB adaptable to an existing stack. Teams should weigh that flexibility against the additional data and security review required for third-party extensions.
Search: Bundled full-text search uses NodeBB's database engine. Solr or Elasticsearch requires third-party plugins, so teams with a firm dependency on either should factor in plugin selection and maintenance.
Privacy and security: Registration presents data and rights information and requires affirmative consent. NodeBB runs a bug bounty program, but testing is restricted to try.nodebb.org; third-party plugins are outside its scope.

Pricing

NodeBB offers free self-hosted software under GPLv3 and paid hosting from 20.00 USD per month. Paid hosting includes SSL, custom plugins, a custom domain, unlimited staff users and priority support at every listed tier; the main differences are pageview allowance, storage and backup frequency.

Plan	Price and allowance	Best fit
Self-hosted	0.00 USD per free; free to download and install under GPLv3	Teams able to run their own server and manage deployment.
Starter	20.00 USD per month; 50,000 pageviews, 5gb storage, weekly backups	Smaller hosted communities that can work within the lowest traffic and storage caps.
Hamlet	100.00 USD per month; 500,000 pageviews, 20gb storage, daily backups	Communities needing a larger allowance and daily backups.
Village	250.00 USD per month; 2,000,000 pageviews, 100gb storage, daily backups	Higher-traffic communities requiring more storage headroom.
City	750.00 USD per month; 10,000,000 pageviews, 300gb storage, daily backups	Communities with the largest listed hosting allowance.
Enterprise Solutions	Custom pricing	Organizations seeking custom integrations or feature development, theme customization, SSO, migration, or premium hosting and self-hosting options.

All four paid tiers include unlimited staff users, so their published limits are on pageviews and storage rather than staff seats. Starter's weekly backups are the notable hosting compromise; the higher tiers include daily backups. NodeBB offers a 14-day trial, and paid hosting plans include priority support. Self-hosting removes the hosting fee but leaves server deployment to the organization; installation guidance covers Linux, macOS, Windows and cloud options including Docker.

Platforms

NodeBB supports web, Linux, macOS, Windows, self-hosting and API access. This range gives teams options to deploy across common server environments or integrate the service programmatically.

Who it's for

NodeBB is a strong fit for organizations that want a branded discussion community or product-support forum, need flexible roles and permissions, and have the capacity to manage either their own deployment or an extension ecosystem. Its API access and plugin catalog are useful for teams fitting a community into an existing software stack. It is less suitable for teams that require built-in Solr or Elasticsearch search, or that cannot take responsibility for reviewing third-party plugins' data handling and security.

Pros and cons

Pro: Self-hosting is free under GPLv3, giving technically capable teams a no-hosting-fee route and deployment control.
Pro: Unlimited administrator and moderator accounts with configurable permissions avoid a staff-seat ceiling in the stated plans.
Pro: APIs and more than 500 plugins and themes provide meaningful integration and customization options.
Con: Solr and Elasticsearch depend on third-party plugins rather than the bundled search engine.
Con: Third-party plugins and themes can collect data outside NodeBB's DPA and are excluded from the bug bounty program, adding review work for privacy-conscious teams.
Con: Starter caps hosting at 50,000 pageviews and 5gb storage and provides weekly rather than daily backups.

Circle may suit teams seeking a paid service with mobile apps; its Professional plan costs 89.00 USD per month on annual billing and limits the plan to 3 admins, 10 moderators and 20 spaces, with a 2% transaction fee.
Discourse is worth considering for teams prioritizing an open-source, self-hosted discussion platform; its free plan includes unlimited members, 2 staff seats and 500k monthly page views.

Verdict

Choose NodeBB if your team wants a customizable discussion platform with APIs, moderation and a genuine self-hosted path, and can own deployment or plugin review. Its strongest case is the combination of community controls and extension options without a staff-seat cap on paid hosting. Look elsewhere if Solr or Elasticsearch must work without third-party plugins, or if your team needs a tightly controlled extension and data perimeter with less maintenance overhead.
