Overview

Each installation serves one independent community, rather than giving an operator a shared service for running multiple communities. That is a natural fit for organizations building a dedicated space for their members, but not for teams that need centralized multi-community management. Instances can discover one another through a global directory and relay through NAT using nodyx-relay while remaining separate communities.

Nodyx is open source under AGPL-3.0 and described as free forever, without feature gating or an enterprise tier. The zero software price does not remove the need to provide and maintain a server.

Key features

Forums, chat and voice

Forum functions span categories, threads, rich editing, polls, pinned threads, reactions, thanks and tags. Real-time chat, WebRTC voice channels and screen sharing broaden it into a shared space for asynchronous and live interaction. That combination can reduce the need to assemble separate community tools, though groups seeking only a conventional forum may not need the full scope.

Customization and messaging

The Grid Builder provides resizable columns, live previews and theme editing, plus ZIP-uploaded widgets that run in Shadow DOM. This gives community operators options to shape the homepage and add widgets. The maker says direct messages use ECDH P-256, AES-256-GCM and an ESY layer for end-to-end encryption.

Connections and security

RSS, webhooks, iCal sync and OAuth are marked as coming in v2.2, so they should not be treated as current integration capabilities. The documented project status includes TOTP and Signet two-factor authentication and a honeypot suite, useful security measures for operators to consider alongside their own server practices.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the full AGPL-3.0 platform with no feature gating. There are no cheaper tiers that trade away features, nor an enterprise tier; Nodyx is the fit for teams seeking the full product without a software subscription. The cost decision instead centers on providing a server and handling its operation.

Platforms

Nodyx supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. Deployment options include Docker, a Windows Server PowerShell installer and manual installation on Linux, Mac or Windows. The manual route requires Node.js 22+, PostgreSQL 16+ and Redis 7+; the quick-start installer detects the operating system and installs Node, PostgreSQL, Redis, Caddy and PM2. There are no mobile apps, so communities prioritizing dedicated iOS or Android apps should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

Nodyx suits communities with a server they control and the capacity to deploy and maintain software, especially those wanting forums, chat and voice in one independent community. It is less suitable for teams that want a managed multi-community service, dedicated mobile apps or a platform that avoids server administration.

Pros and cons

Pro: The AGPL-3.0 Free plan includes the full platform without feature gates, making all documented core functions available without a software subscription.
Pro: Forums, real-time chat, WebRTC voice and screen sharing combine several community modes in one installation.
Pro: Docker, a Windows Server installer and manual setup offer multiple deployment paths across common server environments.
Con: Operators must supply and run a server, and manual deployment depends on Node.js, PostgreSQL and Redis.
Con: One installation serves one community, which rules it out for centralized multi-community operation.
Con: No mobile apps are offered, and the named external connections are marked as coming in v2.2.

Alternatives

HumHub is worth considering for teams wanting a self-hosted community platform with Android and iOS support; its Community Edition is open source under AGPLv3 and includes Module Marketplace access and community support.

NodeBB offers a freemium route with a free trial and a Starter plan at 20.00 USD per month, including 50,000 pageviews, 5gb storage and unlimited staff users. Choose it when that hosted-style monthly plan and its stated capacity suit better than Nodyx's full free self-hosted platform.

Mobilize may suit teams looking for a limited starter account with five team members and a small allowance for events or online actions.

Open Social is an alternative for teams implementing a free open-source core in their own Drupal projects.

4chan is another option for readers comparing community platforms.

Flarum is a free, self-hosted alternative for readers seeking a different forum platform.

Invision Community is a paid alternative with creator plans and a free trial.

Circle is a paid option for teams preferring a platform with mobile apps; its Professional plan is 89.00 USD per month on annual billing and includes unlimited members, three admins, ten moderators and 20 spaces.

Verdict

Choose Nodyx if your community wants a single self-governed home for forums, chat and voice, and you can take responsibility for its server. The full platform at no software charge is its strongest reason to choose it; look elsewhere if you need managed multi-community operation, mobile apps or less deployment work.
