Overview

reNamerX is a free desktop utility for applying repeatable naming rules to batches of files. It suits people who want a cross-platform renamer with safeguards before and after changes, rather than a tool for renaming directories. The rule set reaches beyond simple text edits, though Windows users should check the system requirements before installing.

Key features

Text operations, case transformation and sequential numbering cover common cleanup jobs. Regular expressions, metadata such as creation date and size, and date-and-time insertion support more tailored naming schemes. Reusable presets are useful when the same pattern recurs; the trade-off is that this is a rule-driven desktop workflow, not a folder-renaming tool.

A live preview shows proposed names before they are applied, and batch operations can be undone with Ctrl+Z; redo is also supported. Those controls reduce the risk of applying a mistaken rule across hundreds of files. Browse Files selects individual items, while Browse Folder selects files in a directory, but reNamerX does not rename folders themselves.

The clean interface offers dark and cyberpunk themes. That gives users a choice of presentation without changing the underlying capabilities.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the MIT-licensed desktop application. There are no paid tiers to weigh against it, and the provided plan terms specify no seat cap, quota, trial period or renewal condition. This makes it a straightforward fit for individuals or teams needing file-renaming rules without a software charge; the project’s MIT license also makes its source-available distribution relevant to builders who value open licensing.

Platforms

reNamerX runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. Windows installation requires Windows 10 or newer, a 64-bit operating system, at least 50MB of free disk space and 4GB of recommended RAM. Windows users on older or 32-bit systems are outside those requirements. Building from source requires Node.js 16 or newer, npm or yarn, Rust and Cargo, and Git, so source builds are a developer-oriented route rather than the simplest installation path. The repository provides Windows MSI and EXE installers; users who run into installation problems are directed to open a GitHub issue.

Implementation and support

The project identifies Gabriel Cavazos (GigaCode) as its developer and is built with Tauri, React and TailwindCSS, using Zustand for state management. Its initial release is v1.0.0. A security policy is linked, but there are no specific security or compliance claims to assess, so organizations with formal control requirements should evaluate it against their own standards.

Who it's for

Choose reNamerX when you need repeatable file-renaming rules across operating systems, especially when regex or metadata-based names are useful and preview plus undo matter. It can process hundreds of files under consistent rules, making it more compelling for recurring batches than occasional one-off edits. Look elsewhere if your workflow must rename folders, or if you need stated enterprise security assurances.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, MIT-licensed distribution avoids a recurring software cost.
Pros: Regex, metadata, date/time insertion and presets give recurring or complex file-naming tasks room to grow beyond basic text and case changes.
Pros: Preview and undo/redo provide useful safeguards when rules affect large batches.
Cons: It renames files, not folders, despite supporting folder-based file selection.
Cons: Windows users need a 64-bit Windows 10-or-newer system, and source builds require a multi-tool development setup.

Alternatives

File Renaming Software is the broader category directory for comparing tools. For a free Windows-only option, Ant Renamer is a narrower platform fit than reNamerX’s Linux, macOS and Windows coverage. Nomina is another free option across those three platforms, with no paid plans or usage limits stated. PBRenamer also covers Linux, macOS and Windows and is GPL-3.0 licensed.

If you prefer a paid one-time option with a trial, RenameKit offers a 9.99 USD per once Lifetime License after a 3-day full-feature trial; after the trial, batches are limited to 20 items, and the license is for one device at a time but transferable. For a Windows-only choice with explicit non-commercial limits, ReNamer has a free Lite plan capped at five rules and five presets, or a Pro plan at 29.95 USD per once.

Bulk Rename Utility is Windows-only and uses paid per-computer plans, so it is the alternative to consider if that platform and a paid license model suit your deployment better. Bulk Renamer is a free, MIT-licensed option on Linux, macOS and Windows with no account, trial or watermark. Advanced Renamer is a macOS and Windows alternative whose free plan allows 10,000 files and five methods per batch; choose it when those stated batch limits fit your work.

Verdict

reNamerX is a strong fit for builders and teams that need free, cross-platform file batches with flexible rules and a preview-and-recovery loop. Its main reason to choose is the combination of regex and metadata options with no software price. Its clearest reason to look elsewhere is equally concrete: it cannot rename folders, and Windows adoption depends on meeting its 64-bit Windows 10-or-newer requirements.
