Overview

Visual Studio Code is an open-source code editor with AI-assisted editing and agent workflows, available on desktop and in a browser. It is best suited to developers and teams who want one adaptable editor across languages and environments. Its broad extension support and integrated development tools make it a strong general-purpose choice, while browser execution and extension permissions call for care.

Key features

VS Code includes support for JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, and HTML, with extensions adding coverage for almost every major programming language. More than 80,000 extensions in the Marketplace give teams considerable scope to fit the editor to their stack. That breadth comes with a security trade-off: extensions can access files, make network requests, and run processes with VS Code’s permissions. The Marketplace signs extensions and the editor verifies those signatures at installation, but this does not limit what an installed extension can do.

Multi-cursor and column editing, large-file handling, an integrated terminal, code running and debugging, build tasks, and local history make it a capable daily workbench. Git source control is built in, and VS Code connects to GitHub Codespaces and remote development environments. Remote Development can open a folder in a container on a remote machine, which is useful when a project belongs in a remote environment rather than on the local machine. Settings Sync shares user settings across instances, while profiles let users keep and switch between customization sets.

AI-powered inline suggestions and intelligent completions complement agent workflows. Users can customize the workflows with instructions, skills, custom agents, MCP servers, plugins, and extensions. Copilot and third-party providers are supported, and users can bring their own model key. A GitHub account is required to start building with AI agents, so that dependency matters to teams choosing an AI workflow.

The desktop editor runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows, with downloads for macOS, Windows, and Linux DEB or RPM packages. VS Code for the Web is useful when a browser-based editor fits the job, but its execution environment is limited, making the desktop version the more suitable choice when local execution is important.

Pricing

Visual Studio Code: 0.00 USD per free. The editor is free for private or commercial use, with no free trial because there is no paid entry plan to trial. It suits individual developers and teams that want a no-cost editor without a seat charge. The free plan is the product itself; no paid editor tier is required for its core editing capabilities.

Organizations can restrict which extensions users install and host a private extension marketplace, useful for teams that need more control over the tools in their development environment. The product license says Microsoft may not provide support services, a consideration for organizations that require a defined support commitment. Use also requires agreement to the license and privacy statement.

Platforms

VS Code is available for Linux, macOS, Windows, and the web. The browser edition has a limited execution environment; desktop downloads are offered for macOS, Windows, and Linux DEB or RPM packages. Insiders edition and other platforms are also offered.

Workspace Trust can keep workspace code from running automatically while a project is in Restricted Mode, giving users a control when opening unfamiliar projects. VS Code collects telemetry, which can be disabled with the telemetry.telemetryLevel setting; extensions may collect separate telemetry. Teams should account for both the editor’s controls and the permissions extensions retain.

Who it's for

VS Code is a strong fit for developers who want broad language coverage, a large extension ecosystem, and built-in tools for editing, debugging, source control, and remote work in one editor. It also suits teams that want customizable AI agent workflows and can manage extension choices and permissions. It is less suited to users who need a browser editor with full local execution or organizations that require Microsoft-provided support services.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free for private or commercial use, with no seat cost for the editor.
Pros: More than 80,000 extensions and support for almost every major programming language help it adapt to varied stacks.
Pros: Built-in Git, debugging, terminal, remote development, and settings sync reduce the need to switch tools for common development work.
Pros: Agent workflows support planning, code changes, command execution, and iteration, with customization options and third-party providers.
Cons: Browser execution is limited, so the web version may not suit work that depends on local execution.
Cons: Extensions can access files, use the network, and run processes with VS Code’s permissions, so signing does not eliminate the need to vet them.
Cons: AI agent setup requires a GitHub account, and extensions may collect telemetry separately from VS Code.
Cons: Microsoft may not provide support services under the product license, which can be a drawback for teams needing vendor support.

Alternatives

For a focused Minecraft Bedrock add-on workflow inside VS Code, Bedrocken is a free extension for VS Code ^1.87.0. Blockception Minecraft Bedrock Development is another free VS Code extension, aimed at Minecraft Bedrock Addons and Minecraft Education Edition.

For Minecraft modeling and project work across desktop, web, and mobile, Blockbench is free to use for any type of project. If the need is specifically to launch Minecraft rather than edit code, Minecraft Launcher is free to download, though access to games requires ownership or a time-limited demo.

For a narrower editing need, JsonForge is a free, open-source web and Electron app under the MIT license. Readers exploring the broader category can also browse Code editors, Text Editors, PHP IDEs, or Go IDEs. Minecraft-focused lists include Minecraft Add-on Editors and Minecraft Mod Development Tools.

Verdict

Choose Visual Studio Code if you want a free, flexible editor that can span languages, remote environments, and AI-assisted workflows, with a large extension ecosystem to fit your stack. Its main advantages are breadth and customization without an editor fee. Look elsewhere if the browser version’s execution limits, extension permissions, GitHub account requirement for agents, or lack of assured Microsoft support conflict with how your team works.
