Overview

NovaNAS brings storage administration, file access and application deployment into one browser-based system. It supports ZFS and EXT4, RAID management, and SMB/CIFS and NFS shared folders, making it a capable foundation for a small NAS without requiring separate interfaces for those jobs.

Installation is a firm boundary: NovaNAS requires a fresh Debian 13 system and should not be installed over an existing system. Debian 13 is its only supported operating system. That makes it a better fit for dedicated hardware than for teams hoping to repurpose an established server or choose among several host platforms.

Key features

Files, storage and apps

The browser file manager supports browsing, uploading, downloading and previewing files. Shared folders use SMB/CIFS or NFS with access controls, while storage support spans ZFS, EXT4 and RAID management. These cover the essentials for a home or small-business file server, although user permissions are currently limited to administrators; role-based permissions are planned but not yet available.

A community app store deploys Docker applications in one click, including Plex, Nextcloud and Pi-hole. This gives users a route to run common services alongside storage without managing each deployment entirely separately. Virtualization support is not yet available, so NovaNAS is not a fit for teams that need virtual machines on the NAS.

Backups, security and monitoring

Automated backups can target external drives or cloud storage, and NovaNAS systems can back up to one another over a network using API key authentication. That is a useful range for personal and small-office recovery needs, though the described options do not establish a broader enterprise backup or recovery workflow.

Network and security tools include UFW firewall management, DynDNS, automatic Let's Encrypt certificate handling and WebAuthn/FIDO2 passkey login. Real-time monitoring covers CPU, memory, disk and network use. Historical monitoring and scheduled tasks are still planned, which limits the current system for users who need trend analysis or built-in scheduling.

Pricing

NovaNAS is free and open source, with no free trial because there is no paid plan to trial. The NovaNAS plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the NAS operating system. It requires Debian 13, at least 2 GB RAM, a 1-core CPU and a 20 GB system drive, in addition to data drives. There is no paid tier described that trades a price for more capacity or support; users can seek support through the documentation and GitHub Issues.

Platforms

NovaNAS supports Linux, web access, self-hosted deployment and an API. The installer is designed for a fresh Debian 13 system, with a minimum 2 GB RAM, 1-core CPU and 20 GB system drive. Those modest minimums make the hardware threshold accessible, but the operating-system restriction and clean-install requirement matter more than raw resource needs when assessing fit.

Who it's for

NovaNAS suits technically capable home users and small businesses setting up dedicated storage hardware who want shared folders, a web file manager, Docker apps and backup tools in one open-source system. It is less suitable for environments that require a supported operating system other than Debian 13, preserve an existing installation, need virtual machines, or depend on role-based access permissions today.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with no per-seat or paid-plan cost described.
Pros: ZFS and EXT4, RAID, SMB/CIFS and NFS bring core storage and sharing functions together.
Pros: One-click Docker app deployment includes familiar options such as Plex, Nextcloud and Pi-hole.
Pros: Backup destinations include external drives and cloud storage, as well as other NovaNAS systems.
Cons: Debian 13 and a fresh installation are mandatory, excluding other host systems and existing installations.
Cons: Permissions are currently limited to admins, which is a constraint for multi-user teams.
Cons: Virtualization, historical resource monitoring and scheduled tasks are not yet available.

Alternatives

NAS Software is the broader category to compare if NovaNAS's Debian-only installation boundary does not match your stack.

Consider napp-it if you want a freemium NAS option with support for Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted platforms; its CS Home plan is free for noncommercial home use, capped at three servers, with no capacity limit and no support.

ZimaOS is a free-plan alternative with a wider platform range, including Android, iOS, macOS and Windows as well as Linux, self-hosted and web.

DPlaneOS offers a free Community Edition under AGPLv3 for use, modification and distribution on hardware you own, making it an alternative for users prioritizing those terms.

openmediavault is another free NAS system, distributed under GNU GPL v3, for readers comparing open-source options.

OSNEXUS QuantaStor may suit noncommercial, educational or testing use where a stated capacity boundary matters: its free Community Edition allows 80 TB raw capacity and up to four servers per storage grid.

TrueNAS is a free Community Edition download for any x86 hardware, with community support, and is worth considering if that hardware flexibility matters.

KitchenAsty is another free option with Android, iOS, self-hosted and web platform support.

Rockstor is an alternative for readers comparing free NAS software across Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms.

Verdict

Choose NovaNAS for a dedicated Debian 13 machine when you want a free, web-managed NAS that combines storage sharing, Docker apps and several backup routes. Its main advantage is that breadth in one open-source system; look elsewhere if you need to preserve an existing installation, use another operating system, run virtual machines or grant role-based permissions.
