Overview

Alongside driver updates and game and application optimization, ShadowPlay puts recording tools in an in-game overlay. That consolidation is useful if you want to capture play and check system performance without assembling separate tools. It is less suitable for teams seeking a cross-platform capture workflow or broad hardware support.

Key features

Manual recording reaches up to 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps, with NVIDIA describing performance impact as minimal. Those high ceilings give creators room for detailed footage, though they matter less for routine clips. Owners of GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs can record in AV1, which NVIDIA says delivers higher fidelity video with less disk space.

Instant replay saves recent gameplay, while NVIDIA Highlights can capture key moments such as clutch kills and match-winning plays. These options help players preserve footage without recording every session. The overlay also displays FPS, FPS 1% Low, GPU and CPU utilization, and system latency—useful signals when diagnosing game performance, though not a substitute for a dedicated production monitoring workflow.

The app adds a GPU control center for graphics settings and tuning, plus Freestyle filters for supported games. It also provides discovery and launch access for GeForce NOW, Project G-Assist, NVIDIA Broadcast and NVIDIA RTX Remix. That breadth makes the app a useful hub for NVIDIA users, but the value of those adjacent tools depends on whether they fit your setup.

Pricing

The NVIDIA App plan is 0.00 USD per free. It includes the Windows app’s recording, overlay and optimization capabilities without a paid tier to weigh against them. The trade-off is compatibility rather than a lower feature tier: the plan requires Windows 10 or 11, a supported GPU and GeForce driver 551.52 or later.

Platforms

ShadowPlay runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Requirements include a GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40 or 50 Series GPU, 2 GB of system memory, 600 MB of disk space and driver 551.52 or later. The RTX 40-series AV1 option is narrower still. Login is optional; signing in enables redemption of GPU bundles and rewards.

Who it's for

ShadowPlay is a strong fit for GeForce RTX owners who want game capture, instant replay, highlights and performance metrics in the same app they use for driver updates and game optimization. Creators with compatible hardware can benefit from its high-resolution HDR modes. Look elsewhere if you need macOS or Linux support, or if your machine does not meet the GPU and driver requirements.

Pros and cons

Pro: Up to 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps provides substantial capture headroom.
Pro: Instant replay and automatic Highlights reduce the need to record entire gaming sessions.
Pro: FPS, 1% Low, utilization and latency metrics put useful performance signals in the same overlay.
Con: Windows-only support and RTX 20-series-or-newer requirements exclude many systems.
Con: AV1 recording is limited to GeForce RTX 40-series owners, so not every supported GPU gets that encoding option.

Alternatives

For another free Windows game-capture option, consider SteelSeries Moments; ShadowPlay is the more direct fit when you specifically need NVIDIA’s capture and monitoring tools alongside its game optimization. For broader game-capture comparisons, see Game recording software. The Game Overlay Software and Game Graphics Optimization Software directories are useful when choosing a more focused overlay or optimization tool. For audio-focused choices, see Audio Enhancement Software; for virtual camera tools, Virtual Camera Software; and for benchmarking, Game Benchmark Software.

Verdict

Choose ShadowPlay if you have a supported GeForce RTX Windows PC and want free, high-resolution capture paired with instant replay, highlights and in-game performance metrics. Its main advantage is bringing those tools together with NVIDIA’s optimization features. Choose another solution if you need broader operating-system or GPU support.
