Overview

OBS Studio is a desktop production tool for capturing video and audio, arranging them into scenes, and recording or streaming the result. It is best suited to creators and teams comfortable configuring a desktop workflow and wanting control over sources and extensions.

Its strength is breadth without a subscription: scenes, audio controls and an extensibility API support varied production setups. The trade-off is that it is not a browser studio and does not support multistreaming, so it is a weaker fit for teams that need either workflow built in.

Key features

Scene-based production

Scenes can combine windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards, with no stated scene-count ceiling. Custom transitions, including user-provided stinger videos, help distinguish scene changes; Studio Mode lets an operator preview scenes and sources before putting them live. Multiview monitors up to eight scenes, while hotkeys cover many actions, including recording and streaming controls. These controls make OBS useful for productions with prepared layouts, though they assume a desktop operator rather than a browser-based collaborative studio.

Audio and extensibility

The mixer applies filters per source, including noise gate, noise suppression and gain, and supports VST plugins. An API supports plugins and scripts, with Lua and Python available for scripting. That openness gives technically capable users room to tailor workflows, but teams that do not want to configure extensions may find less value in that flexibility.

Capture and destinations

OBS records video and streams live, with encoder as its primary stream mode. It supports scheduling and looping or replaying streams, and lists 4K as its maximum resolution. It supports popular streaming platforms, including Twitch and YouTube. Streams connect from the user's computer directly to the streaming service rather than depending on OBS servers.

Pricing

OBS Studio — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan has no watermarks or usage limitations and can be used commercially. OBS is open source under GPLv2, subject to the license terms, and there is no free trial because the software is free. There are no lower-priced tiers to trade features for a lower cost; the practical cost is adopting and maintaining a desktop setup suited to your production needs.

Platforms

OBS Studio runs on Windows, macOS and Linux; it is not browser-based. Windows support covers Windows 10 and 11. The system requirements specify macOS 13.0 or newer; Linux distribution is through Flathub and an Ubuntu 24.04-or-newer PPA. OBS lists version 32.2.2 as its latest release, released August 14th.

Who it's for

Choose OBS if you need a free recording and streaming application with scene-level control, configurable audio, and an API for plugins or scripts. Its commercial-use permission and direct connection to streaming services also suit independent creators and teams that want to avoid a hosted studio workflow. Look elsewhere if your production depends on a browser studio or multistreaming, both of which OBS lacks.

Pros and cons

Pro: The free plan has no watermarks or usage limits and permits commercial use, avoiding feature caps tied to a paid tier.
Pro: Unlimited scenes, preview controls and eight-scene Multiview provide a substantial toolkit for prepared live productions.
Pro: Per-source audio filters, VST support and Lua or Python scripting let capable users adapt the workflow.
Con: It is desktop software, not a browser-based studio, which rules it out for teams seeking a browser-first production setup.
Con: Multistreaming is not supported, so users who need to broadcast to several destinations at once will need another solution.

Alternatives

For game recording, Game recording software is a relevant category to compare; for live production, consider Game Streaming Software or Live Streaming Software. Virtual Camera Software and Screen Recording Software cover adjacent needs, while Live TV streaming services are a separate category.

SteelSeries Moments is a free Windows alternative. Outplayed is a Windows freemium option whose Core plan includes three months of Outplayed.tv hosting; its Premium plan adds unlimited hosting, ad removal, layout customization and enhanced fullscreen mode. Bandicam is a freemium alternative with Windows, macOS, Linux and web platform support. Medal is a freemium option for Windows, Android and iOS; its Premium plan costs 9.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes removable watermarks, auto-generated subtitles, full original-quality uploads and unlimited cloud storage. Streamlabs Highlighter is a free macOS and Windows option built into Streamlabs Desktop, with automated gameplay highlight detection and clip editing and export. Razer Game Clips is a free Windows alternative. Segra is a free, open-source game recorder for Linux and Windows with a replay buffer, clip editor and automatic game highlights.

Verdict

OBS Studio is the right choice for creators and teams who want a free, commercially usable desktop recorder and streaming tool with deep scene, audio and extension controls. Its principal reason to choose it is the combination of an unrestricted free plan and substantial customization. Choose another tool if browser-based production or multistreaming is essential.
