Overview

Oleafly is a free desktop workspace for technical writing, combining LaTeX, Typst, and Markdown projects with PDF review, reference handling, and optional AI connections. It suits people working solo or collaborating through Git who want a local-first setup across macOS, Windows, or Linux. Its breadth is useful, but the lack of managed sync, comments, and live co-editing makes it a poor fit for teams that expect collaboration inside the editor.

Key features

Support for LaTeX, Typst, and Markdown makes Oleafly relevant beyond conventional LaTeX editing. It can import project folders and ZIP files, including exports from online LaTeX editors, and export to PDF, DOCX, HTML, Markdown, or a source ZIP. That range helps when a document must move between formats or tools, though the core experience remains a desktop workspace rather than a shared web editor.

Research search spans alphaXiv and OpenAlex, while Crossref checks citations. Reference libraries can be imported from BibTeX, RIS, EndNote XML, and Zotero RDF. Built-in spelling and grammar checks use Hunspell and Harper locally, with checks focused on prose rather than LaTeX commands and math. Together, these features make it a practical writing and reference environment, but not a substitute for specialized review of mathematical notation.

Optional AI connections include hosted providers, local Ollama models, custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and supported CLI agents such as Claude Code and Codex. Users choose what context to send to hosted AI. The maker says files remain on the user's machine and that Oleafly has no account requirement or telemetry; those are meaningful design choices for privacy-conscious writers, while use of hosted AI still involves sending selected context to that provider.

Writing, local compilation, PDF review, and proofreading work offline. Packages, fonts, and tools need to be downloaded beforehand, so offline readiness depends on preparing the environment. GitHub push and pull, Git-based collaboration, MCP tools, Ollama, and AI connections extend the workflow. Submission preflight covers compilation, venue, ATS, accessibility, references, and privacy, but it does not promise an ATS score.

Pricing

Free — 0.00 USD per free. The desktop app has no subscription. This is the whole Oleafly plan, making it an easy fit for individuals and teams willing to use Git rather than pay for a managed collaboration service. There is no free trial because the app is free. Paid AI providers may charge for usage, so connecting one can add costs outside the desktop app.

Platforms

Oleafly is a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It supports offline editing and a visual editor, with Git integration for collaboration. It does not currently offer real-time co-editing, comments, or managed sync; teams need to handle collaboration through Git.

Who it's for

Choose Oleafly if you write technical documents across LaTeX, Typst, or Markdown, want citation and PDF tools alongside the editor, and prefer local files with optional AI connections. It is especially suited to individual workflows or teams already comfortable with Git. Look elsewhere if shared live editing, in-app comments, or managed synchronization is a requirement.

Pros and cons

Pros: One free desktop app supports three writing formats and multiple export targets, which can reduce tool switching across technical documents.
Pros: Local proofreading, offline writing and compilation, and user-controlled AI context give privacy-minded users more control over their workflow.
Pros: GitHub push and pull and Git-based collaboration fit teams that already manage document changes in version control.
Cons: No real-time co-editing, comments, or managed sync means teams wanting a shared editor need another workflow.
Cons: Offline work requires downloading packages, fonts, and tools in advance, which adds preparation before travel or disconnected work.
Cons: Hosted AI usage may cost extra, and proofreading focuses on prose rather than math or LaTeX commands.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see LaTeX Editors. JianTeX is worth considering if you want a free option spanning desktop, web, and self-hosted use. Prism is a web alternative with unlimited projects, collaborators, compile time, and compile speed on its free plan. Texmaker is a free desktop LaTeX editor for the same three operating systems, with a LaTeX distribution required separately.

Texpile is another free offline desktop editor for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Choose TeXposit if a web editor with unlimited projects and collaborators, an AI assistant, full version history, and no compile timeouts better fits your needs. TeXstudio offers a free GPL v2 open-source desktop editor across Windows, Linux, and macOS. TeXworks is a free, open-source desktop application for those platforms. Verbosus is a freemium option for Android, iOS, and web, with a free plan capped at two local projects and two cloud projects, among other per-project limits.

Verdict

Oleafly is a strong choice for technical writers who want a free, local desktop workspace with several document formats, references, PDF review, and optional AI integrations. Git collaboration and offline capabilities are practical strengths, but the missing shared editing and managed sync are decisive drawbacks for teams that need collaboration built into the editor.
