Overview

Omnivore is an open-source reading and annotation service for people who want articles, newsletters, PDFs and documents in one text-focused library. It is best suited to readers and teams willing to run their own server; its reading and note-taking workflow is broad, but the discontinued cloud service makes deployment a prerequisite.

Saved material can be read without distraction, annotated and synchronized across devices. Labels, filters and indexed search help manage a collection, while Logseq and Obsidian plugins connect it to note-taking workflows.

Key features

Capture and organize

Omnivore accepts articles, newsletters, PDFs and documents. Its email inbox can receive subscriptions and emailed files, including Substack newsletters, so reading that arrives by email can join the same library as saved web content. Labels, filters and fully indexed text search provide useful ways to retrieve material as the collection grows.

Annotations and integrations

Notes and highlights are built into the reading workflow, and highlights can be exported. Plugins synchronize saved reading, highlights and notes with Logseq and Obsidian. That makes Omnivore a stronger fit for research and reference workflows than a tool limited to saving links, particularly for users of those two note-taking apps.

Offline and audio

Offline access supports reading away from a connection. Text-to-speech is available in the iOS app, including downloaded audio for offline playback; readers who depend on audio on other platforms should not assume the same capability there.

Rules and self-hosting

Rules can apply actions when articles are created or modified, but the feature is beta and web-only. The project can be forked, extended or deployed on a user's own server. Its Docker setup starts PostgreSQL, a web frontend, an API server and a content-fetching service, offering a defined deployment path while also making server operation part of the ownership cost.

The cloud application was deprecated in November 2024, so Omnivore is now completely self-hosted. Its AGPL-3.0 license covers Omnivore and its Readability.js extensions. The security policy directs vulnerability reports to GitHub Issues and prohibits social engineering; the privacy policy names Omnivore Media, Inc. as company and GDPR data controller and says it uses personal data to provide and improve the service. Discord is the community channel for participation and discussion.

Pricing

Free (self-hosted): 0.00 USD per free. The free plan means deploying Omnivore on your own server; it does not provide the former cloud application. It suits readers or teams prepared to operate the service and want an open-source reading workflow without a subscription price. The tradeoff is that the server, rather than a hosted Omnivore service, must be part of the setup.

Platforms

Omnivore supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, browser extension, API and self-hosted deployment. Mobile apps and browser extension broaden capture and reading across devices, while the API and self-hosting suit teams integrating or operating their own stack. Platform breadth does not change the central constraint: users must now self-host.

Who it's for

Choose Omnivore if your reading spans articles, email newsletters and documents, and you value annotations, search, offline reading or synchronization with Logseq and Obsidian enough to run a self-hosted service. It is a poor fit for readers seeking a cloud-managed inbox, or for teams that do not want deployment and operation to be part of their reading tool.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad capture: Articles, newsletters, PDFs and documents can share one reading library, including material sent to its email inbox.
Useful retrieval and annotation: Labels, filters, indexed search, notes, highlights and highlight export support a reference-oriented workflow.
Open deployment and integrations: AGPL-3.0 licensing, a Docker setup, API support and Logseq and Obsidian plugins give technically capable users room to operate and connect the service.

Cons

No hosted service: The cloud application was deprecated in November 2024, making self-hosting mandatory rather than optional.
Uneven feature scope: Rules remain a beta web-only feature, and text-to-speech with offline downloads is described for iOS rather than across platforms.
Operational responsibility: The Docker deployment includes a database, frontend, API and content-fetching service, a meaningful commitment for users seeking a simple hosted reader.

Alternatives

GoodLinks is the alternative for readers who prefer its Apple-oriented platform range of iOS and macOS plus API and extension support; its plan is 9.99 USD per month, billed Buy once, with new features after one year requiring GoodLinks Premium.
Couch suits iOS and macOS users who want unlimited saves and basic features free, with a lifetime Pro option for advanced features.
Matter is an iOS and web alternative with a free tier described as offering unlimited library access; its Premium plan is a monthly subscription and includes HD text-to-speech.
PaperSpan is worth considering for Android, iOS, web and extension access, with mobile offline reading, highlights and sending one article at a time to Kindle in its free plan.
Instapaper offers a free plan with unlimited article, video and page saves, cross-device sync, folders and API integration; choose it if those free capabilities matter more than Omnivore's self-hosted setup.
Atlas Reader is a web-only option whose free tier caps Kindle articles at five per month, RSS sources at 10 and PDF storage at 100 MB; its Premium plan is 5.00 USD per month.
Burn 451 is an option across web, macOS and iOS with an indefinitely available free plan that requires no card, capped at five Flame saves per day, 30 Spark items, 100 Vault items and 30 MCP requests per day; Pro is 4.99 USD per month.
Freezetab is a web alternative centered on a Chrome extension and local use without an internet connection, with a free tier for saving links, tabs, articles, quotes and feeds.

Verdict

Omnivore is a strong choice for technically capable readers and teams who want a flexible, open-source reading library that connects annotations to Logseq or Obsidian. Its main reason to choose it is the combination of broad capture, indexed organization and note-taking integrations; its main reason to look elsewhere is that the cloud service is gone and self-hosting is now required.
