Overview

OpenBuzz covers the social workflow from idea to measurement: teams can generate and adapt copy, plan it on a visual calendar, publish across supported networks, handle incoming conversations and review channel analytics. Its AI features are not tied to a single provider: it supports OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and a deterministic mock mode works without an AI key.

The open-source Community Edition is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted with Docker Compose, Postgres and Keycloak. That is a meaningful option for organizations that want control over deployment and, usually, personal data. The trade-off is operational responsibility: self-hosting requires maintaining the deployment and its dependencies.

Key features

Content, calendar and publishing

The AI Content Studio generates captions, hashtags, ideas, rewrites, replies, threads and image prompts tuned to platforms. That range can support both drafting and repurposing, while native publishing and a visual calendar put planning and execution in the same workflow. The practical value depends on volume: Free allows 50 AI generations per month and 30 scheduled posts, while Professional removes the scheduled-post cap but limits generation to 1,000 per month.

Inbox and analytics

A unified inbox gathers comments, mentions and direct messages, with AI-drafted replies left for user approval rather than sent automatically. Analytics cover reach, impressions, engagement, channel breakdowns and best-time heatmaps. Teams that need heatmaps and advanced analytics must move to Teams; the Free plan includes core analytics.

Channels and integrations

OpenBuzz names 14 supported networks: Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business, Mastodon, Bluesky, Reddit, Telegram and WhatsApp. That breadth is useful for teams coordinating across mainstream and decentralized services. Self-hosted deployments can use any S3-compatible media bucket; hosted plans can optionally integrate Zoho Billing.

Security and data control

The privacy policy describes authentication controls, role-based access, encryption in transit, secret management, token protection, logging, monitoring and least-privilege practices. For self-hosted instances, the deploying organization usually controls personal data, and maintainers do not receive instance data unless it is sent to them for specified purposes. This offers a clearer control boundary than a hosted-only workflow, though it does not remove the organization’s responsibility for operating its instance.

Pricing

OpenBuzz is freemium. During beta, every account is virtually upgraded to Enterprise for free, with no credit card required; that makes the beta a low-friction way to assess the product, but it should not be mistaken for the permanent plan limits.

Free: 0.00 USD per free (billed $0/ forever). It includes 3 social accounts, 30 scheduled posts, 50 AI generations per month, 1 workspace, 1 member, AI Content Studio and core analytics. It is a useful solo starting point, but the account and generation caps constrain wider use.
Professional: 19.99 USD per month (billed $19.99/ per month). It raises the limit to 10 social accounts, provides unlimited scheduled posts and 1,000 AI generations per month, and adds bulk scheduling and generation plus API access. It fits a solo operator or small team whose publishing volume has outgrown Free, but it does not include the member allowance or approval workflows of Teams.
Teams: 49.99 USD per month (billed $49.99/ per month). It supports 25 social accounts and 10 members, with advanced analytics and heatmaps, approval workflows, outbound webhooks and 5,000 AI generations per month. It is the more suitable hosted tier for collaborative publishing and review, though its stated account and member limits still matter for larger organizations.
Enterprise: custom pricing. It offers unlimited accounts, members, workspaces and AI generations, making it the tier to consider when the Teams caps are too restrictive.

The free Community Edition is a separate self-hosting route: it avoids a hosted subscription, but requires the organization to run the software and supporting services itself.

Platforms

OpenBuzz is available on web, through an API and as a self-hosted deployment. API access is included in Professional, while the self-hosted edition gives technically capable organizations more control over deployment and data. GitHub issues are the route for bug reports and technical questions; Enterprise inquiries also go through GitHub.

Who it's for

OpenBuzz is a strong fit for creators, startups, agencies and small businesses that want content creation, publishing and inbox work together, particularly if they value API access or self-hosting. It is less compelling for a solo user with modest needs who would be satisfied by simpler free quotas, or for a large team that wants to avoid managing infrastructure and will exceed Teams limits.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad workflow coverage: AI drafting, scheduling, publishing, inbox and analytics sit within one platform, reducing the need to assemble separate tools for those tasks.
Flexible AI setup: OpenAI-compatible endpoints and a no-key mock mode give builders options beyond a single required provider.
Self-hosting and data control: AGPL-3.0 Community Edition, Docker Compose deployment and S3-compatible media storage suit organizations that want to operate the stack themselves.
Useful collaboration features at Teams: Approval workflows, webhooks, heatmaps and 10 member seats address real coordination needs beyond basic publishing.

Cons

Free is deliberately bounded: Three accounts, 30 scheduled posts, 50 monthly AI generations and one member make it a trial-size plan rather than a roomy team tier.
Generation quotas remain on paid plans: Professional caps usage at 1,000 per month and Teams at 5,000, so AI-heavy workflows need monitoring.
Self-hosting shifts operational work to the customer: Docker Compose, Postgres and Keycloak are part of the setup, which is not the simplest choice for teams seeking a fully managed service.

Alternatives

Choose Buffer if a free plan with up to three channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel, plus Android, iOS and browser-extension support, better matches a lighter workflow.

Metricool is a fit to compare if a free plan centered on one brand, 20 monthly posts and competitor tracking is the priority.

Consider Pallyy if its free allowance of 11 accounts, one team user and 15 scheduled posts suits your account mix better.

Sociopilots is worth comparing for its free Community plan with unlimited connected accounts, scheduled posts and users, alongside API and self-hosted options.

Pick Hookpost if its free plan of two channels, 30 posts per month, one user and a public API is the closer fit.

Postiz is an alternative for teams that want Android and iOS access or a self-hosted option, with its Standard plan priced at 29.00 USD per month and five channels.

Choose Predis.ai if a paid plan built around monthly credits and publishing to 10 channels fits better; its Core plan is 24.00 USD per month billed yearly and does not include auto posting.

Agorapulse is another option to compare if Android and iOS availability and a free plan for one user and three social profiles are priorities.

Verdict

OpenBuzz is best for builders and small teams that want a broad social workflow, flexible AI connectivity and the choice to self-host. The case for choosing it is the combination of coverage and control; the case for looking elsewhere is the operational burden of self-hosting or the lower plans’ account, seat and generation limits.
