Overview

OpenEBS implements the Container Native Storage pattern: Kubernetes orchestrates volume services, while OpenEBS runs exclusively in userspace rather than depending on Linux kernel storage software. That makes it a fit for platform teams that want storage operations expressed as Kubernetes custom resources and volumes close to their workloads.

The engine mix spans local Hostpath, LVM and ZFS volumes, experimental Rawfile volumes, and replicated Mayastor storage. This breadth lets teams choose per workload instead of forcing every volume into one storage model. The trade-off is operational choice: teams must match engine behavior to workload needs, and Mayastor has specific constraints around its disk pools and encryption keys.

Key features

Storage engines and replication

OpenEBS v4.6 includes Local PV Hostpath, Local PV LVM, Local PV ZFS, experimental Local PV Rawfile, and Replicated PV Mayastor. Local volumes suit workloads that prioritize storage on Kubernetes worker nodes; Mayastor adds synchronous replication across Kubernetes zones for high availability. Mayastor DiskPools are limited to a single block device, a meaningful constraint when designing pool capacity or growth.

Snapshots, backups, and monitoring

Copy-on-write snapshots and clones use Kubernetes-native kubectl operations, keeping those tasks within familiar workflows. Velero plugins support backup and restore to AWS S3, GCP Object Storage, or MinIO. Volume metrics include IOPS, throughput, latency, and traffic patterns for Prometheus and Grafana, giving platform teams signals to monitor storage behavior alongside applications.

Security and operations

Mayastor supports data-at-rest encryption for disk pools with user-defined AES-XTS keys. Those keys cannot be rotated, so teams with key-lifecycle requirements should weigh that limitation before adopting encrypted pools. The public REST API supports TLS, while JWT authentication and internal TLS are planned; plaintext communication is the default. OpenEBS installs with Helm 3.2 or newer, and its default chart installs Hostpath, LVM, ZFS, and Replicated Storage. The kubectl plugin is available for Linux.

Documented integrations include Prometheus, Grafana, Alert Manager, ELK, Loki, Logstash, Velero, OpenShift, EKS, DigitalOcean, Rancher, MicroK8s, and KubeSphere. DataCore offers support services led by program managers and engineers with Certified Kubernetes Administrator and Developer qualifications. OpenEBS was built by MayaData, donated to the CNCF, and is a CNCF sandbox project.

Pricing

OpenEBS open source: 0.00 USD per free. The plan is open-source Kubernetes storage and includes Hostpath, LVM, ZFS, Rawfile, and Replicated PV Mayastor volume types, snapshots, and multi-attach. It is the direct fit for teams comfortable operating their own Kubernetes storage. No paid OpenEBS plan is described.

Platforms

OpenEBS supports API-driven and self-hosted deployments on Linux. Its Kubernetes custom resources provide declarative control, and its integration set spans managed Kubernetes services and distributions including EKS, OpenShift, Rancher, MicroK8s, and KubeSphere. The Linux-only kubectl plugin is a narrower platform limit than the storage system’s Kubernetes API.

Who it's for

OpenEBS is aimed at developers and platform SREs running stateful Kubernetes workloads, including self-managed databases, observability stacks, CI/CD systems, object storage, scalable websites, and ML pipelines. It is strongest for teams that want several storage-engine choices, Kubernetes-native management, and a free open-source model. Teams requiring rotatable encryption keys or multi-device Mayastor DiskPools should look elsewhere or assess those constraints closely.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple local and replicated volume engines let teams align storage choices with workload needs.
Pros: Kubernetes-native snapshots and clones, Velero backups, and Prometheus/Grafana metrics cover important storage operations without leaving the Kubernetes ecosystem.
Pros: The open-source plan includes all listed volume types, snapshots, and multi-attach at 0.00 USD per free.
Cons: Mayastor DiskPools accept only a single block device, limiting pool design.
Cons: Mayastor encryption keys cannot be rotated, and plaintext communication is the default.
Cons: Rawfile is experimental, and the kubectl plugin is Linux-only.

Alternatives

For another Kubernetes-focused distributed block-storage option, consider Longhorn, which is free and open source. Ceph is a free distributed storage choice when a running Ceph cluster for block storage fits the deployment. SeaweedFS is an alternative with a free community-support plan and a free trial; its community plan relies on public documentation and GitHub issues and discussions, with no guaranteed response time. JuiceFS offers a self-hosted Community Edition with community support via GitHub and Discord, as well as a Cloud Service.

MinIO AIStor has a free single-node deployment with its full feature set, but redistribution is prohibited. MooseFS has a free Community edition with a single active master and single-parity erasure coding. DAOS is another free, self-hosted storage option. LINSTOR offers a LINBIT Starter plan starting at 1000.00 USD per year for two nodes. Browse Software-Defined Storage Software or Storage Replication Software for more options in those categories.

Verdict

Choose OpenEBS if your team runs Kubernetes stateful workloads and wants free, Kubernetes-managed local and replicated storage with snapshots, backup integrations, and observability metrics. Its engine breadth is the main draw. Look elsewhere if your design depends on multi-device Mayastor DiskPools or rotatable encryption keys, and account for plaintext defaults when evaluating its security posture.
