Overview

OpenRFID Middleware is an open-source bridge between RFID readers and cloud or on-premise applications such as ERPs and warehouse management systems. It suits teams integrating varied reader hardware into an existing stack, especially those that can run its .NET prerequisite. Its combination of filtering, dispatch and outage buffering is useful for that role, but the repository’s lack of releases or packages makes it a less straightforward adoption than a packaged product.

Key features

Reader plugins cover LLRP, Impinj Octane, Zebra FX, Identium and Alien, alongside TCP/UDP sockets, serial connections and MQTT. That breadth gives teams several routes to connect hardware and applications through one middleware layer; the plugin approach is relevant where reader protocols vary. Filtering includes sliding-window and shift-based deduplication, RSSI thresholds, antenna masking and EPC pattern rules, letting teams control which reads move upstream rather than forwarding every event.

Dispatch supports HTTP GET, POST, PUT and PATCH, with customizable headers and Liquid or Handlebars templates. Payloads can be JSON, form-data, XML or CSV. WebSockets and MQTT provide additional communication options. These choices make the middleware adaptable to different receiving systems, though the guide’s deployment prerequisite still matters: .NET 10.0 SDK or a .NET 8.0+ compatible build target.

During network outages, a persistent SQLite WAL queue stores tags for retransmission when connectivity returns; automatic reader reconnection and exponential backoff support recovery. This is a practical safeguard for readers whose network path to upstream systems is intermittent. A web dashboard, live tag telemetry, diagnostics, WebSocket logs and an OpenAPI/Swagger REST management API give operators visibility and management tools. API key authentication can be enabled with the ApiKey parameter, requiring an X-API-Key header; custom authorization tokens and static keys in HTTP headers are also supported.

Pricing

OpenRFID Middleware is free: its Open-source · MIT License plan is 0.00 USD per free. The free plan includes API access, read-event analytics and movement history, with no paid tier or quota stated. That makes it a low-cost option for teams able to deploy and maintain the middleware themselves. The tradeoff is operational rather than a listed subscription cap: the guide requires a compatible .NET build target, Docker is optional, and the repository shows no releases or packages.

Platforms

OpenRFID Middleware is listed for API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows use. Deployment guidance covers local .NET CLI and Docker Compose, with Docker optional. This suits teams that want to keep the bridge in their own environment, but adoption depends on accommodating the .NET requirement.

Who it's for

Choose it when the job is connecting RFID hardware to existing enterprise applications and you need control over reader protocols, filtering, payloads and recovery behavior. The MIT license and self-hosted deployment suit teams that can own setup and operation. It is a weaker fit for buyers seeking a packaged deployment path or a repository with releases and packages to streamline adoption.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad reader and protocol support, from LLRP and vendor plugins to serial, sockets and MQTT, helps consolidate mixed hardware integrations.
Pro: Configurable filtering and multiple HTTP methods and payload formats provide control over what upstream applications receive.
Pro: The persistent queue, reconnection and backoff address network interruption rather than assuming continuous connectivity.
Con: The .NET 10.0 SDK or compatible .NET 8.0+ target is a prerequisite, which may not suit every deployment stack.
Con: No releases or packages are shown in the repository, so teams looking for packaged distribution should consider that adoption limitation.

Alternatives

Pick TagMatiks if a freemium product with Android and iOS support better suits the deployment: its free Wedge plan caps at 500 scans and its AT Lite plan at 99 active assets. Consider AssetPulse if you prefer a paid product with a free trial and Android or iOS support.

RFTrack is a paid alternative with Windows support and on-premise or on-demand plans; the on-premise option is a perpetual software license for physical servers, virtual servers or a private cloud. Senitron Athena is another paid option, with Android, iOS, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms.

Consider Xemelgo Inventory Management if you want an inventory-management product for Android, iOS or web. HID Approve is a paid alternative for consumer and workforce authentication, deployed as a mobile app or SDK. AMG Read Stream targets enterprise RFID inventory tracking with cloud or on-premises deployment.

SimplyRFID WAVE may suit an iOS-focused buyer seeking a bundled RFID starter kit: its Wave RFID Starter Kit costs 299.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with a minimum 6-month agreement and support, service, a CSL CS108 handheld and Wave app.

Verdict

OpenRFID Middleware is a strong fit for technically equipped teams that need a self-hosted bridge across varied RFID readers and enterprise systems, with configurable filtering and resilience to network outages. Its free MIT-licensed plan removes subscription cost, but the .NET prerequisite and absence of repository releases or packages are real adoption considerations. Choose it when integration control matters more than packaged convenience; look elsewhere if your stack cannot accommodate its runtime or your team wants a product with a more turnkey delivery path.
