Overview

OpenRGB is free, open-source software licensed under GNU General Public License version 2. It aims to control RGB devices from multiple manufacturers without depending on their individual applications. Its interface is designed to use little RAM and CPU, which suits systems where a lighting controller should remain unobtrusive.

Support varies by device and feature: entries distinguish fully supported, problematic, partial, unsupported, and not-applicable capabilities. That is useful for identifying limitations, but it also means OpenRGB is not a safe assumption for every component in a mixed-hardware setup.

Key features

OpenRGB covers addressable RGB control, lighting profiles, game lighting effects, and cross-device synchronization. Its network-based SDK allows third-party software to control supported devices and synchronize OpenRGB instances across multiple PCs. Bindings for C++, Python, C#, and Java make it a plausible foundation for custom integrations, not just a unified desktop controller.

Plugins extend the software with synchronized effects, hardware-stat indicators, third-party lighting integrations, and scheduled profile changes. The Effects Plugin includes options such as Rainbow, Visor, Breathing, audio visualizations, Ambilight, GIF playback, and GLSL shader rendering. The HTTP Hook plugin can trigger basic actions, including profile switching, through an HTTP endpoint. These options offer flexibility, though they make the experience more dependent on selecting and configuring the right extensions.

Named integrations include Artemis, Project Aurora, Home Assistant, and Keyboard Visualizer. Experimental pipeline builds may improve compatibility with some devices, but they are unreleased development versions and may be unstable; they are a poor default for systems that need dependable daily operation.

Pricing

OpenRGB is free, with no paid tier or free trial. The OpenRGB plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free, open-source software under GNU General Public License version 2. There are no paid-plan trade-offs to weigh, but the practical cost is the time needed to check device support and, on Linux, potentially configure hardware permissions.

Platforms

OpenRGB runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, and is tested on x86, x86_64, ARM32, and ARM64 processors. It also offers an API and self-hosted classification. On Linux, standalone use may require installing udev rules so the user can access the hardware interfaces used for RGB control; that setup makes it less turnkey than a simple app install for some users.

Who it's for

OpenRGB fits builders who want one controller across supported devices from multiple manufacturers, users who value open-source software, and developers who want network control or language bindings for custom lighting workflows. It is less suitable for anyone who needs guaranteed feature parity across all hardware or wants to avoid compatibility checks and possible Linux permission setup.

Pros and cons

Pros: A single free, open-source controller can manage supported devices from multiple manufacturers, with profiles, addressable RGB, game effects, and cross-device sync.
Pros: The SDK, language bindings, and plugins give developers several ways to connect lighting with other software and workflows.
Pros: The interface is designed for low RAM and CPU use, an advantage for a utility intended to run alongside other software.
Cons: Support varies by device and feature, so some controls may be partial, problematic, unsupported, or irrelevant to a given component.
Cons: Linux users may need to install udev rules, adding setup work before hardware control is available.
Cons: Experimental pipeline builds can be unstable, so potential compatibility gains come with reliability risk.

Alternatives

Browse RGB Lighting Software for more options. Choose Logitech G HUB if your priority is Logitech gaming-device configuration, presets, and game profiles on macOS or Windows. NZXT CAM is a Windows option whose system monitoring works without NZXT hardware and does not require an account. Consider SignalRGB if you want a Windows freemium alternative with a standard content library, basic cooling and monitoring, and two macros in its free tier. SteelSeries Moments is another Windows option. Aurora RGB is a free, open-source Windows alternative. Nexus spans Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Razer Synapse supports macOS, web, and Windows, while ASUS Armoury Crate is a Windows option.

Verdict

Choose OpenRGB if you want free, open-source, cross-platform RGB control with SDK and plugin options, particularly when coordinating supported hardware or building integrations matters. Look elsewhere if you need predictable support for every device or prefer to avoid compatibility checks and Linux permission setup.
