Overview

openSIS covers student and staff records, health information, admissions, scheduling, attendance, grading, billing, discipline, lesson plans, and analytics. That range can reduce the need to split everyday school operations across separate systems; the trade-off is that larger organizations will need to assess the higher tiers and their staffing requirements.

Integrations include Moodle, Canvas LMS, Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Stripe, PayPal, QuickBooks, Office 365, Azure Active Directory, and Google Workspace. Administrators can export data in delimited files. Open Solutions for Education, Inc. says it is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified for information security management. Its privacy policy describes role-based access, administrator multi-factor authentication, encryption, periodic third-party penetration testing, and a policy against selling personal or student data.

Key features

School operations

Attendance, grades, scheduling, admissions, and discipline are managed alongside records, billing, lesson plans, and analytics. This makes openSIS a broad operational option for schools that want student information and routine administration in one system, rather than a narrowly focused attendance or grading tool.

Integrations, mobile access, and data export

The integration roster spans learning platforms, communication tools, identity services, and payment and accounting products, including Moodle, Google Workspace, Stripe, and QuickBooks. The SaaS Mobile Connect app for iOS and Android gives access to attendance, grades, assignments, schedules, billing, and school communication. Administrators can export data in delimited files, a practical route for moving or analyzing records outside the system.

API and security

API access with full documentation is included in Advanced, not the lower SaaS tiers. Teams that need to connect openSIS to custom systems should factor that tier boundary into their choice. The maker states it holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification; the privacy policy also describes access controls, administrator MFA, encryption, and periodic external penetration testing.

Pricing

openSIS offers a free, downloadable Community Edition and paid SaaS tiers billed annually. The paid prices are per staff member per month, so staffing level matters as much as student headcount when estimating cost.

Community Edition: 0.00 USD per free. It is open source and downloadable, with installation and management left to the institution. It suits teams able to take responsibility for their own deployment.
Core Startup: 4.00 USD per year, billed at $4 / staff / month annually. It supports 5 staff, 50 student accounts, 100 parent accounts, and one school. The fixed caps cannot be exceeded within the tier, making it appropriate only when those limits fit.
Essential: 8.00 USD per year, billed at $8 / staff / month annually. It starts with 5 staff and includes unlimited student and parent accounts and unlimited schools. This is the more practical step for institutions outgrowing Startup’s student, parent, or school caps.
Advanced: 12.00 USD per year, billed at $12 / staff / month annually. It requires a minimum of 10 staff accounts and includes unlimited student and parent accounts. API access makes it the relevant tier for teams needing documented integration capabilities, but the staff minimum is a meaningful cost threshold.
District / State / Enterprise: custom pricing, with a minimum 200-staff subscription and Advanced Tier. Its threshold puts it beyond smaller schools evaluating openSIS for a limited deployment.

A 15-day trial is offered. Support includes self-service, bot assistance, email, telephone, and social media, with training available. Those channels span self-serve and direct contact, though support needs should be weighed alongside plan selection.

Platforms

openSIS supports web, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted use. The self-hosted Community Edition gives institutions control over installation and management; SaaS Mobile Connect extends access to common school tasks on iOS and Android. API access is a feature of Advanced.

Who it's for

The maker describes openSIS for K-12 schools, higher education, vocational and career technical schools, and virtual education. It is strongest for institutions that want a wide set of school operations in one system, can match their enrollment and staff counts to the plan structure, and value either self-management or a SaaS route. Schools exceeding Core Startup’s limits should compare Essential and Advanced rather than treating the entry price as a scalable starting point.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad coverage from records and attendance through billing, discipline, lesson plans, and analytics can centralize a substantial range of school work.
Pro: A downloadable open-source edition provides a no-cost path for institutions prepared to install and manage the software themselves.
Pro: Integrations across learning, productivity, identity, payments, and accounting systems give teams several routes to fit openSIS into an existing stack.
Pro: Mobile Connect covers attendance, grades, assignments, schedules, billing, and school communication on both major mobile platforms.
Con: Core Startup is capped at 5 staff, 50 students, and 100 parents, with no way to add accounts in that tier; even a modestly larger school must move up.
Con: Advanced requires at least 10 staff accounts, so API access comes with a higher entry threshold than the lower plans.
Con: Community Edition leaves installation and ongoing management to the school, which may not suit teams seeking a managed service without a paid plan.

Alternatives

Consider these alternatives if their pricing model, platform coverage, or institutional fit better matches your requirements:

Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT is a paid web and API platform with custom pricing; choose it when personalized pricing and potentially included implementation, training, and ongoing support are a better fit.
Fedena is a freemium option with a free trial and Android, iOS, API, web, and self-hosted support. Its Standard plan is 999.00 USD per year, billed yearly, and includes unlimited users; consider it if that user model better suits your school than openSIS’s tier limits.
Infinite Campus is a paid option with Android, iOS, API, and web platforms.
Full Fabric is a paid API and web platform with a €12,000 / year platform fee and modules priced separately; consider it if a flat institutional platform fee fits your budget and purchasing model.
Oracle NetSuite for Government is a paid Android, iOS, API, and web option; consider it if you need its government-focused service.
Bromcom MIS is a paid Android, iOS, API, and web option with per-pupil pricing that varies by establishment type and package; consider it if that pricing basis and its core MIS package align with your school.
Classter is a paid Android, iOS, API, and web platform with custom plans whose price varies by institution size, type, and selected modules; consider it if you prefer a package scoped to those factors.

Verdict

openSIS is a strong fit for schools that want records, attendance, grading, and a wide range of administrative functions together, with a choice between self-hosting and SaaS. Its main advantage is operational breadth paired with multiple ways to integrate and access the system. Look elsewhere if your school needs to scale within the lowest SaaS tier, or if Advanced’s 10-staff minimum makes API access disproportionate to your needs.
