Overview

OptiCull combines import, comparison and selection around the photo session rather than treating each image in isolation. It can detect sessions while importing from an SD card, apply custom file-naming patterns and analyze photos as they copy. That can bring culling forward in the workflow, though the app is limited to macOS and the maker says there are no plans for a Windows version.

The maker says photos remain on the Mac and AI processing happens on-device, a useful fit for photographers who do not want image files sent to external servers. The privacy policy also says the company collects account, purchase, usage and diagnostic data. The App Store version runs in Apple's sandbox, with access limited to files the user selects, and supports Sign in with Apple with private name and email options.

Key features

Compare similar frames

OptiCull groups duplicate photos into scenes, and users can adjust the grouping preferences. Side-by-side comparison works for photos or scenes, with zoom synchronized on the same face, all faces or the same image region. This gives photographers a consistent way to check expression and detail across near-duplicates; the scene tools are part of Pro rather than the free manual-culling tier.

Automated selection with control

Magi-Cull can reject blurry images or frames with blinking subjects, then select a varied set of keepers according to user preferences. Users can override its assessments, which makes automation a starting point rather than a final verdict. That is useful for large shoots where faster triage matters, but photographers who want automated culling will need Pro.

Import and export

Selected photos can go to Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC, Capture One, Apple Photos and other macOS apps that follow Apple's standard file-import guidelines. Apple Photos is the exception to a seamless handoff: OptiCull has no direct integration, and its maker recommends exporting selected images to a temporary folder for import. That workaround adds a step for Photos users.

OptiCull supports JPG, RAW+JPG and RAW formats supported by the host macOS version. Unsupported RAW files may still work if they contain sufficiently large embedded JPG previews, so photographers with less common camera formats should check compatibility before relying on the app. The maker says it runs on macOS 11.0 or later and can run with 8GB of RAM.

Pricing

Hobbyist: 0.00 USD per free. It includes unlimited photos and projects, RAW previews, manual ratings and assessments, side-by-side comparison and one-click export to editing apps. This is a substantial manual workflow for photographers who do not need scene layouts or AI selection.

Pro: 79.99 USD per once, billed as a one-time purchase. The page also displays “$8/mo” alongside the lifetime offer; the price is for the Apple US Store, while native-currency pricing follows Apple In-App Purchase pricing. Pro includes everything in Free, plus face closeups, scenes and scene layouts, Magi-Cull and Auto-Rate, and additional focus-related capabilities. It is the fit for photographers who will use automated selection or scene-based review; those features are the main reason to move beyond the free tier.

OptiCull also offers a 14-day trial. The one-time Pro price avoids a recurring subscription, while the free plan has no stated photo or project cap.

Platforms

OptiCull is available for macOS, with support for Macs running macOS 11.0 or later. It can run with 8GB of RAM, and no Windows release is planned at this time. Support is offered through Discord and support@dopeai.tech.

Who it's for

OptiCull suits Mac photographers who want to compare similar frames, sort images as they arrive from an SD card and pass selected files into a desktop editor. It is especially compelling for users who value on-device photo analysis and want the option to override AI recommendations. It is a weaker fit for Windows users, photographers whose RAW formats are unsupported by macOS, or Apple Photos users who expect a direct import handoff.

Pros and cons

Pros: On-device photo and AI processing keeps image files local, according to the maker.
Pros: The free plan allows unlimited photos and projects, with manual ratings, comparison and export.
Pros: Adjustable scene grouping, synchronized zoom and overridable AI recommendations support deliberate selection rather than automatic lock-in.
Cons: Scene tools and Magi-Cull require the 79.99 USD one-time Pro purchase.
Cons: Apple Photos requires an export to a temporary folder instead of direct integration.
Cons: RAW compatibility depends on macOS support, and Windows is not on the maker's roadmap.

Alternatives

Photo Culling Software and AI Photo Culling Software are broader category starting points for comparing culling tools.

Selekt is worth considering if Windows support matters; it also offers a free plan with unlimited imports, culling and export, on-device scoring, and cloud AI for 100 photos per month.
Vantage is an option for photographers who want an iPhone app alongside Mac or Windows support; its free iPhone plan focuses on recent duplicates, monthly best photos and space-saving tools.
Photo Curator is the alternative to consider if open-source software or Linux and web access matter more than OptiCull's Mac-focused workflow.
SnapCuller is another freemium culling option for Mac and Windows users.
Keeper is a Mac-only alternative for buyers considering a paid product without a free plan.
FilterPixel is an alternative for photographers who prefer a Windows-capable freemium product or a one-time purchase for a single shoot.
PhotoPicker is a better platform match for photographers who need Android or iOS rather than a Mac desktop app.
Aftershoot is a paid alternative for Mac and Windows users who want unlimited AI culling; its Select plan is 10.00 USD per month billed annually or 15.00 USD with monthly billing.

Verdict

Choose OptiCull if you work on a Mac, want local culling with a strong manual comparison workflow, and value AI recommendations you can override. Its unlimited free manual tier and one-time Pro option make the upgrade decision clear. Look elsewhere if you need Windows support, direct Apple Photos integration or confidence that your RAW format will work without relying on embedded previews.
