Overview

PagerTree is an incident-response service for coordinating on-call work and routing alerts. It fits teams that want scheduling, escalation, and alert handling in one place, from small groups on a free plan to larger organizations that need custom retention and procurement support. Its appeal is operational breadth; teams that depend on paid messaging channels should account for usage thresholds and country coverage.

Key features

Scheduling combines rotations, overrides, reminders, calendar sync, and public, private, or password-protected schedules. That makes it useful for teams with changing coverage or different requirements for schedule visibility. Escalation policies allow unlimited layers, configurable timeouts, reassignment, and up to three repeat alerts. Teams can build longer response paths without relying on a single handoff, although the repeat limit remains relevant for policies that need repeated notifications.

PagerTree aggregates and deduplicates similar alerts over configurable periods from 15 minutes to 30 days. The broad range gives teams control over how aggressively to group recurring events, but the window needs to match the alert pattern: a longer period can combine alerts over a much wider span. Push, email, SMS, voice, WhatsApp, and Slack provide several routes to responders. SMS, voice, and WhatsApp stop once usage reaches 50% of the subscription price unless auto-recharge is enabled, so teams should budget for that threshold rather than assume messaging continues uninterrupted. SMS and voice coverage varies by country.

SAML 2.0 single sign-on supports identity providers including Azure, Okta, and Google. PagerTree says data is encrypted at rest with AES-256, communications use SSL/HTTPS, and encrypted database backups run hourly. Its public security policies are reviewed at least annually and align with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and industry best practices. These points may help teams assess operational fit, but organizations with formal security or contracting requirements should consider the Enterprise plan's review and agreement provisions.

Pricing

The freemium model starts with Basic at $0/user/year, billed annually. It allows up to 5 users and 2 teams, retains data for 3 months, and includes community support. This is a meaningful starting point for a small team, but the user and team caps and shorter retention make it a poor fit for expanding operations or longer incident histories.

Pro costs $15/user/mo and supports up to 25 users, unlimited teams, 1 year of data retention, and email support. It is the natural step for teams that outgrow Basic and need longer retention without moving to unlimited-user pricing. Elite costs $19/user/mo and adds unlimited users and teams, 1 year of retention, and email and phone support. For teams likely to exceed Pro's 25-user cap, Elite removes a clear scaling constraint; the higher per-user price is the tradeoff. Enterprise has custom pricing, unlimited users and teams, custom data retention, a dedicated account manager, MSA and DPA support, security review, and NET 30 invoicing and PO support. It is aimed at organizations with procurement or review needs rather than teams simply seeking more seats.

A 14-day trial is available. Across paid plans, the notification usage threshold matters: once SMS, voice, and WhatsApp usage reaches 50% of the subscription price, those channels stop unless auto-recharge is enabled. Teams relying on these channels should account for that condition and verify country coverage before choosing PagerTree.

Platforms

PagerTree supports web, Android, iOS, and an API, pairing mobile access with a developer-facing integration surface. Its mobile apps suit responders who need to work away from a browser, while the API and webhook options give teams routes to connect their tooling.

Who it's for

PagerTree is best suited to teams that need configurable on-call schedules and escalation paths alongside alert aggregation and multiple notification channels. Basic is sized for small teams testing or operating within tight seat limits; Pro and Elite serve teams that need more users, teams, retention, or support. It is less compelling for globally distributed responders who depend on SMS or voice in countries without confirmed coverage, or for organizations that need notification continuity without managing the usage threshold.

Pros and cons

Pro: Flexible rotations, schedule visibility controls, and calendar sync support varied handoff practices.
Pro: Unlimited escalation layers and alert aggregation windows up to 30 days offer control over routing and noise management.
Pro: Plans scale from a five-user free tier to unlimited users, with an Enterprise option for custom retention and procurement needs.
Con: Basic caps teams at 2 and users at 5, with only 3 months of retention.
Con: SMS, voice, and WhatsApp can stop at the 50% subscription-price threshold unless auto-recharge is enabled.
Con: SMS and voice country coverage varies, which can complicate global responder coverage.

Alternatives

Choose incident.io if its free Basic plan's native Slack or Microsoft Teams incident response, single-team on-call, status page, and essential automation better match a chat-centered workflow.

IncidentRelay is an open-source, self-hosted option for teams that prefer to host their own service.

MonoDuty is another freemium option with a free plan capped at one user, three services, five monitors, five heartbeats, one team, one on-call schedule, five webhooks, and 50 incidents per month.

PagerDuty offers a free incident-management plan capped at five users, one on-call schedule, and one escalation policy, with basic chat and limited email and push notifications.

Runframe may suit teams looking for a free plan with Slack incident response, a basic schedule, hosted status page, service catalog, and AI postmortem draft credits, capped at five users.

TaskCall is worth comparing if unlimited global SMS and voice notifications are a priority; its Starter plan is $9.00 USD per month.

GoAlert is a free, open-source, self-hosted alternative, but it requires a running PostgreSQL instance and has no free trial.

HeyOnCall offers a free trial for evaluation rather than a free plan.

Verdict

PagerTree is a strong choice for teams that want scheduling, escalation, alert management, and multiple responder channels under one service, with plans that scale from small teams to custom enterprise arrangements. Choose it when those controls and integrations suit your response process; look elsewhere if dependable SMS or voice coverage across specific countries, or uninterrupted usage beyond the notification threshold, is essential.
