Overview

The service extracts merchant, amounts, dates, taxes, line items, payment method, and categories, including from handwritten receipts. Duplicate detection can help keep recurring expense workflows tidy, while batch scanning makes it better suited to a stack of receipts than a single-image-only process.

Offline mode allows work to continue without connectivity and syncs after reconnection. Receipt Reader AI says financial data is encrypted with 256-bit AES, supports Face ID or Touch ID locks, and does not store banking credentials. It claims GDPR and SOC 2 compliance. Raw email is retained for 30 days before deletion, a point to weigh when forwarding sensitive receipts.

Key features

Capture and correction: Photo and PDF uploads, email forwarding, batch scanning, automatic detection, edge enhancement, and perspective correction provide several ways to submit and prepare receipts.
Structured extraction: Field coverage extends beyond totals and tax to line items, payment methods, dates, and categories; handwritten receipt support broadens the kinds of paperwork it can handle.
Exports and connections: PDF reports, CSV, IIF for QuickBooks Desktop, and a JSON API support different downstream workflows. Listed destinations include Xero, QuickBooks, Google Sheets, YNAB, Google Drive, and OneDrive.
Offline and device security: Offline work with later sync, biometric app locks, and encryption are useful for mobile expense capture, though forwarded raw email remains for 30 days.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per month (billed USD $0/mo) and includes 10 AI scans per month, one account, and PDF export. It is a sensible way to try a light personal workflow, but the low quota and single-account ceiling make it a poor fit for regular business receipt volume. A 14-day trial is also offered.

Personal costs 5.99 USD per month (billed USD $5.99/mo) for 50 scans monthly, PDF, CSV, and IIF export, plus Google Sheets, Drive, and YNAB. It suits an individual who needs basic structured exports and those destinations; its 50-scan cap leaves little room for heavier use.

Pro costs 14.99 USD per month (billed USD $14.99/mo) and raises the allowance to 200 scans, adds all export formats, Xero and QuickBooks, and email forwarding up to 50 receipts per month. This is the more practical tier for a freelancer or small operation that needs accounting connections, but it remains a single-account workflow.

Business costs 34.99 USD per month (billed USD $34.99/mo), with 10 accounts for multi-organization use, 1,000 scans monthly, all Pro features, API access, and forwarding for 500 emails per month. It is the clearest fit for teams integrating receipt data into their own systems. Enterprise costs 99.00 USD per month (billed USD $99/mo) for unlimited accounts, 5,000 scans, all integrations, API and webhooks, and 2,000 forwarded emails monthly; that higher ceiling suits larger workflows, though the scan allowance is still finite.

Platforms

Receipt Reader AI supports Android, iOS, web, and API access. Mobile capture and email forwarding suit receipts collected away from a desk, while API access is reserved for Business and above.

Who it's for

Individuals and freelancers can use the lower tiers to turn receipts into categorized, exportable expense data. Small businesses gain more from Pro's accounting connections, while teams that need multiple accounts or custom integrations should look at Business or Enterprise. It is less compelling for users with very low volume who can manage with manual entry, or for teams whose monthly receipt count exceeds the available plan quotas.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple capture routes, batch processing, handwritten receipt extraction, and detailed fields reduce the need to handle every receipt as a plain image.
Pro: Export choices range from PDF and CSV to IIF and API, with accounting and cloud destinations for different stacks.
Pro: Offline mode and stated encryption and biometric-lock support address practical mobile-use and device-access concerns.
Con: The free allowance is just 10 scans monthly, so recurring use quickly requires a paid plan.
Con: Account count, API availability, and email-forwarding quotas vary by tier, making team growth a plan-selection issue rather than a simple scan-volume upgrade.
Con: Raw forwarded email is retained for 30 days before deletion, which may not suit every organization's retention expectations.

Alternatives

For invoice-focused OCR with an API, consider Veryfi Invoices OCR API; its Starter plan has a $500/mo minimum commitment, so it is a substantially different buying proposition from a low-cost receipt tool. Choose Shoeboxed if its Starter tier's 30 digital scans monthly, paper-scan allowance, Magic Envelope, mileage, and single-user structure better match the workflow.

1tap receipts is another option for mobile receipt scanning. Bonro offers a free tier with five monthly receipts, on-device OCR, and no export, making it worth considering when on-device processing matters more than exporting data. Foreceipt is an alternative for receipt and expense-report workflows.

Receipt Pro, Smart Receipts, and Easy Expense are also alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Receipt Reader AI is a strong fit for individuals, freelancers, and small teams that need detailed receipt extraction across mobile, email, and document uploads, then want exports or accounting connections to carry that data into existing tools. Its broad capture and integration ladder are the reasons to choose it; the 10-scan free cap and increasingly plan-bound quotas and accounts are reasons to look elsewhere if volume or team structure is uncertain.
